Still got one of the best coaches in league.

Still got the best midfielder in the league.

Nothing has changed much from last season or the year before. We need more quality through the middle. Hopefully Cerra and Brayshaw are that.
Lyon is not one of the best coaches in the league. Simpson, Clarkson, Longmire and Scott all have his measure easily

Whether you want to admit it or not what simpson has done with the eagles this year (and previously) is pretty impressive. His ability to adapt to a situation is quite intuitive.
Hence i always laugh when eagles frothers started calling for his head when things werent looking so good for them.
Interesting most of those coaches mentioned all came from north melbourne.(except cscott).

I wouldnt say(apart from clarko) those coaches have lyons measure easily as all of them have better and more mature squads. Id say they also have (and critically)more experienced and credentialed assisants too

I concur tho Pretty fair assumption to say their currently coaching better atm. Their ability to adapt quicker is probably most notable compared to Ross

Have said it numerous times for a long time now we definitely need some ,i guess more credentialed assisants. Certainly some highly experienced ones would be of benefit too/or as well.
I understand the major issues the club faces in trying to achieve this but its just a reality of the competition were in so we either do something about it or suffer for it

Just like our targeted strategy of recruiting ex wa players i think we have to look for a similar in our assitants...certainly for the experienced ones anyway.

Guys like joel corey,simon black and justin longmuir...darren glass is at hawthorn maybe look to get him back when his contract is up. There are others i just cant think of them atm.
Even somone like dean laidley (ive always rated) could be a good get for the club.

Give a good insight into the goings on of where footballs at and the workings of other clubs in the city where most of the leagues team reside on top of their general footbal nous too.

The only other plausible option is to target recently retired players who are looking to take their next career step into coaching.

We got this (some what luckily )with brett kirk and recently david hale. The eagles got the same with S mitchell.(who despite being an utter flog, i think could end up a very good coach- you look at most of the succesful coaches including his old mentor clarko most had a hard nosed even nasty streak- malthouse,sheedy pagan years past and now hardwick,lyon,beveridge,longmire ,scott twins,even don pyke was an underated tough footballer and obviously clarko himself.

Its why as much as i dislike the bloke i think maybe getting hird could be actually a good tonic and astute move for the club and maybe represent a turn around in fortunes not only for himself but for the club in regards to attracting well credentialed football minds in the future.

Hard to see us having a pick any worse then 5 at this point, a chance we could slip into 4th if things go our way (or against us if you look at it that way).

GCS have 7 games at metricon on the way home including games against Carlton, Brisbane, St Kilda and Essendon.

The Dogs i think are a better team then us so they could potentially win a game or two and end up ahead of us.

We lost a fifty fifty game to North Melbourne in terrible weather. It was only 50 50 because of home ground advantage. The sky is not falling, the rebuild is still on track. People are frothing because they subconsciously dont reapect north. In the prebvious 3 weeks north beat sydney away, lost to tigers by 10 points and beat the giants by 40.

Fremantle bigfooty groupthink has gone cold on Brayshaw but he keeps on keeping on. Weathered a bit of criticism in past games for shirking a contest but took a brave mark in the last where he backed into Ben Brown and got a whack. He was also in the square for the majority of bounces and had his best supercoach score for the year.

Hamling was great in his own right. Its easy to forget he has only played 50 odd games.

Luke Ryan is 22 and has only played 21 games. He has become one our best players and was picked at 66. A real good news story in a lad maturing and turning his life around.

I'm as happy as a pig in the proverbial that Bernie was inducted in the Australian Football Hall of Fame last night! Love the video in this article...

[bump from 12 months ago]

This is my rant. People can debate or criticise what follows, I probably won't contribute. I just need to get it out of my system.

[takes deep breath]

The fact that Barry Hall is inducted into the Hall of Fame and Bernie Naylor is not is an indictment of the Hall of Fame's selection criteria, and of the Hall of Fame itself. Here's some stats comparing the careers of Hall, Naylor & Ron Todd (the latter for purely comparative purposes); two of which were inducted last night:

View attachment 383900

Some comments on the categories:
  • League games - Hall played more seasons (16) than Todd (12) & Naylor (10). Factors include:
    • World War II - Todd enlisted in the RAAF while the VFA was suspended & was ineligible to rejoin Collingwood due to VFL/VFA transfer, Naylor enlisted in the AIF & was posted in Darwin/New Britain,
    • Money - Naylor retired to focus on full time work in order to support his family at the age of 31 (he kicked 133 goals in his final season);
  • State Games - there were more State games in Todd/Naylor's era than Hall's;
  • Australian games - International Rules was established in Hall's era;
  • All Australian selection - different criteria for selection (based on State games vs committee selection).
So the balance of the objective criteria is in Naylor's favour. There's also subjective criteria as described here: "Without limiting clause 5.1, the Committee may consider a candidate's individual record, ability, integrity, sportsmanship and character." I won't speculate on ability apart from saying that the the goals per game & goals per season ratios speak to it. Regarding integrity, sportsmanship & character, I don't know any of the three people personally (I did speak with Barry Hall once on the way to a Freo game at the MCG and he was nice enough to chat about the upcoming game for a couple of minutes) so I can't tell you whether they are good people or not. You can read their online biographies and make your own judgement.

Further eligibility criteria provides one reason I can find that gives Hall an advantage over Naylor:

The Hall of Fame committee can select and enshrine up to six Hall of Fame members each year. Of those, at least two must have retired within 10 years of each induction ceremony. There must be at least one inductee selected from the category of administrator/umpire/media every two years. - (http://www.afl.com.au/news/event-news/hall-of-fame/about)

The other potential reason I can think of is the makeup of the Committee. It states that "At least 25 per cent of the selection committee to reside outside of Victoria". That would be Dennis Cometti (living in WA, which had zero inductees in 2017), Michelangelo Rucci & Bruce McAvaney (living in SA, which had two inductees & 1 legend elevation), as well as Mike Fitzpatrick who is from WA originally but has lived in Melbourne for years now. So 60% of the committee are from Victoria, 70% live there. 4 of the 6 inductees (or 67%) are Victorian. Not saying there's a conscious bias, but it is a potential reason. The committee's knowledge base of the history of Australian football is stronger in what they know most, or recall more fondly. That is what they have seen in the flesh, and that has been in Victoria.

Let me make this clear: I'm not begrudging the induction of Barry Hall (or Ron Todd for that matter) into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. What I'm calling out is that despite the objective comparison of the football careers of Barry Hall and Bernie Naylor being more favourable to Naylor (and arguably the subjective ones as well), Barry Hall has been inducted before Bernie Naylor because of the Australian Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee's biases towards recently retired players of Victorian origin.

That is not how we should be recognising the history of the game nor the players that excelled in playing it. That, in my opinion, is wrong and is crying out for change.

Rant over.

Going to do the reverse today, and add a little optimism.
Youngsters were good. Apeness really competed today against top 3 ruckman in Grundy. Very positive.
Jones, Giro and Apeness all kicked their first of their career/season. Great to see. That last quarter- why don't we just play like that every game? Just open up the game, swap mids up forward. Neale for Mundy, if need help, swap them back. Bring Cerra into the game, had his best today for us.

Cerra had 11 possessions

Brayshaw was much better

Sidebottom absolutely slaughtered Cerra in the second half, looked like Ross gave him a defensive run with role. Clearly a lesson by design, but when you see them side by side it’s apparent how far Cerra has to go.

Our best footy is open footy. The derby, the dogs game, that last quarter v Collingwood - when we open the game up and use the runners we look good

Trouble is with kids, it’s hard to keep up for four quarters. Plus they’re still learning

I’m very glass half full at the moment, yet still very much on the fence. The results and performances have been shocking for the most part. Thankfully there’s always been some positives.

Was really impressed by the attitude of the team, particularly the youngsters towards the end .

Despite the game clearly being over they never truly gave in and where still getting around each other as some of the newbies kicked their first goals.
The spirit was good with leaders Walters Mundy and Fyfe also giving gee ups to youngsters
I think our team/players realises exactly the situation it is and how hard the road ahead is but are prepared to put the hard yards in
