If they stay healthy, Sam Mayes will hit 100 games early next year (he's currently on 86) and Lewis Taylor (currently on 75) midway through the year. Harris Andrews will shortly play his 50th (currently on 48).

The experience is coming along.
On the flip side, bar Martin (30) the next youngest is Zorko (28). So there could potentially be a good 3 year period where the only senior player we lose is Martin.

It's amazing how bright the future can look once you start retaining players!

I think the Auskick investment has also changed perceptions. Having by far the best resourced and best run junior football program helps get parents on board.
I don't know how many school visits the club gets the players to do. But it should be 10 times the number that the other clubs do.

If you're fighting the NRL you at least have to be a lot more visible & involved than they are.

If you get the kids interested then us poor parents just have to make it happen.

Agree but I think a lot of that is controlled by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. There's only so much you can ask a player to do.

There has been research which says that people (and especially children) who have participated in a sport are more likely to go to a game and follow that sport. That's why junior participation programs are so important up here and that is also why it is so important that the AFL continue to push the female participation side of things.

I'm not saying club community engagement is not important (it is) but the primary focus has to be on grass roots IMO.

Also, I think that the Lions (and Suns) shouldn't be expected to "fight the NRL". The AFL's job is to take on the other codes. As a club, we've got a role to play but the AFL has to do the bulk of the heavy lifting.

Yep agree, but there's definitely ways to get around the CBA and still be effective. We have AFLW players who I'm sure would enjoy some grass roots employment over the winter. Plus they could get recently retired players involved, they are usually wondering what to do with themselves. And if we can get the AFL to pay for it even better. Let's be honest it wouldnt cost a lot 1 administrative person to organise it & some recognisable faces to show up for a couple hours.

It's amazing how much interest stuff like that can generate. Eddie Betts trains with lockleys amateurs on his week off & it's major news.

Ryan harwood is in the top 14 (86.6%) in the AFL for disposal efficiency (112 disposals), there are only 2 players higher then him with 100 or more disposals, Phil Davis and Lochie Plowman

Edit: very impressed

Don't know which thread this should be in, but what are the chances of the wooden spooners having 2 players (Rockliff & Zorko)make the AA team. I am thinking highly unlikely, but their numbers are comparable to the top mids/ half forwards

Zorko's a lock. His omission would be glaring.

Rocky's shoulder injury blew his chances.
His stats before injury were intimidating: averaging roughly 30 disposals, 6 marks, 8 tackles, 5 inside 50s, 15 contested possessions and 10 clearances a game which is absolutely elite. But he's now missed 3 games and hasn't been at that level since returning. Throw in he's playing in a bottom team and doesn't really have flashy moments or highlights then it's very unlikely he makes it.

Lewis Taylor is in the top 20 AFL players for goal assists and Harris Andrews is in the top 5 for 1%'s. There is no doubt in my mind that this group has improved. If this level of improvement continues our turn around could be quicker then first thought.

He seems to keep most of his kicks shortish. Not a real plus in the backline when we are looking for some penetration but accuracy very handy in the forward line. Think he needs to be persevered with in the forwards to hold the ball in. He will be required to play a specific role not necessarily gather a heap of possessions.

In regards to the type of disposal exiting our back half, long and direct may be more efficient but I am not opposed to short and measured as long as we retain possession which he does

Backs often have anomalously high KEs compared to their skill level due to chipping it uncontested around the back 50 as everyone runs to the other end.

On a positive note: Ryan Bastinac was equal top goal-scorer in the league on the weekend.

I think stats can be extremely deceiving in a lot of situations. My pet hate is when an "under pressure" player handballs to another team mate under just as much pressure but gets a handball stat for doing so. It happens so many times in a game & then at the end of the game people analyse stats & some players rack up these handballs giving the perception he had a reasonable game...PFFFT!

Ryan Lester is the 2nd best kick in the comp this year according to champion data o_O

Would we accept pick 2 from the Hawks (atm) as a straight trade or would we need a sweetener?

edit - just saw the results from last night - make that whoever has pick 2 ...

I assume that stat has prompted a full review of how Champion Data collects stats.

The Hawks traded their pick away to the Saints.

Apparently the stats builds in degree of difficulty and intent as well as outcome.

Even so, doesn't strike you as a guy trying for hard kicks.

Each week a great majority of posters praise Berry and Clugga which goes to show they are improving and playing good footy:thumbsu:
Going well will be happy if one of them can skip 2nd year yannos
