Not much of a soccer fan but wouldn't quite call it a 'shit' sport. Now Rugby League, that's a shit sport. In saying that I'm surprised that they've never got another team up and going to replace the Reds in Perth.

The West Coast Pirates are in devlopment now, predicted entrance to the league some time after 2018, my cousin is currently in the development squad

They were more popular than the Eagles in the early 90's.

Downfall was when channel 10 got the rights, lost their prime time slot and interest waned. That decision was made on it never rating well in Sydney, they ignored the fact it was going gang busters over here.
This is exactly right. The moment the NBL went off Channel 7 was the moment everybody stopped following it.

Wasn't sure if that had fallen through. What the hell are they thinking though with using the name 'West Coast'??
You what soccer nobs are like. It will be like the word "football", they'll call them selves "West Coast" for a few years then claim that no one else is allowed to use that name.

Wildcats were massive in the early 90s, were on TV prime time on Friday nights, even into the regional areas that only had the 1 commercial channel.
we've always had a simmering interest in basketball, note how it kept pretty relevent even with the NBL being a basketcase and not sure what it wants, or is doing

anyone here a Glory fan?

A bit late but yes, there is a few of us who post in the Glory thread.

I expected the responses but still so disappointed to see that a lot of supporters have jumped off because of the admin.

It's not so much the admin as much as Sage himself. He refuses to take any responsibility when there is a f*** up and gives the CEO job to his mates instead of people who know what they are doing (although the new CEO is thankfully not in Sage's boys club). The unjust bans are also playing a part.

I haven't jumped off but threw in my membership for this season. I couldn't justify forking out again after all that crap and I'm just picking certain games to go to.

LEL. Why do we need a rugby league team? Mining boom is over, only so many scaffolders needed in the city.

I did like the Reds when I was a kid, but that's because they had a cool mascot and I was a kid.

There is a decent NRL fan base in Perth and I guess they are hoping that giving us a team will get some of those fans to convert and attract new fans. They are taking a leaf out of the AFL's book and realising that they need to expand out of their traditional heartlands if they want to be able to compete. Like Freo and West Coast in regards to Victorians, the problem they will have is attracting the top talent out of NSW and QLD. Personally I think it will fail but at least they are giving us a shot.

Not sure how an NRL club would go here. No one at my work likes it or watches it, but quite a few watch/attend Force games. Sydney types hated the Storm for many years (before cap breach) when I lived in Melbourne. I wonder if they'd get behind a Perth club or think it's a waste of time and money.

Has anyone been to a Perth Heat game? I drove passed the field at Thornlie the other day and was curious. Tickets are $25 or $16 which seems okay.

I can see that the NRL want to expand nationally to broaden their appeal (just pipped by the AFL there by a couple of decades) but I just don't see the support for the code outside NSW and Qld.

15-20,000 once a year to watch the Rabbtohs and the Warriors or whoever it is is a different kettle of fish to getting people to support a permanent local side a dozen times a year. The NRL also don't have nearly as good a long game as the AFL. Adelaide and Perth have already had teams that didn't last more than a couple of seasons, Gold Coast are onto their 2nd team and that's lucky to be still going... a Perth team would need to be underwritten for 10+ years to have any chance. I can't see the NRL or anyone else doing that.

I went when they played at Parry Field.

I thought the Perth Heat were consigned to history when the Western Heelers played in whatever incarnation of the competition that was then I heard on the radio one time that the Heat were the champions of the ABL. Go Perth sports team, woo.

'Shit sport' that sold out the biggest stadium we had in minutes.

People lap up Keeping with the Kardashians. Don't underestimate the power of marketing.

Oh yes. Which is why the success of the BBL seems to me to be a furphy - the old state Big Bash would've done just as well with the same level of marketing and it would've been a boon for the state associations. Imagine getting 80,000 at the G for Vic vs NSW! But no, they had to go with franchises, of which the most successful has been the one that has treated it like a state team anyway. gj ca
