Welcome to The Pieman 2018 - entering its seventh year

Named after the Bulldog's highest ever goalscorer, Simon "The Pieman" Beasley, this comp is to add a little thrill to every goal we kick during the year.

This year Vinegar Mess will be helping me out – among other things to ensure we have continuity whenever I’m away. Thanks VM!

HOW IT WORKS
The idea is you pick a team of 6 WB players and they get Pieman Points for every goal they kick. How many points they register is determined by the handicap value they are allocated at the start of the year. Your best 4 player scores each match make up your weekly Pieman score.

You also get 11 chances over the home and away rounds at selecting a "banker". The banker has to be one of the players in your team. Banker Points are calculated the same way (goals x handicap). The only differences are that your banker points automatically go onto your weekly total (regardless of the best 4 scores) and you can't get more than 60 points per banker goal, even if your banker's handicap is higher than 60.

There's also a mid-year trade period in which you can offload injured players and non-performing spuds in exchange for new players (but subject to new handicaps too).

HOW TO ENTER
1. Read the full rules below if you're not sure how it works (or ask me a question)
2. Check out the 2018 handicaps (see post below)
3. Select your six players
4. Post them here before the start time of our Round 1 match on 23 March

We'll create a Pieman match thread for each round. If you want to nominate a banker for that round you do it there.

The Pieman 2018 – Rules of the Game

OVERVIEW

The rules are unchanged from 2017.

The aim is to select a group of six WB players (your Pieman Team) at the start of the year who will help you score the most Pieman Points over the year.

Every player is allocated a specific “handicap” value. Pieman Points are calculated by multiplying the number of goals each player kicks by his Pieman handicap. Only your best 4 players’ scores count each week.

RULES IN DETAIL

A. ENTRIES
Anyone can enter by lodging their team in this thread.

Each contestant must nominate 6 WB players in his/her Pieman Team. They can include rookies.

Once an entry is lodged you can make changes right up to the start of Round 1. Any number of players can be changed but changes must be done with a new post, not an edit to the original post. Be warned: if you edit your original post the change won't be recognised.

Contestants may have the same 6 players as any other contestant, i.e. teams don't have to be unique.

Entries will still be accepted after Round 1 but they will not get any score for WB games already completed or under way at the time of entry. No changes are allowed to any entries after Round 1 (until trade period).

B. BANKER
You are allowed to select a banker for any 11 matches over the Home and Away rounds
. A Banker is a player in your 6-man team that you think you can “bank on” kicking goals. It does not have to be the same player each time.

When your banker kicks goals, you automatically get Banker Points in your weekly total. These points are calculated in the usual way (goals x handicap) but they will count toward your weekly total even if the player you chose as banker is not in your top 4 that week. See examples below under “SCORING”.

There is however a cap of 60 points per goal on banker points. So if your banker has a handicap of say 75 you will only get 60 banker points for each goal he kicks.

You must nominate your Banker no later than the advertised start of the WB match by posting in the Pieman thread for that round.

You are allowed to change or drop your Banker nomination as long as it is done by the advertised start time of the match and is done in the relevant thread. You must change it with a new post (not an edit to an old post). If your chosen banker is a late withdrawal from the WB team and you don’t replace him you will not be deemed to have used your banker option that week.

Default Banker: You will be awarded a default banker in a round if you have not nominated one and you have at least as many banker selections left as there are rounds still to play (excluding finals). This is so you don’t miss out on your quota of bankers if you are indisposed later in the season. Your default Banker will be the player in your team with the lowest handicap who is playing that match. If you have players with equal lowest handicaps, it will be player with the lowest jumper number. If you have NO players playing that match you simply miss out on using your banker.

Finals: If the WB make the finals, one banker selection will be allowed for each finals game. Default bankers will also be allocated in finals if necessary.

C. SCORING
Every listed player (including rookies) will be given a handicap value at the start of the year. This value will be used as a multiplier for any goals they score in WB matches (H&A fixture plus any finals the WB play in).

Each week the players’ goals scored for that round will be multiplied by their handicap value, e.g.

Dickson 4 goals x handicap of 13 = 52 pts
Dahlhaus 2 goals x handicap of 24 = 48
Picken 1 goal x handicap of 20 = 20
Suckling 1 goal x handicap of 28 = 28
Bontempelli 2 goals x handicap of 12 = 24
Cordy 0 goals x handicap of 48 = 0

Each Pieman Team’s scores for its best 4 players + banker points (if applicable) will be aggregated each week and accumulated through the year. So a Pieman team comprising the players in the above example would get a score of 52+48+28+24=152 points. Picken’s score of 20 is not counted as it was not in the top 4 player scores for that Pieman team. However if Picken was the banker the team score would be 172 points (152+20), or if Dahlhaus was banker it would be 200 points (152+48).

No subs will be provided if any of your team are injured, suspended, dropped, etc.

The winner for each round will be declared the Kelvin Award winner for that week (named after Kelvin Templeton, most goals in any match for Footscray/WB - 15 goals vs St Kilda on 1 July 1978).

The Pieman team with the highest accumulated score over the whole season will be declared the Pieman for 2018 (you get fleeting BF glory and a pie ‘n' sauce BF badge).

Goal scorers will be as listed on the official WB/AFL websites.
A season leaderboard will be posted after each round, as far as possible.

D. TRADING
Changing players will be allowed:
(1) Before the start of the year (i.e. before Round 1). See “ENTRIES” above.
(2) In the designated trade period: 3 June 2018 and 14 June 2018 (up to the start time for the WB Rd 13 match against Port).

In exceptional circumstances I may permit changes of players for other reasons.
(NB: It has never happened yet!)

Having players with long-term injuries, suspensions, mid-season retirements, etc is just bad luck. You will have to carry them - or offload them if there is a trade period coming up.

For the trade period, contestants may offload any number of players and select others in their place. New handicaps will be published for the trade period and will apply only to the new selections and only from the subsequent round until the end of the season. The new handicaps will not override the earlier handicaps for players selected at the start of the season who still remain in your team.

Trading is not compulsory. You may leave your team as it is.
Trading players and the issuing of new handicaps will not affect any round scores accumulated prior to the trade period.

You may trade out a player and immediately re-draft him if you wish. (You might want to do this if his handicap value has increased at the time of the mid-season trade period.)

Hopefully no rule changes will be required during the season but I reserve the right to make minor changes at any time within the spirit of the competition.
