The plight of Blighty

I'm also more inclined to believe he has quit, or if he was sacked he would have put himself in a position where the board could do nothing else.

St.Kilda would have had nothing to gain by sacking him based on results. A sacking would mean a huge pay-out, and hiring and paying for an inexperienced caretaker coach who is less likely to get results for the remaining 7 rounds, not to mention scaring away any prospective coaches from doing the job in 2002 and beyond.

He was sacked. There was a clause in his contract.
He was causing dissention. Apparently a group of parents of the young players, including Reiwoldt, said that they would head elsewhere if Blight didn't start changing his ways. Coupled with his verbal jousting, he was sacked.

This will give Eddie some great w@nking material - no doubt we will hear the full story tonight on The Collingwoody Show!

I hadn't heard this anywhere else. What a pi sser!
Does Mrs Riewoldt have more stroke than the manager that represents him? Perhaps there is a job for her with the AFL Players Association!

Grant Thomas

Did any of you guy's read the Hun Friday? In Grant Thomas' bio, it said he played 7 games with North and also was chairman of selectors. When the hell was he there?, I've never heard of him before today.

Off the top o' me head... 92 games with St.Kilda, North and Fitzroy (7 with us), and spent some time in an administrative role with North. Chairman of selectors in the early 90s I think.

Under Schimma, hmmm. Listening to what Stan Alves was saying Thursday night, that might be a part of the reason Schimma got shafted, he's always had ambitions to coach, and doesn't mind sticking his bib into the coaches territory. Stan couldn't work with him and neither could Blight. Glad he wasn't around for long with Denis, then.

Reported in this mornings Hun that Denis told Thomas that there was room for only one coach at Arden Street, so Thomas had to leave.

LOL... don't take my "early 90s" estimate as gospel! Just an educated guess.

Sorry Darky, I never went to the 'USC School of Journalism' and 'How To Cover Your Arse While Talking S.h.i.t 101', should have chucked a couple of "I'm led to believe"s or "I have it on good authority"s or the ever popular "It's my gut feeling" ;) ;)

On Triple M pre-game today, there was plenty of discussion about Grant Thomas and Malcolm Blight.

While he was involved with St.Kilda, he worked alongside three coaches :

Blight - who he appears to have had a falling-out with
Watson - who said he was one of the most supportive people he had ever worked with
Alves - who despised him and couldn't work with him

It was also mentioned that Thomas was given the flick from North (as Chairman Of Selectors) after Pagan's first year, as Denis didn't see eye to eye with him either. It wasn't mentioned how long Thomas had been there.

Just relaying what was said on Triple M by Patrick Smith, Dermott Brereton, Steve Quartermain and Brian Taylor.

Pagan, Blight, and Alves are all very headstrong people who want things their way. Watson strikes me as someone who would be more open to what other's say. The other thing about the Blight-Thomas relationship is that Blight and Alves are very close friends and I reckon that Blight was fuming over the treatment of Alves....perhaps there could have been a residual feeling from that in regards to how Blight may have regarded Thomas.
