went to perth for the first time 2 weeks ago and i liked it, plenty to do away from the city but i did find city life a bit bare compared to brisbane.

15 years ago our nightlife was mainly in Subi and Northbridge.

The discussions re the relocation of the oval ceased investment and that area has now been overtaken by Mt Lawley with Vitoria Park quickly picking up pace.

Our rowdier nightlife was in northbridge but the bikies gang owned night clubs came under review after blowing up a police officer, the aboriginal kid issue (13-17yos) gangs became an issue and the constant one punch attacks forced change. the city of perth responded by a concerted effort along with the state government to change the atmosphere back to family friendly with more restaurants, small bars and community areas.

our best little gems are hidden (as is the trend elsewhere) with underground bourbon bars on king street, the scotch bar andalus down the lane, helvetica a cool little tapas bar, roof top bars, pop up bars. One of our funkier bars is a hidden jazz bar in leederville which has a phone box as a hidden entrance.

sure it is no melbourne but the women here are gorgeous and very accommodating. but it is best enjoyed by living here rather than holidaying.

High 40's is bad enough but high 40's and having to wear boots, trousers and long sleeves that can't be rolled up is a waking nightmare.

that would be nuts. I would last 10 minutes and then my whinging would be unbearable.

Didn't know about any of those places.

Jazz bar sounds interesting. What's it called?

Just had to think of the money.. think of the money.

I always thought it would be better underground but they have to wear even more shit (cap lamp, battery pack, gumboots, tracker, self rescuer) and due to the ventilation there is a constant warm wind blowing. Was actually more comfortable on the surface just because you could move easier.

That jazz bar entrance is some Harry Potter shit.

I remember being in Coober Pedy etc in my singlet and shorts and being shocked at seeing the locals wearing jeans, flannos and boots.
My son reckons the only time the guys rolled up their sleeves up North was when it was so humid that wearing long sleeves only made things worse.

Lol

I was lucky to have worked underground back in the days before the OH&S blokes had started breeding. Singlets, shorts, gumboots, hard hat, caplamp and that was about it. Thank goodness I got out of the industry when I did.
One OH&S bloke came to inspect our office one day and was concerned with which way the toilet door opened...FFS! And how much clearance the exiting person had if someone was standing at the table nearby.

Even on the CBH they now have to wear long sleeved shirts and trousers.

One thing I HATE is having to tuck your shirt in to your pants. Was so pissed at the nickel smelter when the muppet we had as leading hand would always wear shabby old work clothes with holes in them, and was lazy with stuff like signing in to diferrent areas. Then we get in trouble from higher up and our boss of course then goes super strict with everything, people like me that previously were neat and followed the main rules have to tuck their shirt in now and wear proper safety glasses instead of regular sunnies even if you are walking to the lunch room about 500m in the open away from anything

Hahaha! Tucked in shirts? Guess it's to stop the loose shirts flopping into anything.

I had holes in the back of my shirt and pants, too, from acid leaking out of my battery but was too stingy to buy more. Got a comment or two from WMC's Roy Woodall (was a director at the time) to my boss who just laughed it off. Seeing as the company didn't buy my clothes, I decided I wasn't going to get new King Gees/Stubbies every time I got a hole in them. Plus I was a bit of a rebel back in those days. :P

Which smelter are/were you at? Kalgoorlie/Kambalda. I guess there are lots more around these days- I don't keep up with that stuff anymore.

Oh and I think it was Scotland on another thread that brought it up, but the people that get employed as OH&S reps are somehow the biggest losers that they can manage to find..
I'm sure there are some who believe in what they do but others just want to bully people so nitpick on all the little unimportant things because they hold a bit of power in that things don't happen unless they sign off.

They're the ones who need to be taken out the back and taught a couple of things about efficiency and production.

I'm buying into an underground gold mine north of perth. I have preferred open pit operations but with falling commodity prices, I'm reverting to the old adage of grade is king.

Which mine? Or is it secret men's business?

Grade is king but labour costs are a huge problem and underground costs are enormously expensive- you've got to find the right balance. Will you be working the lease yourself?

Teriyakicat were you at Agnew?
Nah- started in Kambalda, did a bit at Leinster when Kambalda had a 2 month strike, then went to exploration with a couple of different companies in Kalgoorlie, before finishing in both u/g and o/c mines at Black Flag, Golden Kilometre and Racetrack- all at Mt Pleasant.
Hubby was in Kambalda, Lady Bountiful, Paddington, Kanowna and now is involved with several mines in Kalgoorlie, Meeka, Tassie, and a few others.
