Competitions The Pieman 2019

Welcome to The Pieman 2019 – now in its eighth year

Named after the Bulldog's highest ever goalscorer, Simon "The Pieman" Beasley, this comp is designed to add a little thrill to every goal we kick during the year.

Once again Vinegar Mess will be helping out this year – thanks VM!

AND FOR SOMETHING NEW … PIEMAN X!

We have a little add-on this year, called PiemanX. There’s no obligation to play but it might add a little bit of fun and intrigue without requiring you to do anything more (other than nominate your PiemanX teammates at the start of the year).

PiemanX is where you form superteams by linking up with two other Pieman entrants, making teams of three. So there’s a separate ladder for these “superteams”. See details in a separate post below.

HOW IT WORKS
The idea of The Pieman is you pick a team of 6 Western Bulldogs players and they get Pieman Points for every goal they kick. How many points they register is determined by the handicap value they are allocated at the start of the year. Only your best 4 player scores each match count towards your weekly Pieman score.

You also get 11 chances over the home and away rounds at selecting a "banker" to earn some bonus points. The banker has to be one of the players in your team. Banker Points are calculated the same way (goals x handicap). The only differences are that your banker points automatically go onto your weekly total (regardless of the best 4 scores) and you can't get more than 50 points per banker goal, even if your banker's handicap is higher than 50.

There's also a mid-year trade period in which you can offload injured players and non-performing spuds in exchange for new players (but subject to new handicaps too).

HONOUR ROLL
Previous winners have been

HOW TO ENTER

1. Read the full rules below if you're not sure how it works (or ask me a question)
2. Check out the 2019 handicaps (these will be posted tomorrow night)
3. Select your six players
4. Post them here before the start time of our Round 1 match on 23 March

We'll create a Pieman match thread for each round. If you want to nominate a banker for that round you do it there before match start time.

The Pieman 2019 – Rules of the Game

OVERVIEW
The aim is to select a group of six WB players (your Pieman Team) at the start of the year who will help you score the most Pieman Points over the year.

Every player is allocated a specific “handicap” value. Pieman Points are calculated by multiplying the number of goals each player kicks by his Pieman handicap. Only your best 4 players’ scores count each week.

Changes in 2019

The rules are largely unchanged from 2018. The only changes are:
  • Maximum banker score has been reduced from 60 points to 50 points.
  • There will be no default bankers any more – use ‘em or lose ‘em
PiemanX

We’re also trialling a new concept called PiemanX where you form superteams (with two other Pieman entrants). However this is entirely optional and whether you go in it or not it won’t affect your score in the Pieman comp that you are used to. Details of PiemanX and how to enter are posted separately below and in the PiemanX thread.

RULES IN DETAIL

A. ENTRIES
Anyone can enter by lodging their team in this thread.

Each contestant must nominate 6 WB players in his/her Pieman Team. They can include rookies.

Once an entry is lodged you can make changes right up to the start of Round 1. Any number of players can be changed but changes must be done with a new post, not an edit to the original post. Be warned: if you edit your original post the change won't be recognised.

Contestants may have the same 6 players as any other contestant, i.e. teams don't have to be unique.

Entries will still be accepted after Round 1 but they will not get any score for WB games already completed or under way at the time of entry. No changes are allowed to any entries after Round 1 (until trade period).

B. BANKER
You are allowed to select a banker for any 11 matches over the Home and Away rounds
. A Banker is a player in your 6-man team that you think you can “bank on” kicking goals. It does not have to be the same player each time.

When your banker kicks goals, you automatically get Banker Points in your weekly total. These points are calculated in the usual way (goals x handicap) but they will count toward your weekly total even if the player you chose as banker is not in your top 4 that week. See examples below under “SCORING”.

There is however a cap of 50 points per goal on banker points. So if your banker has a handicap of say 75 you will only get 50 banker points for each goal he kicks.

You must nominate your Banker no later than the advertised start of the WB match by posting in the Pieman thread for that round.

You are allowed to change or drop your Banker nomination as long as it is done by the advertised start time of the match and is done in the relevant thread. You must change it with a new post (not an edit to an old post). If your chosen banker is a late withdrawal from the WB team and you don’t replace him you will not be deemed to have used your banker option that week.

Finals: If the WB make the finals, one banker selection will be allowed for each finals game.

C. SCORING
Every listed player (including rookies) will be given a handicap value at the start of the year. This value will be used as a multiplier for any goals they score in WB matches (H&A fixture plus any finals the WB play in).

Each week the players’ goals scored for that round will be multiplied by their handicap value, e.g.

Dickson 3 goals x handicap of 12 = 36 pts
McLean 2 goals x handicap of 21 = 42
Lloyd 1 goal x handicap of 14 = 14
Suckling 1 goal x handicap of 34 = 34
Bontempelli 2 goals x handicap of 11 = 22
Cordy 0 goals x handicap of 52 = 0

Each Pieman Team’s scores for its best 4 players + banker points (if applicable) will be aggregated each week and accumulated through the year. So a Pieman team comprising the players in the above example would get a score of 36+42+34+22=134 points. Lloyd’s score of 14 is not counted as it was not in the top 4 player scores for that Pieman team. However if Lloyd was the banker the team score would be 148 points (134+14), or if Dickson was banker it would be 170 points (134+36).

No subs will be provided if any of your team are injured, suspended, dropped, etc.

The winner for each round will be declared the Kelvin Award winner for that week (named after Kelvin Templeton, most goals in any match for Footscray/WB - 15 goals vs St Kilda on 1 July 1978).

The Pieman team with the highest accumulated score over the whole season will be declared the Pieman for 2019 (you get fleeting BF glory and a pie ‘n' sauce BF badge).

Goal scorers will be as listed on the official WB/AFL websites.
A season leaderboard will be posted after each round, as far as possible.

D. TRADING
Changing players will be allowed:
(1) Before the start of the year (i.e. before Round 1). See “ENTRIES” above.
(2) In the designated trade period: 3 June 2019 to 15 June 2018 (up to the start time for the WB Rd 13 match against Carlton).

In exceptional circumstances we may permit changes of players for other reasons.
(NB: It has never happened yet!)

Having players with long-term injuries, suspensions, mid-season retirements, etc is just bad luck. You will have to carry them - or offload them if the trade period is coming up.

For the trade period, contestants may offload any number of players and select an equal number of players in their place. New handicaps will be published for the trade period and will apply only to the new selections and only from the subsequent round until the end of the season. The new handicaps will not override the earlier handicaps for players selected at the start of the season who still remain in your team.

Trading is not compulsory. You may leave your team as it is.
Trading players and the issuing of new handicaps will not affect any round scores accumulated prior to the trade period.

You may trade out a player and immediately re-draft him if you wish. (You might want to do this if his handicap value has increased at the time of the mid-season trade period.)

Hopefully no rule changes will be required during the season but we reserve the right to make minor changes at any time within the spirit of the competition.

PiemanX

This year we’re trialling a new idea called PiemanX. We’re hoping it adds a little bit more intrigue to the season.

The idea is to collaborate with other contestants in the Pieman comp to form superteams, (hereafter called “PiemanX teams”).

Each PiemanX team must comprise three Pieman comp entrants who agree to play together.

Apart from nominating your PiemanX team you don’t really need to do anything extra. However … you may choose to consider forms of collaboration as the year progresses, e.g. who to include in your respective Pieman teams, who to trade in/out during the trade period and when to use your allocated bankers.

We’ll need at least 4 or 5 PiemanX teams to make it viable – a dozen teams would be great – so please give it a go and let’s see how it pans out.

RULES

Each PiemanX team comprises three Pieman entrants (teams) who agree to play PiemanX together and who nominate in the PiemanX thread.

No Pieman player can be a member of more than one PiemanX team at any one time.

PiemanX teams score points as follows:

  • Each regular Pieman team has 6 WB players so it follows that each PiemanX team has 18 WB players. However some of these will be duplicates (e.g. Schache might appear multiple times). Only the best four WB player scores out of these 18 are counted and they must be four different players. That is you can’t use any one WB player twice in working out your weekly PiemanX score.
  • The best banker score within the PiemanX team also counts toward the team score for that round.
Weekly PiemanX team scores are accumulated over the season and the team with the highest aggregate season score is the PiemanX winner.

Trade period

Just to add a bit of spice …

If you are unhappy with your PiemanX team any two of you can vote out the third team member but only during the Pieman trade period of 3-15 June. But before you do that make sure you have someone lined up to take their place!

All PiemanX scores for the team to that point will stand, but obviously any scores accruing after the trade period must be based on the new team members.

NB: Since it’s a new concept we might decide to make some minor tweaks to the rules before Round 1 but we don’t want to make changes once the season’s under way if we can help it. Also, if we don’t get enough entries we’ll ditch it. Feedback on the concept is welcome at any time.

HOW TO ENTER

There is a dedicated PiemanX thread. Get agreement to form a team from two other Pieman entrants. There is no “captain” as such so any one of you can nominate your PiemanX team in that thread. Make sure you say who the members are.

Include a name for your PiemanX team. The usual BF rules of no offensive or obscene names will apply.

If you want to enter PiemanX but don’t know who to enter with, just list yourself in the PiemanX thread as an available player and someone can draft you into their team, either by PM’ing you or simply by claiming you in the PiemanX thread. (You can however knock back being drafted if you don’t want to be in that team.)

We will moderate the thread if it will help – e.g. by summarising who’s still available to join a PiemanX team, so you don’t have to go trawling through all the posts trying to work out who's available.

SOME TACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

As noted you don’t really have to do anything extra – you can just form a team and see how it pans out. However it’s probably going to help your chances if your PiemanX team:

  • Has a good spread of WB players. No point having too much doubling or tripling up.
  • Rations out the use of banker quotas so you have at least one banker between the three of you for every game.
  • Has different bankers in any round that you use more than one banker.
  • Collaborates a little on what might be the best trades to make during trade period.
  • Keeps tactical discussions with teammates to PMs.
Of course all that has to be balanced with you trying to beat all of the opposition players in the main comp – the Pieman. It could get interesting if your closest competitor in the Pieman just happens to be one of your PiemanX teammates!

Oh ... and a little bit of public PiemanX inter-team rivalry and banter is just fine!

W-e-e-e-lll, OK maybe voting out your PiemanX team mate is a bit lowbrow. (It was one of those late night inspirations that don't sound so clever in the morning :$)

Happy to remove it - or leave it in - whatever you reckon. Should we just stick with the teams as nominated at the start of the year?

I think we should keep it. It's going to be hilarious. It also fits the low-brow theme of AFLX.

Disturbing that nobody has a handicap of 32 or 54.
I will go with Wally with handicap 16, Jackson Macrae [almost 32], Lllloyyyd, Bonti, Caleb and Shackattack

So you think Dale M has less chance of getting a goal than others who prob won't get a game :p

My only other question as usual is 'What did you say after listen carefully?'

Morris last kicked a goal in 2011. So, yes.
Interesting trivia: two thirds of Morris's career goals have been kicked against Sydney.
