Have just finished this thread :drunk:

I know Perth has a few detractors and I hated it for the first couple of years I lived there after spending my childhood and teenage years in the bush (and constantly traveling to sydney to to see my Brother, what a city!), but have grown to like the place. Going to be a great city hopefully once city link and Elizabeth quay are done. I maintain that Perth is a good place to live, so that you can Holiday elsewhere.

Manning Rd can get ****ed though, absolute abortion of a road

Stirling Hwy was designed for a simpler time when people rode trams to work, ladies swooned instead of twerked and Sunday meant going to church.

Perth is good, I like it here. I used to complain that it was too small but in the past few years it has grown substantially and with it the culture has matured and diversified. Many drinking options and it seems every week there's a new microbar. Many many more eating options other than crappy Chinese at Old Shanghai and Macca's.

Walking through Northbridge this evening and seeing so many things going on - Fringe Festival, Rooftop Movies, something at the Piazza etc - tells me that we've become a world city. Good. In 20 years it may be too busy and dirty and overcrowded but for now it's perfect. I don't want to move for a while.

Well said.

And I cannot believe that Old Shanghai is still open.

I get that it offers cheap(ish) food and there's a place for that, you can't have nothing but upmarket restaurants, but when you're in Northbridge there are so many other options offering better food at around the same price or a tiny bit more, both in Northbridge and the city (which will be fully connected soon enough, that's one thing that Colin Barnett's government is doing that I am in full support of).

At the risk of being labeled a hipster (I'm not), the coffee scene has improved ten-fold over the past few years.

Many decent spots opening up around the place
Definitely. Coffee places everywhere, breakfast/brunch places (eg Vic Park), microbars (so many in the city), high-end stuff (especially Crown), fast food franchises (you don't have to settle for burgers and fries now if you want quick and cheap food) - the variety has increased exponentially and I love it.

Was back in Perth over christmas for holidays. I lived there for the first 25 years of my life and I love it, but can't see myself moving back there for a while. It's nothing to do with the city itself, more the mindset of its denizens, and the issue isn't so much with them but with me.

My perception of most of the people of Perth is that they're very happy with their lifestyle, and the benefits Perth offers, but that their interests don't really extend much past the far eastern suburbs of the city. Which is fine, and I can respect that. But for someone who has spent the last year living and working in Canberra, you try talking about federal issues and people's eyes almost glaze over. I feel like I could happily move back there in 20 years once I've done all the things I want to do, but it's just not the place for me right now.

That said Scarborough seems like a completely different place from a year ago, also what kind of fools decided that a pool at Scarborough beach would be a good idea? It seems like the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. Why ruin a pristine beach with a pool?

It probably is - I just like to blame Barnett for things :)
The Lib/Nat government has done a pretty good job overall. It's very easy to criticise our political leaders - especially when the sense of them being a new government is gone.

But one thing that gets my goat is the council amalgamations. I am still amazed that there seems to be so little concern about the City of Canning disappearing, and the circumstances that have surrounded it.

How convenient for Coles too - they have taken this opportunity to put forward their request to turn the High Road Tavern into a Coles. No community consultation, but it's already got approval. No mayor for two years, the man who replaced the mayor sacked because he disagreed with the City being swallowed up...

Not a massive fan of Barnett but at least the stadium is going imo in the right spot right away from suburban Subiaco. Extra wait time sucks though.

Why would people in Perth take any interest in what's happening in Canberra when, as far as they can tell, Canberra has no interest in Perth?

Not the best pub around, but sad to see shit like this happening. One less useful entertainment venue gone for short sighted $$$. The joys of Coles and Woolies owning all the pubs.

Sup. I had a quintessential Perth night – I peaked at pres, I shamed myself on a train, and I had to put up with a $46 taxi ride.

Anyway, I got a fine last night for getting off at Perth station without a ticket.

The address I gave them was a fake one and the guy got my information off my proof of age card. So there's no tie to any actual residence and no ability for them to trace me via a driver's licence. I don't live here anymore either so I'm not on the electoral role or anything... it's akin to getting a fine in Queensland.

How do you get out of the fine? Can I just not pay? It's my first offence so will a letter be enough?
