Have a friend who has had her house on the market twice in the last 2 years. The house is an absolute showpiece but the offers have been just plain insulting.

The housing market is just that - a market. People get far too emotional about it. It's a shitty feeling but if you're selling the family home that has 20 or 30 years of memories prospective buyers don't care. They just see a block of land, 4 walls and a roof. And a 1980s kitchen they'll want to renovate. And rooms they'll want to paint. And...

People are also way too conditioned to boom times. 'Well I paid someone $20k to install a new patio, so the house is worth $50k more just because of that'. Nope.

What is 'insulting' is a matter of opinion. I know family friends who sold their home for $500-500k. In 2007 it probably would've fetched $650k. Purchase price of house and land was under $100k. I'm sure they would've loved to get $650k but they were looking to sell in 2015 and not 2007 so that's just the way it goes. Parents of a friend of mine have built on one of the canals in Mandurah in the last couple of years and have massively over capitalised building the dream home they want. Kidding themselves if they think they'd get that money back selling any time soon.

Found myself at Lathlain Park yesterday, wandered down to Archer Street for a coffee, found a little bit of New York in a 2 block stretch of that street. Italian coffee shop/taverna, Korean Supermarket, martial arts studio, butcher, beauty salon, fish and chip shop, pet grooming, Turkish Kebab House, Swiss chocolatier, bakery, pizza restaurant. Nothing seemed to fit in with each other, shops were showing their age, but will be heading there again.

I'm in Perth this week on business. Staying in an apartment in South Perth which is a beautiful spot.

A few observations from an outsider if I may:

* Prior to the weekend, and again this morning, I learnt from the local radio that there were only 2 games of football played this weekend worth previewing / reporting on. Have the AFL culled 14 teams?
* It is very common to see very average unkempt looking men (solid 3-4's with big woolly beards) with a much nicer looking women (7-9's). I always thought a gap of 2 was the limit.
* People seem quite obsessed with money (I guess you could argue that this is not just a Perth phenomenon). I had someone recently ask what my client pays me per day and I politely withheld this information (WTF?).
* What's with all the rules? "Sorry mate, you have to go around to the front entrance (Lucky Shag pub)"; "Sorry, you have to go in and sign for the bill, we can't bring it out to you"; "We can only serve middy's as it's after 12" and so on. Minor grievances I know, but everything seems so controlled.

Other than what I guess are a few negative generalisations it is a lovely city, very easy to get around, and with some good watering holes.

Probably a valid comment for coverage in any city other than Melbourne and (I dare say, haven't been there for a while) Tassie. Maybe you just notice the coverage of WA teams going from 95% of the reporting to 11.11111% and there seems a "hole" in the reporting?

You can watch some of those free to air football shows and they will spend maybe 30 seconds on an average week out of 30 mins to an hour.

Rubbish. I've been to Melbourne loads of times and keep up with the news on the AFL while interstate, and I can count on one hand the number of times the Eagles were mentioned in print media or TV. There also wasn't a single West Coast product in any of the AFL stores I happened to pass by.

You come here, you can easily deal with the saturation coverage of WC/Freo. I know I've heard way too much about Richmond over there.

This is an agreement all of us blokes have made. Ensures non-gay women HAVE to pick one us.

Have a pretty piss weak effort and had quite a few compliments on the weekend. Couple blokes I know with ridiculous sized beards are always getting girls coming up and chatting to them

There is a special area that will be set up in prime viewing position. Two of the long-term carparks will also be free on the day.

I don't want to be that guy but it's 11m longer than an A380 with 9m wider wings. I don't see the attraction.

If I was going to the airport anyway it'd be cool to see it but I'm not going to drive there just to catch a glimpse.

Nah, it's fair enough. I'm a bit of an aviation enthusiast and have read up a lot on its history, but I completely understand people not being interested.
