boom/bust economy life

The mining boom was always going to end sooner rather than later.

What is incredibly stupid to me was the lack of planning from our State Government based on that inevitability.

In terms of budgeting for falls in revenues sure, but why is it always up to the govt to plan for boom/bust cycles? Can't individuals show a bit of foresight?

So this is currently on the front page of reddit (yes I know, lolreddit), rare for something from Perth:

Called a 'halal snack pack' or HSP for short - meat, three kinds of sauces, all on top of chips - am I the only one that has never had one?
That looks amazing.

I do have a lot to say for those FIFOs and associated workers that lived well beyond their means, are now copping it for short sighted spending decisions, and choose to blame the government entirely, however the WA State government does share a bit of blame for planning as if the good times would never end and didn't save up for a rainy day during the boom.

I'm in recruitment. Advertised for a switchboard electrician this morning

35 calls and count less resumes once the ad went live. 45 mins later....it's absolutely scary out there at the moment
haha I applied for that one... ****, that's not good to know.

this is why I'm not even getting a call about jobs... SO MANY sparkies out of work.

the boom really is over.. I need to find a new skill :(

Why not just work for yourself. Should be plenty of odd jobs out there for an electrician. I'm a mechanic and I registered my own business. There's always people wanting something done.

Most of the spending by the state government was actually in Infrastructure which was a good thing. It could have been far worse if they just spent it all on giving us free money essentially.

I thought it was more like 5k or something ridiculous. Do you know anyone that's done the course it and how hard it is?

That's more temporary though. Once its built, where do the labourers go? How many jobs is Elizabeth Quay generating at the moment? There isn't exactly a huge demand for new apartments and office space either created by the quay.

There were better ways to invest the riches.

Actually infrastructure is a very good way to invest riches. They just did it at the wrong time. If they'd started building these things now, they would've been cheaper, and they would've been employing people who are now unemployed, waiting for the next boom.

Timing was more of a factor with Barnett IMO.

Looks like you can get it done for $2250. I was just having a look as I was curious to how much electricians have to do to get licensed.

My opinion is if you're a tradie its worth spending the money to get licensed as if anything happens with work you can always fall back on working for yourself. There is always going to be work around.

This is how I think it would be best, but there are election campaigns in the middle which look at two years away and hold out their hand for all those billions flowing in.

We end up paying millionaire tax on people getting comfortable, then getting punished by the same electorate when the golden tit stops dripping milk.

Yes, there's no doubt that the election situation was why the Liberals brought infrastructure projects forward. It was a silly decision, as they would've won anyway, and they made their situation worse by lengthening their first term due to bringing in fixed four year terms.

Their first duty is to extending their job. Always.

Also, you can set up your own business later down the track and be one of those fat cats that use a family trust to distribute their income :P
