It wouldn't be that bad. From memory in Duncraig it took me about 20 minutes to get into East Perth for a 7am start.

What decade was that
Takes me 20 minutes to get to northbridge and I travel less than 5km's

2008. What time do you start, leaving at 6.30am it definitely never took more than 25 minutes max.

9.00am and I literally go .5km down scabs, into Charles, Vincent and then Bulwer
If I risk it and leave home at 8.50 and there has been no accident somewhere else then I'm sitting at my desk with about a minute to spare - it's being prepared to run the risk.
I think that a lot more people are starting to give the freeway the miss and are using wanneroo road hence the congestion these days

lol no wonder at that time. Leaving early in the morning it was chokers but the traffic would seem to still flow at at least around 50-70km.

The wife and I are moving to Perth in about 2 months. We have done considerable research on housing and public transport recently, but could always do with other perspectives on the positives and negatives of this city. Our main question is which suburbs would you recommend moving into, where there is a maximum 20 minute public transport ride into the CBD, minimal noise and low crime rate? We have been looking at Tuart Hill, Manning, Bateman, Mount Lawley, Watermans Bay, Booragoon and Maylands. We'll be renting for the first 6 months to a year before we decide on where to buy. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Salter Point (right next to Manning) and love it here! if moving to Manning do your research - there's good and bad parts to it. I love the central location and being only one train station from the CBD (they do need to improve parking for this, but never had a problem getting parking on the Como side)

Reading this story made was sad. I've driven through there so many times and it's nothing but paddocks. The farmer that was burning off must feel like shit too.
Gees, that is shit. I can't imagine how the woman would feel, seeing that happen :(
You'd probably want to try and drive your car (if possible) off the road ASAP to look at it, though. There've been a few people killed over recent years, by passing cars whose drivers are rubbernecking elsewhere after a minor incident. They just should not happen!

Why are we having so many smoke-related incidents recently? What has changed?
The freeway has a lot of signage up regarding fog (which I assume they are leaving up atm to encompass smoke problems as well).

Sounds like A few people could be in a bit of strife

Cannot begin to imagine the nightmare that has engulfed this family - lost one child and two others fighting for their lives.
absolutely tragic. Yeah, I can't imagine having something like that happen to my kids- the poor parents. This sort of thing often results in family break-ups, as one parent or the other blames their partner for going to the event, plus the stress of having the other kids in hospital, possibly for the long term..

It's unbelievable to think that the barriers were dodgy- incredible that someone would risk being so negligent!

This smoke is starting to shit me.
Damned if they do, damned if they don't, aren't they?
The problem seems to lie in the lack of wind to move the smoke out. It's just hanging around.
If I apply for a permit to burn the bush around here, i.e. a bonfire, there are strict regulations governing what I can and can't do. One of the restrictions is that I can't burn off if the wind is >19kph. Today, at times, the wind has dropped to under 10kpm- even less in Perth.

The trees are at a stand still here. Not even the tops are moving.
we got a bit of a breeze here around 4.30 pm and the smoke disappeared very quickly. :) just a little puff that blew my washing around slightly but it was gone very quickly, though.
The big problem is that the wind has been dying down at about this time of night, then not moving until about 8am..
Guess we can expect more smoke in the morning...

Travel safely, everyone!

CALM were burning out at Roleystone on the weekend and Serpentine yesterday. Guess it is better than the alternative- ie high fuel load and raging bushfires out of control...
That explains all the smoke around the area I'm in then.
