That was my instinct too, but a recent interview I heard with David Noble makes me think it could actually be a thing.

As Noble described it, the path of the new CBA (20 per cent in the first year then say 2 per cent each year after that) is having a big inflationary impact on contracts being negotiated this year. Added to that, since the overall cap is jumping 20 per cent and clubs are scrambling to figure out how to pay the minimum 95 per cent , it means having to look at re-negotiating with contracted players to shift some future contract value forward into this year.

The way Hipwood is going, he's likely to get a pretty big pay bump in 2019. We might be keen to renegotiate with him to front end some of that increase into this contract and maintain a slower rate of increase from 2019 onwards.

EDIT: so picking up your more recent post, we might think that it is hard to value him this far out from 2019 but we have to pay someone and he's as good a chance as anyone to be worth a bump.
Thank you for that opinion. Makes a lot of sense for Brisbane to get him locked in longer term based on your comments above. The other problem that comes to mind is that an early re-commitment to the club will eliminate a bidding war from other clubs who may over inflate his worth because of their desperate need of a KPP. Still brings me to the question: What is a young guy like him worth right now should they want him to re-commit longer term outside of 2019? I would think from his perspective, it would need to be a pretty good offer taking into account he still has 2 1/2 seasons ahead of him before his current contract expires.

Hippy, Keays, Andrews, Allison. All Victorian born. Ballenden is NZ born.

Same with GC's kids. They're either Victorian born, or from Perth.
Thats why they're playing Afl. Born into it.

Gee that is damming stats for Qld development

Not really? They all were developed via the academy system. Who cares what part of this island they were born in?

It's a pure guess, but I figure they all probably grew up in AFL families, where they watched the footy over the weekend on telly. It was the major football code they were exposed to from a young age, and possibly encouraged to play. They didn't grow up in families that denigrated footy.

Hipwood would be playing cricket
Archie Smith would be playing basketball
Ballenden would be playing rugby

And that's just off the top of my head.

yes they are developed by the academy, but it takes the parents to have a passion or somewhat of an interest in the sport to commit to taking the kids to the games every weekend. My comment is that it is damming that none of the elite players are born and raised in Qld. Meaning that their parents passion has been fostered outside of the Qld environment.

You're right, although I was born in Melbourne we moved to Cairns before I could walk and eventually Brisbane, I hardly even knew Australian Rules existed all the way through my childhood. Rugby League and soccer was what my parents funneled me into. All I remember is that Aussie Rules was that game that pansies played and was derided as gayfl and ariel ping pong.

Sorry for the derogatory language but that was what was widely said.

Still very much is.

To a certain extent, nowhere near what it was like back in the 70s and 80s though, the 3peat turned a lot of people around. I went to my first live game a couple of years before the 3peat and thought what a hell of a game this AFL is, I then wiped my Broncos membership and jumped on board the Lions, I was also a very keen follower of English soccer and went to local games. IMO there is no other game like Australian Rules on the planet, you can't beat it particularly live. I love the continual contest for the ball, fitness levels required, and athleticism needed to play it at a high level.

Just want to jump in here before the Port match and the quite possible loss of all footy related happiness.

Watching the NEAFL stream today was so enjoyable. Seeing Schache back with some confidence and playing like we all know he can was great. I'm happy as a supporter but also really happy for him. After a really rough few months, it must be such a relief to just be able to get back to what he does best and play footy.

So many other positives out of the match as well, as there always are in 150 point wins. Witherden looks like possibly the most accurate kick we've had in a long time, Hanley is showing a few small signs that suggest he might have a future in the AFL after all, and Skinner is showing some really encouraging glimpses too.

Plenty of others were great to watch too.

It's just exciting to have a list of young talent that is really starting to show signs of development now. Not particularly optimistic of how this match in Adelaide will go, but over the past few weeks footy has become fun again, and it's been a long time since I've felt that way.

Hipwood is a gun.

Berry is a gun.
IMO McCluggage is starting to show signs that he will be as well. Picking Berry with our 2nd pick last year was the one I was most happy about, I didn't think he would last that long. When we got to those 2 picks I wanted Berry and Witherden, great job list management/recruiters.

Agreed. He'll take a little longer to come on as he builds strength and confidence at this level but the class is on show at this early stage of his career

Ryan Lester is a ripper. He's got his limitations but this is a guy who cracks in and gives the game everything he's got. He should be proud of himself.
Agree he has been very good in most of the games. His lack of pace does not seem to be standing out as much this year.

He was a delist candidate for me early in the season but he has changed my mind, I was wrong on him.

Patience will be required with McCluggage but you see little snippets of what he can do. He won't be that hard inside mid but the receiver from these types and deliver the ball on a platter. 2019/20 is when to have some real expectations on his game as it will take that long to develop his body but this season and next getting the games into him will be invaluable.

I'm starting to come around to this way of thinking actually and eventhough I almost choked on my beer sat night when I heard, "Lester with speed," from the commentator he looked to be one of more assured players out there.

Aker was born and bred Queenslander I'm pretty sure and he's about the most skilful player I've ever seen live.
Had the knockers on his sport choice growing up too.

Nup, born in Mildura.
