Jesus this city is shit. I've never been before, but after 24 hours here the city is poorly laid out, the people are possibly the least friendly in Australia, the airport sucks, and in my case the accommodation is something that I would be embarrassed to run.

Funny, I was just having my morning run along the river at East Freo thinking how awesome it is!

Agree the CBD is pretty average compared to other cities. The highlights of Perf is pretty much the river and beaches. Nice day so maybe get yourself somewhere along the beach/river for lunch and a few beers. Have you been to Freo yet? Plenty of places there to eat and drink, The Left Bank is great place for a laid back sat lunch and beers. Otherwise in Freo you've got Bather's Beach and Little Creatures. There should be a ferry that will take you from the CBD to Freo, nice scenic cruise.

And while most people dislike Canberra, it makes complete sense to me now that everyone I met from Perth who lived in Canberra liked it.

I've been to Canberra. Now there is a shithole that takes 5 minutes to see and I can confidently say I won't return there by choice.

Even Adelaide was better.

I've always had a good time in Adelaide, helps that I have a good mate there that has always taken me to decent places. Plus good wine regions close by, always a good town to visit.

Think Perth is a bit like that, would help having a someone local to show you around. The whole CBD/Northbridge area is a bit average but once you venture slightly further to Leederville/Mt Lawley,etc there are some better places.

You have to give Perth more than 24 hours. Do you have someone local showing you around?

Some cities like Melbourne are better suited for tourists, because they sell themselves as soon as you step off the plane. You can stay in a cheap Melbourne hotel in the CBD for a few days and have a great time. Perth, on the other hand, does have a shitty airport and there's not many decent hotels around other than Crown.

In terms of lifestyle, however, I've lived all over the world (in London the past few years) and from my experience Perth is up there with the best cities. The weather, food, outdoor activities, nightlife (yes I went there), cleanliness, career and schooling options are all fantastic. The problem is, at first, it's unclear where to find it all, which is why you need a local to show you around.

Perth can feel like a ghost town, but that's because everything is spread out, so much so that it has one of the lowest population densities for a large city in the world. There are plenty of people around, but you just need to know where to find them. After spending hours each weekend bumping into people at Waitrose, it's actually something I quite miss. People are friendly but like most Australian cities it's quite insular.

You should tell us what you want to do here, and I'm sure we can point you in the right direction.
