Still, that's got nothing on the 16.5 hour days they'll have to "endure" in June...

I was of two minds if this was the right thread or if the "Things that shit me thread" would be the more appropriate.

Is anybody being driven to distraction by the incessant cooing/mating calls of those Malaysian/Indian/Chinese (or whatever
they are) speckled necked doves.

Christ they are irritating, persistent vermin.

You brew a cup of tea and take it and the paper outside and you can guarantee, 5 minutes later the racket kicks in and the morning calm is a memory.

I believe campaigners is the appropriate phrase on this site for these thoroughly pointless creatures.

As an aside, native birds are sadly rarely heard or seen these days.

Can anybody tell me if gings are a relic of the past?

Black cockatoos are both native and endangered. They probably won't be around much longer sadly thanks to invasive species like the little corella, rainbow lorikeet and pink and grey and the state and local government's combined finger pointing and subsequent inertia over the issue.

Crawling apology if inappropriate or if heard before, but that hashtag of yours Beerfish reminds me of the story of the young lady
visiting the doctors complaining about her aviaries.

The doctor stated "surely you mean your ovaries".

No the young woman insisted, it was her aviaries.

Post examination, the doctor observed..."I see what you mean... there has been a **** or two in there".

Speaking of local wildlife, does anybody have the company of bob-tailed lizards in their backyards?

Use to have a family of them when I lived in North Beach.

Splendid creatures for fly control etc.

Nah not the red tails although it wouldn't surprise me if it's only a matter of time since the other species I mentioned are being allowed to breed unchecked and are highly aggressive unlike the placid blacks. The Carnaby's are endangered. They breed down south though and there is a lot of great work being undertaken by some people to create artificial nesting hollows for them. Doesn't change the fact that they have to compete for food and water and roosts with the vermin when they are up here though. Fingers crossed they can survive until public opinion forces the government to do something about the others.

There are quite a few at Piney Lakes (I used to walk my dogs there all the time). They became a lot more prevalent there around the same time as the FSH site was first cleared.

Yes, we have bob-tailed lizards (we call them blue-tongues but same, same) here in our yard. Plenty of them, too. They are great for cleaning up mulberries but look out if you want to grow strawberries!! They're very greedy. I used to take them into school for my kids to show and tell, when they (the kids) were younger and, one day when I wanted to drop into the shop to pick up milk on the way home (after show and tell), I popped the lizard into a calico bag and carried it through the shop... thank goodness nobody asked me to show them the contents of my bag. If I see one, I always pick it up, take off the bloody big fat ever-present cattle ticks that are hanging off them, then let them go. You're right- they're great for keeping lots of bugs away

I think that means they have probably already started sorting out new homes anyway, as it will be a gradual replacement, not something sudden.

Guess it won't be long before it's called Tree-y Lake, hey?

'nest' would have been my own word- it was a while ago that I read it and my memory is not all that good

Keep looking out for them and it is heartening to hear they still are around.

They are rather endearing creatures.

When I was a kid I liked to think of them as a tiny Komodo Dragon.

Since you have a healthy population, do you mind what me inquiring as to what suburb are in you in?

I remember my mum used to feed them raw eggs and cabbage (obviously not fussy eaters) and this never seem to bring about farty responses or cause harm in any way.

Also, it must be a generational thing re the name as bob-tail was mostly used in the 60's and 70's but blue-tongue is now
more commonly used.

I've always called them bobtails. They are part of the blue-tongue family, but when I think of a blue-tongue I think of a longer, smoother lizard.

The bottom one is what you see around Perth. I grew up in the hills and you'd see them almost on a daily basis. Actually ran over one the other day (unavoidable, it moved quicker than I've ever seen one move at the last second when I was doing 110 on Forrest Hwy) but I skillfully avoided two while mountain biking (and had to bail off the bike in the process) so I'm still 1 up in bobtail karma.

What I've noticed more in recent years is the explosion of bandicoots. I don't think I ever saw one as a kid then going back to the hills in my early to mid 20s you'd see the odd one and now they are like quokkas at Rottnest to the point that had to put these bastards everywhere:
