Maybe they've already finished their drinks before the photo? ;)

Only a small sample size obviously but still good to see. With Fagan and Noble declaring when they arrived that they would create the right culture, it wouldn't surprise me if there is a general alcohol ban in season - player driven too.

I know this is the positives thread and all, but I can categorically say this is certainly not the case. Nothing wrong with young men enjoying themselves though, as long as they're being responsible

Yeah I assumed there would be but up until the first 4 rounds there were still several photos with players having drinks and being out and about which surprised me given where we are at. I know people will argue 'it's not the end of the world' and 'come on.. let them live a little".. but I guarantee you that Lebron James, Gary Ablett Junior, Tom Brady etc.. are not boozing once or twice a week whilst in season at their respective sports. I do different health and fitness programs and different forms of training, and if you are 100% committed even a few beers here and there effects mentality and body comp. Unless we are fine with a local footy culture, I would suggest at our stage of development.. boozing should be at a minimum if at all.

Yeah they all booze a fair bit and are often in the Vally mid season.

IMO Fagan would be going down the "we will treat you as an adult" route, he wants the players to take ownership of the club and the values that they want to stand for.

I can't see too much of a problem if a player has 1 or 2 (maximum) drinks during the week, you do not want them getting on it though.

Don't want to start a drinking debate again. I did want to offer a positive though. I commented a few times last year and early this year that there was almost always booze on the table or drinks in hand with players (in season too). I liked seeing that BBQ the other night at bastinacs with about 8 of them and the was no booze to be seen, on a bye round.

Booze is not the end of the world, but if you truley.. truely want to uphold elite standards, and you truely want to get better at an elite level, then boozing cannot be a part of your routine in season.

Not sure if its player driven or club sanctioned, but there has been no booze present in any of their holiday pics - bar robbo having one with his Dad and grandad which I would NEVER say was inappropriate :)

I'll drink to that.

Well, it's bye round for us and that's a positive for me and Nick.
My oldest son Justin and I are meeting Nick in Melbourne Wednesday and then driving to my home town of Donald.
Catching up with my old man and mum and watching a game of country footy.
Donald v St Arnaud at St Arnaud.
Looking forward to that.
Go Saints!!:D.......St. A my home town

Donald 67 def. St Arnaud 55 :'(;)

.....Looks like a great day all round for you and your family catch-up Robbo18!

Hope you had a lovely time with your parents and sons. Enjoy and safe trip home:)

I like how we are just having the reserves players play in the reserves to develop. Honestly feel that they will develop better there than be rushed into the wolves in the seniors.
Players like Allison, Cox, Witherden, Big O are showing big signs that they can be quality players. But we will wait until they are fully ready. Genuinely believe that all of them will be a big part of our future

On another note, (someone should make a thread about this as well) but it is exciting to see that we are starting to develop some leaders. Would be really interesting to discuss who might be the next club captain.

We already know players like Beams, Rocky, Zorko, Robinson, Lester, even Christensen and MArtin were leaders in the pre-season. But it is exciting to see we are starting to draft and develop young guys with leadership potential. These players being Andrews, Berry, Keayes, N.Robertson, even Taylor was captain of the Vic Country draft team. My bet for the next captain of the Lions if Jarrod Berry, leadership material written all over him.

Fages the other day made mention of how impressed he was with Harro leading the defence at such a young age. Wouldn't mind betting it'll be him given he's a couple of years ahead of Berry. But yeah Berry is a born leader. Loved hearing the black arm-band story. Good problem to have.

Think Berry has all the signs but think at this stage Andrews is the anointed one.

Sorry for the intrusion, but Andrews is gonna be a gun. A few of the bombers contingent think he is very fletcher like, but probably a better mark than Dustin, which is hard to say as he was my all time fave.

Your academy talls have set your spine up beautifully. Hipwood is probably the only young forward in the league that has the bag of tricks and X factor to rival Joe (Daniher) in the long run. With ballenden as well, it's good to see the academies working, you have lost your fair share of young guys

Agree 100%. Andrews made for the captaincy well before any other player. Would love to see the leadership group in 2-3 years.....Andrews, Hippy, Matho, Berry, McLuggage. Potentially 5 of the best in the comp given 60-80 games under their belts.

I see him more as a Mitch Robbo type. That speech he gave before his first game was just amazing.

Yeah, I think he is the type who can lead by actions but probably isn't suited for an official leadership role.

I love Matho but it genuinely surprises me to see his name come up in leadership discussions a lot.

In one of the lions tv things he made a content aloof the lines of 'I probably annoy him (captain) but I'm sure he loves me'.

Lot to respect in that - knows who he is, knows how he interacts, doesn't always expect to be adored and knows that good relationships don't mean bffs.

Old fashioned leadership at its best.

Schache signs, NEAFL team wins, Lions never behind and won every quarter against Freo.
You forgot "once upon a time" before that fairytale.

The "go home five" compensation. That we all thought was terrible. And yes, it'd be great to have Yeo, Polec and Docherty running around for us right now.
But our compensation is starting to look pretty damn good.
Yeo = Taylor
Docherty = Cutler
Polec = Gardiner and Robertson
Longer = McStay
All in all we smashed that draft :)
