The karrinyup road on ramp meeting with the cedric street off ramp followed up by the on lane finishing almost as soon as you get on to the freeway - just crazy shit.
Similar set up to the manning road exit - don't know which engineer thought those would work well
as soon as you said Karrinyup road i thought of the Manning rd/canning hwy exit, hate that one when its busy

There's a wide variety of reasons so it depends on the individual; some have had bad experiences with pedestrians either abusing them for ringing the bell or doing something erratic after hearing the bell and causing an incident.
My rule of thumb is that I will ring the bell as a courtesy if its going to be a tight squeeze, or the peds are being erratic, but if I'm passing 1m+ away on a wide path or at very low speed I won't bother as the bell potentially causes more issues than it solves.
It is irritating when you get passed close by a faster cyclist with no warning too, as bikes don't have rear view mirrors.

Totally agree on ringing the bell being more trouble than it's worth half the time. For some reason women just panic and start ****ing running in circles like it's the end of the world, holy shit lady, just take a single ****ing step to the side. Then you get the ones that cross to the other side of the path that nearly clothes line you with their dog+leash...

And yeah, despite enjoying the odd ride myself, cyclists are ********s.

As long as they are obeying the road rules, there's no reason why they shouldn't be using whatever road or path they want,

Not really. Riding on roads increases the risk of accidents. That alone is reason enough.

Just because cyclists are comfortable facing the extra dangers doesn't mean drivers should have to accept the resulting increased risk that they're going to hit a cyclist.

And as a casualy cyclist, let's be honest, the quality of the paths has nothing to do with it, it's not like they're riding the ****ing Dauphine. It's entirely about how ****ing irritating it is to slow down for pedestrians or all the other little nit piketty things like intersection footpaths etc.

The only reason drivers are at an increased risk of hitting a cyclist is because they cant ****ing drive, its really one of the most minor risks that a driver faces on every single trip and one which is pretty much entirely controllable by the driver. A cyclist isnt going to clean up a car and kill the driver like another car or a truck will.

I battle that one every day going to work. People going 90km/h+ trying to get in the left hand lane off the freeway (me), people going 90km/h+ trying to get in the right hand lane on to the freeway.

Reminds me of the chicanes on my old Scalectric set.

Spoken like a true cyclist.

No, but they are more than capable of getting themselves killed, leaving other people to deal with the consequences.

My Mum's cousin was killed cycling along the footpath after colliding with a car reversing out of its driveway. It's called a footpath for a reason, and it's actually illegal for bicycles to be there, so bikes must go on the road in many cases.

The attitude that is wrong is that of angry arrogant motorists who think they own the road.

So much this. Back when I lived in Bedford riding just before I got home went up onto the footpath to turn in and very nearly got cleaned up by a neighbours car pulling out. At the same place backing my car almost did the opposite in cleaning up a bloke flying past on a bike on the path. I'm sure both of us were looking as we were backing out but with shrubs near the end of a lot of driveways in the street it was just impossible to see each other. The footpath is often be the most dangerous place for kids or adults to ride.

I don't know how old the person was that was killed but its actually legal for children under 12 I believe to ride on the footpath. Unfortunately accidents are going to happen - no doubt there have been pedestrians struck and killed by reversing cars.

I think it's just a vicious cycle now in that there are just as many angry, arrogant bike riders and both are determined to show who "owns" the road but unfortunately it's always going to be the bike rider who comes off second best

Yep, you've got to really concentrate in certain places. I always check driveways etc if I'm on a footpath and never go too fast.

We need more people cycling, not less. So the shit attitude of motorists needs to change and there needs to be more infrastructure for bikes.

Ok, I didn't realise that. It was a long time ago, but he was over 12. I don't know what the laws were back then.

Tbh I think most of the angst appears to be "professional" riders rather than your everyday Joe pedalling home. Seems attitude adjustments are required all round

Really? Really?

Slight exaggeration but yes the increased risk from cyclists riding on the road comes mostly from drivers not being able to or refusing to drive properly. The minority comes from cyclists doing dumb shit which gets themselves hurt - instant karma.

There are footpaths and there are shared paths.

IMO you aren't a lot safer on a bike riding along the cycle lane to the left of a road than you are riding on the footpath 1 metre to the left of that when it comes to cars backing out of driveways, but yes riding on footpaths is still illegal and should be.

That's bad but at least it's not on the level of Fantails which have had the exact same 3-4 questions for about 15 years.
