Give it six months and people will be asking why we don't have daylight saving so it can be dark in the mornings in summer too!
Funny you should say that....
I was having a discussion about DS with someone who just didn't "get it" and she was saying that she thought it would be a good idea if we could have daylight savings so we could use the extra hour of sunlight in winter because the mornings were always too dark. I'm like :confused: wtf are you on about?? :drunk:

She didn't want to have DS in summer because it upset the biorhythms of her animals or something equally ridiculous.
I think that's when I might have changed the subject.. ;)

The culture needs to change but it's not going to happen.

Build up or build out - our culture is still centered around an ever increasing population which is something it seems we will never get right.

Perth would be a better city if it was 1 million people instead of rapidly closing in on 2 million. It would also be a better city if those 1 million weren't as spread out. I live relatively close to the city in Perth terms (just outside Transperth zone 1) and I actually welcome higher density around me. I live close enough to a train station that I can walk there in 5 minutes and the zoning is R20. Riduclous. I'm in the minority, though.

Every ring we develop further from the city makes the city worse. The suburbs and houses are fine, but the city is so centralised that they just put more and more strain on infrastructure that isn't designed for 2m people. The people moving in to the new rings don't care because they can't afford to move anywhere else, and the people already living closer in (a) complain about the increased strain on traffic etc. and (b) are the ones who invest in these areas in the first place to 'generate their wealth'! It's an endless cycle...

I'll take the tissues for this runny nose that this bullshit weather is from, wouldn't be bad if I worked inside but that wind chill this morning was stiff nipples hard
Yeah- it was cold the other morning as well. 2 degrees out here. Probably 4/5 deg this morning.
I was out at 2am and 4am this morning in my pjs and boots, checking my chickens. (Yes, it was pretty cold then. Took my feet forever to warm back up!) There's a fox still in the neighbourhood and the dogs all around were going absolutely mental, barking. I heard someone lose a few chooks. It's really sad- they scream when the fox gets hold of them. Worse than a horror movie scream, I reckon.

It's not even that cold you pansies.

Walking home from the bus stop tonight about 9:30 it was bloody freezing. I was also walking into a pretty strong breeze which didn't help matters.

I was born and grew up in the Perth. Brrrrr winters.

Then I flew off to college in the mid-west USA.

Showed my Perth winter coat to fellow student. Was told " you are going to die" and was taken shopping for real winter cloths.

When it was -30 and windchill -50, even those proper winter cloths needed other proper winter cloths over the top to approach not freezing to death.

Coming back to Oz realize that we do not dress properly for even the level of cold weather we have here.

I have a jacket/coat type thing I wear in winter here over the top of business clothes.

Wore it in Japan. As useful as a cat flap in an elephant house. Out in the snow for hours at a time I never had many problems as I have thermals, ski pants etc. but out at night just walking 5 minutes from the house to dinner it's amazing how little protection Perth winter clothes give you from the cold.

Coldest temperature I've experienced is about minus 10 with strong, icy winds on top of that. Talk of -30 and -50 with windchill does not process in my brain. May as well just call it -273.15 and be done with it.

What's with these bullshit petrol prices? I'm not one to worry about saving a dollar or two but when you're driving a big 4wd and a turbo that only runs on premium it definitely makes a difference.

And on the weather, yeah technically it's not that cold here but for those of us that aren't used to temperatures dropping below 0 anything under 10 degrees is freezing

That's an insult to pansies, because they tolerate cold weather really well.

I haven't even worn a long sleeve shirt yet, and I'm inland.
