'I think that the fireys are allowed toto put themselves in danger these days, whereas in years gone by, they would've been criticised for not going to fight a particularly bad fire. Once the order to evacuate has been given, if people choose to stay and try and save their homes, it's at their own risk- the firefighters will only help them if they don't endanger their own lives, as you've said.
And good on them for making a stand. Far too many firefighters have died in recent years.
Firefighters who are volunteers can refuse to fight fires that are particularly bad & you can't force the volunteers to do something they don't want to do otherwise volunteer bushfire brigades won't have the numbers to stay open
