Don't worry- there are loads of long words that I also need to check....

Sometimes it's better to use lots of small words which convey the same meaning.
Often I know what a lot of these words mean from just reading, but don't know how to pronounce them because hardly anyone ever actually uses them in general conversation..

I know the meaning of these words but using them doesn't come naturally to me (I think they're better off being restricted to crosswords!). I hate it when people write as if they've swallowed a thesaurus. My eyes glaze over and I can't take anything in.... so I don't bother reading it unless I have to.

I more get annoyed by people not writing concisely, like taking 3 pages to explain something that could easily be summed up simply in 1.. Academics a really bad for this :)

I can see how you so easily dispose of two-thirds of the text.

Was at the puppets today.
We had a fairly poor vantage point but the brief period of time that the Giants were close to us was impressive. It's quite mesmerizing really.

Was also funny seeing the disorganisation as the event crew and police tried to clear a path down riverside drive for the marching band. I thought the horses were gonna go crazy.
I went along too. Accidentally found a spot just in front of the cranes they used to put them on the barge. Was decent to see but not something I'd rush along to again although that was probably more due to battling with the mass of humanity that went along. They were quite impressive for two giant blocks of wood

Was certainly chaotic and not particularly well organised - really don't think they expected as many people to turn up. Had to laugh at dimwits with pushbikes getting frustrated at their inability to negotiate their bikes through a mass of people - hard to understand what they expected and how they thought people standing shoulder to shoulder were going to be able to make room for them to pass through

The Giants were mental and seeing the look of wtf on people's faces was well worth the efforts. Remember that they didn't have a dry run/rehearsal at doing this so a lot of it was off the cuff.

Anyone who bitches out the cost of it or whatever other moan are probably the same people 40 pages ago on this thread complaining Perth is dullsville. Well done.

So ah, ambos, fire truck and police at what looked to be a crash on North Lake Road heading soith just after the Kardinya shops. Anyone know what happened? Didn't have mich of a vantage point on my way past but it looked like something had run off the road and through someone's backyard perhaps?

Very poorly organised. A lot of pushing and shoving and anger where I was, the event staff didn't seem to appreciate the difficulty of moving thousands of people off the road when we had nowhere to move to.

Was funny seeing Barnett getting boo'd though. Also how drunk was he?

Into someone's house and no one injured from what I've heard.

I moved here

I have no idea of the numbers that will see the puppets but from the news reports a lot of people have gone into the city to see them although I'll agree that 500k seems a stretch. But even if its 200k then the governments contribution of $3m is still pretty good value for money - they've spent a lot more in the past for worse results so viewed in isolation I think this has been money well spent.

If you want to frame the spending in a wider context of a history of money being spent in Perth and not in the regions then there is no doubt that problem still exists despite royalties for regions and theres any number of projects in Perth that illustrate that point well. What you should be taking from this is that money can be spent wisely on something that will succeed which only serves to highlight to wasteful spending that occurs elsewhere
It would have been good if somebody with enough vision to see beyond the Darling Scarp could have been involved. That giant diver would have been quite an appropriate sight walking down the streets of Broome and maybe the girl at Mandurah or Bunbury after they had both paid a visit to Perth.

Still, the CBD had a boost, which is great for PCC ratepayers. I wonder how businesses in other suburbs fared on the weekend.

Without knowing the logistics of moving these things around I'd agree that the sight of that diver walking along cable beach would be something unique. It would have been quite a boon too for a town that is seriously struggling at the moment

Its because they have to be objective

Would the crowds in Broome have justified the cost of bringing them into town though?

No way. $5 million dollars, would have been lucky to get a few thousand people there, as opposed to 600,000 people here.

I was in rotto all weekend and missed the giants. Have heard good things, but Im struggling to get my head around and relate to the public fascination of it all, and the massive lines and mayhem trying to get there and home. It was only two massive puppets being carted around by a crane...I just dont get it. Guess I had to be there.

Glad to hear the kids out there enjoyed it.

You can be objective and conscise.

When writing journals and research papers there is a way of doing things, you have to be really careful - citing references, not using subjective language.

Yes, but some academics forget they need to be readable as well.
