Building is shonky af all round. The problems with our newly built surf club building are beyond belief.

The older I get the more I fancy myself as a DIYer despite having no trade qualifications whatsoever.

Businesses, trades etc. that aren't ****ing useless are few and far between.

I did woodwork at school until year 10. I was OK, but I wouldn't say I was a budding craftsman or cabinet maker. Measure twice, cut once. Pretty simple stuff. Unless you run a trade business in Perth. In which case it's turn up hours later or earlier than you said you would. Measure once. **** up. Come back and measure again. Cut once. **** up. Go away and cut again. **** up. Cut on site. Install. The only thing Perth businesses seem to place pride in is demanding payment. /rant

Definitely before me then. Didn't realise it had been around that long.

:D Im contemplating how I should interpret that. I sometimes shock myself how long I've been around

Apparently they built it with a loading dock too small to deal with all its medical deliveries.

Sounds similar to when they built FSH and the corridors couldn't fit to trolleys at the same time

Come measure something. Never come back.

Had flooring guys turn up at our house to lay our wood flooring but we hadn't had our driveway installed so they had to carry all the timber packs up to the house by hand across sand. Guy cracks the shits at me saying they don't normally do houses without driveways (like I'd tricked them into it or something) and asked me if I could give them a hand carrying it all in. I said sure thing, I charge $100 an hour.

I had a stone benchtop put in. The guys came to measure (twice) then when they came to install it they stood around head scratching and asked me 'gee it's a big piece of stone, how are we going to get it inside?'. I dunno, you are the guys who do it for a living - did you not consider that previously? They ended up needing to trim 20-40mm off the main piece anyway and I let them cut it in situ (they used a vacuum on the dust and the room was gutted apart from cabinets and pretty dusty anyway) otherwise I would've been there all ****ing day as they took it outside and back in again.

Had the same problems getting a splashback, too. Measuring up a splashback isn't a quick and dirty 'yep that's about 3m x 0.5m or so' with a tape measure, you use a laser and measure each cut around a rangehood, window bay etc, make allowances for joins, silicon etc. After all that they come to install it and it's wrong and they have to come back again later.

Same problems again getting windows - and they are expensive AF. These aren't Joe Handyman out of the local paper who'll give anything a go, these are well established businesses with allegedly good reputations.

The only glowingly positive review I can provide is for the guys I used to move a pool table. 8 x 4 foot, slate top and weighs a ton and they had it out of one house and into another (5 min away) within an hour or so. I was doing it as a favour for a friend and dropped off a cue rack and some cues, boxes of balls etc. leaving about 5-10 minutes after the pool table guys left and they already had the table set up and were levelling off the legs. #efficient

Flooring, painting, kit cabinetry, most landscaping, basic electrics (on the DL)... unless you know someone just DIY.

Organise for a quote and never show

I got a quote for windows at their shop using my measurements. Talked with the lady about frame types and materials, glass types etc. and agreed that she'd sent through a detailed quote for 2 types of glass.

A week later she sent through the quote and I agreed to a site measure. They came out, confirmed my measurements and said I'd need some extra angle (we're talking 5-10m of L shaped aluminium, that's it) on the frame because of the double brick cavity. New quote comes through by email a week later and it's something like $1000 more.

I went to another business and they gave a quote that was pretty similar. Did a site measure and said I'd seem some extra angle on the frame because of the double brick cavity. Bloke rang me that afternoon and said the quote would have to go up, and it was something like $50.

Suffice to say my business went to the latter. Who forgot the ****ing extra angle anyway and took weeks to come back and finish the job.

Perth!

Geez I know a lot of it is pretty simple but I would not encourage this at all..

Guys that did my kitchen didn't make the microwave space big enough for my extra large one, even though I told them when designing and they measured for it. They knocked off $300 from the bill though for us to buy a new one.

Ha, yeah DIY electrics isn't really recommended. I'm just talking about replacing switches and GPOs. I had a heap of old ones that I replaced.

When you are talking a $5 switch that will take a minute or two to install it's hard to justify calling a sparky that will charge you $100 absolute minimum. I never work on anything without turning off everything at the mains, though. And giving the old back of the hand test to make sure. #cowboy #niceknowingyou

lol, yeah that's fine if you turn the main switch off and have basic common sense.
