Based on what the guy at the Port Store said, I think it's a little bit like the European soccer team lines of thinking. Change it up so everyone buys a new guernsey, then another one when you change it back.

I prefer the solid black but i'm okay with this
The only acceptable reason.

You change the away kit, not the home one!

If the white back panel is a move to slowly, bit by bit, bring in the prison bars (wharf pylons, whatever you choose to call it) as our permanent AFL guernsey then I'm ok with it. Slowly sneak up on everyone then BANG!!!

Outside of that reasoning it makes no sense. Why even mess with what we already have? It's like putting a tail fin on a Rolls Royce.

Home kits get changed every single year in Euro soccer, some pretty drastically too.

I'm not advocating for change here, I'd rather we treat the jumper with reverence like it's the All Blacks jersey or something (it's that damn good in my eyes), but tinkering with the home design is a pretty widespread practice in world sport.

Why didn't they just use the back panel for when we play teams away, wearing white shorts, but still wearing the black jumper, like when we played Hawthorn in the 2014 Preliminary Final. That's when it should be worn, with white shorts.

No, it must only be on the home or on some weird one off in the Showdown for some reason.

Having 3 H&A jumpers is in vogue. It's not like it'd get shot down by the AFL.

I'm surprised the AFL have given it the green light for this reason.

They've had a massive hard on for having a "light" and a "dark" team in recent years, which is why Geelong and North are almost always wearing white shorts (even at home).

So now when we play these light-coloured teams it will look fine from the front, but both teams will have a white back and dark number.

It's stupid really.

In a perfect world...

Main kit: Full black Vs. Shorts, socks, everything. Worn at ALL times unless we are away AND there is a clash.

1st alternative kit: PBs with white shorts to resolve the clash. If that still doesn't resolve it (arguably just Collingwood) then...

2nd alternative kit: Full white Vs.

I actually rang the port store today and I asked whether they were changing the guernseys and he said the only change will be is we will have Renault front and back of both guernseys, said nothing about the panel.

No teal socks?

As others have said, a white panel w/ white cuffs and white shorts would look mint as an away guernsey.

All black home,
White panel, white cuffs, white shorts away
.................teal clash

Although I love the idea of the prison bar jumper as a once every couple of years thing. Makes me more special that way.

If only we'd wheel the damn thing out some time soon.

I hate the idea of a prison bar away/clash jumper. It's either our main jumper or it's a special occasion jumper IMO. The prison bars should never be relegated to a secondary guernsey.

Yeah but it won't happen unless there's an unprecedented backflip that allows us to go full magpie no holds barred.

The set above is the best "realistic" solution, but even that will take some work.
Realistically they will never let us wear the pb Guernsey home clash or away..
