Did you guys ever discuss heatwaves as kids in class. There was alaways a theory/rumour that if it was over 40 3 days in a row youd get to go home, like a snow day. Was that just kid rumours or anything to it??
When was a little kid in the late 80s if the school didn't have air conditioning like ours you did get sent home early, it happened at least a couple of times but can't exactly remember what the temperature or requirements were for it though.

We have NEVER had this many days over 40 before, this one pushed it to a record total for summer and its long from finished.
You do know they are basing these statistics off of one AWS right?
Depending where you are in the Suburban sprawl and where the automatic weather stations are located, temperatures vary quite a bit.

I was always under the impression it was 4 days above 38.

Before this week I swear that it has been a very mild summer.

And?

Doesn't make the topic any less boring.

Yeah but we had plenty of those. I think once the classrooms got aircon they did away with it.

I wish they didn't because at my high school the only rooms with aircon were the library, office, staff room and computer rooms. Some days were unbearable.

Our primary school had a couple of demountable classrooms and they would get hot as hell in summer with no aircon and only ceiling fans.

Same here.

Now my kids have ducted refrigerated air con. They didn't get sent home but rather recess & lunch was held indoors.

My wife was telling the kids the other day about how we got to go home from school if it got above 40 or 42 or whatever it was. I don't remember this ever happening, ever.

Work sites pack up and go home after twenty minutes of 37.5 degrees now.

Never at school. But what could they do anyway? Release all the children into the streets and hope the bus can get them home before they evaporate?

Hot Steel, No deal. Only the unionized ones it would seem.

No I can't recall that happening either.

Girrawheen never had aircon (probably still doesn't, ****ing poorcampaigners) so I sent myself home early when it was hot. Also sent myself home when it wasn't hot, but that's not important.

Yep.

38, shut the gate.

I hope you called her out in front of your children for being a lying harpy

Had to lol at the kids that drew the short straw and got stuck for a whole year in the povo demountable.

Back in Melbourne when I was in grade 2, a crazy arsonist set fire to my primary school and the whole lot went up in flames. They demolished the entire building and I spent grades 2,3 and 4 in portable classrooms on the oval. No aircon of course and it was hell on earth in summer.

So, funny Fringe story.

Some background: I've got comps to a number of comedy shows on the condition that I attend and then give a star rating.

Last night I was all set to go and see Wes something-or-other, the Prop Man.

His show was at 10 so I got down to the Skye Bar with about 10 minutes before the show. The bar area was empty, with just a few backpackers chilling with a beer.

Meanwhile the stage area was packed, with almost a full house in to see ‘Comedians Against Humanity’. So that finished and I watched a lot of bogans filing out.

Anyway it got to 10 bells or just after so I went to go and see the show. The door guy looked at my ticket and then went, “that’s one more comp” to the bloke standing next to him, who turned out to be the performer. He looked pretty depressed, almost sulking into his half consumed pint.

So then the door guy says to me, “mate there’s only two comps here to see the show, how would you feel if it didn’t happen” and I was like “fine by me, I don’t want it to be awkward”.

Tbh, I wasn't really looking forward to seeing a prop comedy show - but you see some good stuff and some shit stuff, that's the way it is.

Then the performer – Wes – started telling me about a time he played a show to two people in some dodgy bar in the U.S. One guy liked the show, one guy hated it and they ended up having a fist fight. So I said, “so you’re telling me your show causes violence…?”

Another artist then came over to talk to him and I got the **** out of there.

Once I got home I looked this dude up on youtube to see what I missed. Well, if you can get through the whole four minutes you’re doing better than me.

Thank **** he pulled the pin - I really dodged a bullet there.
