So following on from my post from the other week, I went to the city on Saturday night. First time in ages. Ended up in some area where there were a heap of small bars next to each other down some stairs. Was quite good. Then finished off at the Aviary. Definitely improved since over 5 years ago where there were only a couple of places really to go.

Is it bad that I knew it was Brookfield even with the cryptic reference.

We've improved a lot. Say what you want about Colin and co, but at least shit is getting done.

It's the only clump of downstairs bars I can think of in the city. There's other places like Varnish and Halford which are down stairs but they aren't near any other sub-terranean bars.

A lot of it (referring to the hospitality scene) is in spite of Colin rather than thanks to him. Who remembers having to sigb petitions to allow a small bar to get a licence due to the ******ed RGL restrictions

I'm not as enlightened on that one, but in that post I was referring more in general to things like extended shopping hours, redevelopments, stadium etc.

Yep, Colins Govt has done some pretty bloody good things for Perth. Shopping hours in particular. Royalties for Regions has been great for the rural areas. Bettys Jetty isnt as good as the Carpenter Gov proposal was but at least its no longer a rectangle of dead grass. MRA has done some great work under this Gov too.

Atleast when Colin spends 2 billion, we get something unlike Victoria.

The city is a lot more fun these days.

Went to Urban Orchard the other day. Great use of space that is otherwise wasted. Have a nice afternoon/evening beer in the open air with views of the city.

Now if they could just work on a plastic cup of Coopers not costing $9...

Betty's Jetty lol.

That's the only problem. There's some great stuff around but everything has to be so ****ing hipster. I don't want to drink beer out of an old jam jar, nor do I want to pay $24 for a "Brazilian BBQ" that consists of two ribs on a paper plate.

Just heard Harry Butler died. :(

Remember watching In the Wild on the ABC when I was a kid and flipping through his books that my father had.

I was surprised when I read how old he was. Remember watching his show and it seems so recent. Was a great ambassador for the wildlife and environment and a true gentlemen by all accounts

RIP - Harry Butler

I thought that was more to do with the police having the right to appeal any application and that they treat all applications like it is a Dan Murphy's opening next to a school.

He visited my workplace a few years ago as part of his role with Chevron. Was a bit odd seeing him kitted out in hi-vis work gear that looked a couple of sizes too big for him when you're used to seeing him dressed like a bushman. I remember feeling a little bit starstruck at having seen him though.

I wouldn't oppose that. You'd be surprised at the extent of underage drinking in WA, I doubt opening a bottle shop next to a school would do much more damage. First step to change the binge drinking culture lies with the parents imo.

I think the system is pushing it up hill if it hopes to stop underage drinking by stopping adults being able to get a glass of wine.

"Don't drink, kids!"

*drinks beer after beer at a BBQ while watching the Foster's Melbourne Cup and a replay of a Heineken UEFA Champions League match."

It's a culture of drinking, the first step is to encourage them to drink responsibly and don't pretend that a 17 year 364 day old kid will always comply with the law and go against long-accepted social norms.

"Don't drink kids, but since I wasn't educated with the psychological skills to handle the stresses of life such as keeping a roof over your head, paying for those ridiculous clothes you 'need' every ten minutes or the reckless approach you take towards sex then I need to self medicate to stop me from dealing with these issues in more direct and let's face it - potentially life altering ways, especially for you. So until you get a job and start handling all of your own shit you can't have a beer, you don't need it. Go and sort out yourself and you can have this beer in my hand, I won't need it anymore."

Any surprise Polair was flying around Midland last night ? None

I live in Mirrabooka. I'm more surprised if the police helicopter isn't in the air on a Saturday night.
