I've been saying for a few years that 5th is easier than 4th. You get 8th first up for the cruisy win and get the momentum flowing then play teams that busted arse to get 3rd/4th but then got beaten up in qualifying finals.
I still think the year we went all out to get 4th hurt us. We had basically nothing left in the tank in finals

I get what you are saying, but before knowing that other stat (no one from 4th) i would still like to have a double chance.
The Dogs 2016 and Lions 2025 are the only teams to have won an AFL GF outside the 8 according to a google search.
Also, only the Giants 2019 and Dogs 2021 have made the Grand Final.
So, the odds of winning a GF are better being top 4.
Fagan likes to tick off things that have not been done before so a win from 4th would be good. Win from 6/8th would be great.

The double chance is good and you wouldnt say no at the free hit at the top seed. But I just think its not worth going all out for. More important to make finals with a fit list timed for finals

I wasn't coping very well on Thursday when we were 0.6 for the 2nd Q .
And to make it worse, Melb were 3.2 before adding another 4.19
... in fine conditions, while the Saints were kicking straight at the other end!

Yes I remember thinking at the time "we've gone way over the top here in our celebrations". We were bound to have an emotional letdown after that. I'd emphasise that I think it was more emotional than physical.
I can't help but think if we were in a similar position now, yes we'd probably have a crack at getting the sufficient percentage boost, but I hardly imagine we'd be shouting from the rooftops if we got it, nor slitting our wrists if we fell short.
