Albany was originally going to be WA's capital city, it's the oldest European settlement in WA, but then Perth took over due to the Swan River/Freo harbour area being considered more desirable.

It could have been WA's version of Melbourne with shit beaches, cold rainy weather, a heap of hipster cafes/pubs and Silent Alarm would probably still live there.

Still think Albany is a good place for another WA city, it has a great harbour with the King George Sound, magnificent tourist attractions like Dog Rock and the Whaling Museum. Don't think it will ever take off though, last time I was there they didn't even have traffic lights, it was all roundabouts.

Dog Rock>>>>>Wave Rock

Better than Ayres Rock too, Perth has nothing to compare to it.

And Albs has shit beaches? You've gotta be kidding me. Try saying that down the Whitey

Yeah I was being a bit harsh on Albany's beaches, Middleton isn't too bad either, not the best by WA standards but not as bad as Melbourne.

We discussed this in a thread last year and Albany was the most popular place

What a hero. Tries to kill the snake and then refuses medical aid after being bitten, hopefully it got away. Isn't it something like 90% of snake attacks are due to people actively trying to catch/kill them in the first place?

I know we were having a laff but it might be a bit unfair. From the scrap of the report it seemed like the bloke that died was actually intervening in between someone trying to kill the snake, tried to pick it up to shoo it away and got done himself. Might actually be a hero.

The piece accompanied a TV spot on ABC where at the end the lady asks what West Australians can do to protect their house from snakes. The answer? Clean debris from around your house...Fire? Clean debris. Flood? Clean debris. Snake? Clean debris. Climate change. Clean debris. If there was an Ebola outbreak in Australia I'm positive there'd be a very stern faced Firey on the TV telling everyone to clean debris to avoid the Ebola.

They just put some traffic lights in at the big roundabout for the ANZAC Commemerative weekend. Expecting up to 50k of visitors, should be interesting....

Yep. Always liked Albany. Haven't been there this century though

Yeah I haven't been there since the 90s either, they might have put up some traffic lights since then.

Love the history, scenery, even the cold weather, great place.

Not far to drive to Denmark, Walpole or up to the Stirling Ranges or the Porongarups, better location than Perth imo but it's nice that it's less spoilt by urban city sprawl.

Oh wow, I hadn't heard about this. Just had a read on the net about it - not even real lights. Baby steps lol

I have to say though, for a town full of roundabouts, Albany drivers are ****ing terrible at using them.

Even that is downplaying it. Places like Two Peoples, Cheynes, and some up near Denmark are amazing. On tier with anywhere else in the world. Mids is also a pretty great beach, white sand, long, never packed, rarely choppy in summer and great for swimming – rare for a main beach. Perth obviously has some nice ones but there's always something less tranquil and spoilt about them. That and the granite and rips

It's still the same

Yeah I remember going to Two Peoples and Cheynes, they're nice beaches too.

Also remember going to The Gap and the Natural Bridge where you probably don't want to have a swim or a surf unless you want to get smashed on rocks.

It's a more interesting coastline down there, Perth has some great beaches but it's basically one big straight beach with very little variety.
