Plenty of business, let alone tourist investment in the city.

That remains to be seen - I hope that's what actually happens and that it is an area for all not just a few.
Hopefully they spend as much money fixing the river system so that the waterways around it continue to be utilised as a water playground

EQ is cost neutral or close to it for the Govt as the revenue made from the development sites will pay for the infrastructure / public realm works

Really - where did you get that info from

Apologies, hunting around to confirm my recollections it seems the net cost to Govt is around $300m out of the total $2.6 billion project
They could build 1000 hospitals for that. #PerthNowComments

Presumably the City of Stirling aren't interested in spending their money on Stock Road between Fremantle and Rockingam?

I'm pretty sure the city of sterling aint paying for all of that out of their own coffers.

Living in port Kennedy I don't get up to Scarborough much. But just before Xmas I did a job there and arrived at 6am to beat the horrific Kwinana fwy shit fight. Walked around for an hour before my job and was pretty impressed with the surroundings.

To spend that much dough on boardwalks and more cafes is ridiculous imo.

The mayor says " it will be the best beach in WA". So $$$$ing what! Only locals and a few sprinkle of tourists will use it.

Meanwhile it takes 80 mins to travel 25 kms in peak hour from South st to Ennis ave rocko...through 10 sets of God damn lights.

But more cafes at scar ouch are a priority. It's a joke.

As with everything in Perth it seems to be cyclic - at one stage it did have a lot going for it but rather than keep refreshing it and allowing development they let it become run down and a trouble spot and now here we are having to shell out big bucks to bring it back. It will be interesting to see how they address the unsavoury element that frequents the area being the only accessible beach via easily accessible public transport

Yeah, this is great for Scabs. Scabs would be the worst of the major beaches in that there's a real disconnect from surrounding entertainment options and family areas.

Additionally, WA's beaches are one of its most important tourism assets. We should be making the most of it.

+1 for Scarborough is shit.

There really is bugger all in the area. Not that there is anything much at Cottesloe, City Beach etc. but the whole strip just seems a bit barren.

I grew up in Melbourne. So any beach to me is great. But in my 20s I lived on the Gold Coast in Burliegh Heads- which has one of the best foreshores in the country with its 2kms of wide open parkland and giant trees.

To me, perths northern beach spots are treeless, soulless places. But in their own unique way they are nice places to spend time if you just accept it as a wa beach.

After 10 odd years here, I have stopped comparing everything to the GC and enjoy what's on offer.

One of the nicest foreshore in Perth is the Safety Bay- Shoalwater coastline. No waves to surf and there's seaweed galore- but you get 5kms of tranquility. No cafes or high rise apartments or pubs. It doesn't need it cause it's fine the way it is.

Isn't there gang violence around Scarborough? Or am I thinking of somewhere else?

That's a myth. People from overseas or over east don't fly to Perth especially for the beaches.

Scarborough is a favoured hangout for dickheads, but 'gang violence' is probably a bit News Ltd.

None of the beaches in Perth are developed to the extend of the East coast. Plenty (generally those that live there and looooove making money off property development anywhere else) will argue this is a good thing, but it would be nice to have at least one area which was a bit more tourist friendly. Cottesloe is picture perfect at the right time of day but really it's got a couple of cafes, two pubs and a fish'n'chip shop. We could do a lot more.

I don't remember Scarborough ever being interesting. The highlight was probably The Lookout, and that's a pretty low highlight.

I'm old though - Sunday sessions down at Scarborough used to be great and there were quite a few restaurants and the area was always really vibrant and busy. You could see what bond had in mind for Scarborough but as usual red tape and bureaucracy got in the way. The beach itself is one of the more dangerous ones along that strip so again it's interesting that this is where all the focus is and also explains the pool. Personally I'm a fan of floreat/city beach

Has anyone from the East ever flown to Perth for a week and actually spent all of it in Perth?

Exactly. All my friends and family back east are more interested in the Margret River wine area and down south. When talking about Perth it self, all they want to see is the Freo cafe and pub district.

No one ever raves about the Perth beaches. And when they do mention it, it's always brought up how freakin hot it is and how there's bugger all shade and how one can be reduced to the colour of a crayfish in under 60 mins.

You must be old (;)), I don't remember there being lots of restaurants or the area being vibrant. It's got a bit of a shopping mall feel to it for mine. You drive there, you do whatever it is you went to do (swim, surf, eat McDonalds - not any more, punch brown skinned folk, whatever) then you drive home. It's not like you would really just find yourself there with the beach as a nice backdrop.

I watched the youtube video, definitely looks like an improvement. The pool looks to be set back a bit from the ocean. Is it just going to be a standard pool rather than filled by seawater?

Chlorinated pool - salt water apparently not feasible

While I'm not happy with the cost, I am glad to see it get a revamp. It will be nice to be able to return to the area without All the riff raff - it's an area with so much potential and I hope it proves to be successful the same way Hilary's is

Elizabeth Quay is what Richard Court should have built rather than chickening out and aiming small with the Bell Tower

The Bell Tower still could've been great if it was about double the size.

Now it's just a nice building that's easy to miss.
