Policies also don't get released until close to the election, otherwise the Governing party just says "yeh we will do that too" to anything that is popular with the electorate

You and I both know oppositions don't get elected because of policy. It's because the people think the government and its leaders are so unpalatable that they turn to someone else. The Federal ALP were dominating against Tony Abbott's coalition without any concrete policies or promises.
Great. So if they play their cards right they'll get elected because they're not the incumbents before going on to **** things up for another 3 years at which point the Libs get back in on the same premise and around and around and around it goes. Complete waste of time. I'm going to buy some acreage down Margaret River way and go off grid. They can have it.

Technically 4 years :p

Preacing to the converted, mate. Learnt a long time ago there's really not much difference between the two and I'm at least thankful it's not the Democrats vs Republicans here where politicians don't get popular because they want to build walls and f*** their own daughters.

I actually had 4 years but changed it. Shows how out of touch I've become about politics. It's catching up to football!

Re: McGowan - he went to the last election with Metronet, a fully costed, planned and viable public transport network. Centrepiece of the WA ALP. Convincingly defeated despite Barnett staggering along with half-arsed solutions (light rail to Mirrabooka that is now cancelled, for example), because they were stable, things were getting done and times were good. The boom is over and suddenly the Opposition is viable to the people. This is not a coincidence.
These days I usually just donkey vote now, they are as bad as each other.

Do you mean informal vote? A donkey vote is where you number 1-2-3-etc consecutively.

I typically go third party or independent, I figure we're still a great country, so I prefer to exercise my democratic rights and vote properly. 2PP though I tend to put ALP over Lib (like choosing the turd sandwich over the douchebag).

there is literally no point to invalid/informal/donkey voting, none at all
if you want to protest vote do it for an independent or at least try and vote the incumbent out of your seat

Yeah more informal in just voting for some random, writing nothing or drawing a silly picture on it or something..

Just do [1] Fyfe, Nathan at the bottom, maybe a joke somewhere in the corner, too. May as well give the scrutineers some relief from the tedium.

I once read somewhere that they get some really out there stuff written and/or drawn on them.

I think I voted for Des Headland last federal election, that was obviously a joke vote.

I voted for Wirrpanda. At the first election. Numbered all 64 or something.

At the re-run I couldn't be arsed doing all of them again. [1] Greens.

I just copped the $20 fine last time and didnt vote

So did I but that was because I refused to re-vote after they screwed up and lost the votes.

There is, whats the point in voting for an option if you think they are all crap?
Your non-vote has no impact, if anything it is a vote to keep the incumbent in as it's one less vote that could have ousted them.

And who says the main challenger would necessarily fit the voter better, or more accountable or representative?

Since we have compulsory voting here, a high informal vote total could be used as a barometer of voter dissatisfaction. If one informal vote has no impact on expressing dissatisfaction, then what impact does one formal vote have on effecting change?

Doesn't have to. It's all about making your seat marginal, otherwise neither party gives a shit about you as a voter. And the more marginal a party's lead is the more they need to gain the support of minor parties/opposition or appeal to other voters.

What message are you trying to send with an informal vote? There is no clear message.

People annoy me when they whine about developments in Perth.

Oh Perth is so boring there are no developments.

Bell tower gets built. No that's crap.
Convention centre. Yep , crap.
Perth stadium. Crap as well.
Betty's Jetty. What a waste of money. It's crap.

Seriously stfu. Go live in Manjimup if you don't want any change. I would hate to be a politician .

Maybe it's not the best looking building but it's very functional . I have been to heaps of things held there .

It's not very functional trying to get there and when you are looking to park somewhere near there and what I presume Wilsons are allowed to charge for parking is Obscene.

I don't mind the Bell tower - not the worse thing I've ever seen and although it cost a fortune I think the arena is great and the amount of whinging that went on about how that looks was ridiculous - I think it's a totally cool looking building

Bell Tower is rubbish too, should have been twice as tall. That was a classic example of the whingers failing to stop it but instead leaving us with a p.o.s

The message is there is no one worth voting for. The only reason people do it is because its compulsory.
That's great for when you talk to your mates but as far as affecting our political system it has no real message. The only way to show you aren't happy with things is to keep voting the incumbent out which sends a message that you aren't happy with them.

Non-compulsory voting is even worse because then the only people who can be bothered voting are politics nerds and the extremities of either side.

Australia would do a lot better without a 2 party system but how on earth do we get there?
