Or Design By Eddie...

"Not enuf teal"

There were a ridiculous amount of 'experts' involved in that process, including some of our own board members.

We have been incredibly lucky to have a second go at it and to have nailed it this time.

Do you reckon we could have gone in with black and white provided it wasn't with a striped design? I reckon it could have been a lot simpler and easier for our entry under a new nickname rather than to totally overhaul the brand with a new colour as the focus.

Would have been interesting to sit in on some of those meetings for sure. (a statement Magpiespower would detest. F**kin meetings!)

I don't think the AFL would have allowed us to be solely black and white. The silver and teal was a compromise that allowed us to keep our original colours as the base. (It's my guess that Port wanted to only add 'silver' to black and white but the AFL stipulated 'teal' so they went with both thinking they could drop one later.)

Interestingly, back in 88/89, I was very good mates with a guy whose dad was a significant power broker in SANFL circles. I know that even before Port had made a move, there had been discussions regarding green being a preferred colour because it hadn't been used in any previous VFL teams. This was also around the time I'd heard mention of Sharks as a mascot.

F@%kin' meetings!

Pretty sure the bloke who designed our guernsey and logo was a (nominal) Glenelg supporter?

But yeah, we didn't have a hope in hell of wearing black and white. IIRC, McAllister was barking loud about it back in 1990.

Wasn't the official line that the teal was supposed to represent water or Port River or some shit? Meanwhile, everyone's thinking, yeah, nah, it's coz teal was the "it" colour of sports teams at the time.

Love to see some of our other concepts/designs. The Crows stumbled across some of theirs at the bottom of a cupboard or something a few years back.

Jabberjaw would've been an awesome game day mascot...

Best heritage guernseys ever.

Dunno if I'm vibing with green, but maybe it's the scarring from Freo's green+purple and red.

Luckily teal is the most pog flippingly 90s colour out there but it's worked well for us as a crowd colour and a tertiary colour.

Saints ran out in that strip for Riewoldt's 300th. North has also wheeled out the bouncing kangaroo jumper from the 90s... AND West Coast has worn the yellow strip twice this year I think. It's been a good year for 90s throwbacks.

The shark's mouth looks more like the sarlacc pit.

Indeed, the best since the heritage themed rounds. If only these teams with them this year decided "what the heck?" and used them against each other.

I doubt it. I can't find anything to back this up but I remember reading somewhere that the original proposal was a black, white and silver combo, but even this was considered to be too similar to Collingwood.

Therefore another colour was needed and blue was one of the main options, but I think teal won out in the end due to its apparent popularity at the time and the fact that it wasn't used by any other AFL/SANFL club.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about this and I honestly think teal is the best colour to go with black and white.* I'm glad we went with it, regardless of 90's trends.

*Only in it's current proportions

(I also think pink would be aesthetically pleasing but it's not a footy colour)

Dusting off the magenta would've taken some big balls but I reckon it would look great in place of teal on the BiB.

Is that white zigzag meant to be the SA coastline, and if so, why is the water green and the land blue? o_O
