I find a lot of neighbourhoods these days aren't as friendly as they used to be. I used to know almost every house around me when I was younger but these days people keep to themselves.

It doesn't help that there are a lot of campaigners these days.

I just find it sad that people feel this way these days. That we can't all be friendly and we are immediately stereotyping people based on their looks instead of giving them a chance first.

You can tell a lot from how people look though. I always judge people on appearances, I can't help it.

Categorising people and things is a very normal way that we make sense of the world around us.

In general from my experiences living in Sydney Perth people are notably cliquey and conservative. It was a lot easier friending people in Sydney and that's saying something given you can still come across some stuck ups in Sydney.

These days? Pretty normal to find 'campaigners' around. I bet one or two people think you're one, too, crazily enough

It's not just "A" pool, KS- from what I heard (and this was a couple of years ago), it was a 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool PLUS hydro pools, etc. Not sure what the $26 mill covers as I haven't read the costings sheet - perhaps it's the whole aquatic complex.

Makes me want to start my rant about all these new suburbs and their little parks with the obligatory lake- no safety fence required.....

What an amazing response by the WA community and neighbours of this little boy, Sam.

People in houses nearby left food and water out for him, as it was said that he might not respond to them calling his name (he was autistic). Others sang his favourite song, in an attempt to draw him out, in case he was hiding. Hundreds of people joined in the search throughout the evening and night.

Makes me so proud to be part of this Perth community!

How exactly did the child "escape"? I want to say it's hard to believe that a toddler could get so far on his own unless it took a lengthy time before the parents noticed he was missing but I remember running off at a similar age too

Apparently he was pretty quick out the door (he is 2 y.o.) and the mum/parent said that tradesmen working at the house must've left the door open.

Bloody hard for the tradies, if that's the case.

Agree with you- if everyone seemed to 'know him', you'd think someone driving or walking around the area would've spotted a 2 y.o. wandering around the 800+metres that he walked in order to reach the lake- supposing he actually walked the entire distance directly and didn't meander there via other routes.

*I'm* suspicious- but that's just me. I'm ALWAYS suspicious at first.
No fingers pointed at this stage, from what I've read, though. Apart from the tradies being blamed, of course.

Mum was within earshot of him - told him to close the fridge he had left open and it was beeping. Beeped again so she called out and then went to look because she heard no response. Saw that the front door was ajar and ran outside - apparently he couldn't open the door himself but there had been some traders there earlier installing something and may not have closed the door properly walking in and out all the time. No idea how he got out of sight so quick though

Yeah, ta, KS. I hadn't heard that info- was just going on the stuff I'd heard and read. I withdraw my "suspicions".

We've had some trouble with some neighbours over the past 12 months and it has skewed my view a little bit. In our old house we got along well with everyone around us but the ones across the road from us are stuck up arse holes who think they own the street.

Yeah when you are going in and out grabbing stuff with your mind on a completing a job would be very easy to do.

When my nephew was very little we didn't realise he could even reach the front door handle, wondered where the heck he was one day and he was about 200m down the road, all happened in a flash..

They don't come with safety fences, and I hope they never do.
