Sean Darcy. That tackle.

As soon as his name was read out, us obsessives checked the phantom drafts and he was no where. Then we watched the videos and saw an overweight kid who (supposedly in hindsight) dominated because he was bigger than the other skinny 17 year old ruckmen he was coming up against. It was an appropriate time for a melt saying we should have picked up another forward (was battle available?).

What we missed was his soft hands. Some rucks have hard hands such as Sandi, lots of tap wins but not much in terms of clean breakaways but Darcy has soft hands and can control the ball. Reminded of Michael Gardiners' soft hands, forgive me, but all in all they nailed that pick.

People overuse and misuse the term a moneyball pick but Darcy is a moneyball pick. Looks ugly, assumptions are made and yet we bought him at a higher price than other teams would have paid and got value.
Just a side point, The Cats were into Darcy as well but we Trumped them. Also, we wanted Stewart and they trumped us.

Going to the game with my son today. Don't get to see Freo live much so it's always a special occasion. It's nice not having to take the in depth knowledge and critical analysis into days like today.

Just going to enjoy the footy with the young fella and give our boys a heap of support and encouragement. Go Freo!

Stay off social media sit back and enjoy the day. I'm sure you'll have fun

Thats the point of following a club, to enjoy. To many on here want to suck out all the fun and enjoyment . They use terms like pandering to mediocrity and drinking the Kool aid if you don't lay crap on all and sundry associated with the club. Enjoy the day with your son and cheer the boys on.:D

Agreed. BTW Positives From the GWS game Griffin Logue is going to be an absolute gun. Brennan Cox has one of the biggest leaps from any young player Ive seen. Luke Ryan superb. Lots to like about the future. Our 2016 draft class looks fantastic.

The kids don't mind travelling. Playing away from home doesn't seem to be a major issue for the club anymore. Of course it will always be a factor but this group seems to do alright on the road.
Something about it, maybe the bonding trip on the plane etc. ?
Won all games in Melbourne - vs Richmond, Melbourne and North. And got close to GWS and Geelong. Impressive really.

Would be great to turn the new Perth Stadium into a 'House of Pain' with this young group. Just like Connolly did in 2002-2006. We win our home games- 11. We re pretty much in the finals with one or two away wins. West coast do that so well, no matter how crap they are in Melbourne, they still win the home games.

Not this year, they now have the ability to lose at home...:straining:

Take your point though. Winning 11-12/12 at the brilliantly named "Perth Stadium" is a great foundation for repeated flag challenges.

Freo may have lost but those young guys you listed had break out games and I'm so proud of what they did today.

Logue was awesome and has had some huge tasks of late.

Luke Ryan gives Freo drive out of the backline. This is something we lack with Spurr in the team. What astute talent spotting at that stage of the draft.

The recruitment team needs to work overtime in the next few years but it's already looking positive

Did you and your children have fun besides the loss?

We've had 3 of the current top 4 on toast at 3 quarter time, and held on against one of them with a team full of kids. That bodes pretty well for the future.

All away games too, makes me wonder if we're no longer suited to playing at Subi with the move imminent.
Dimensions similar to MCG.. don't mind this, perfect warm up for winning the premiership. Get nice and ready for the Grand Final

Fyfe;
While there has been plenty of opinions written about how he is not playing at his best, the AFL Player Ratings currently have him in;
- Team of the year.
- Team of the week.
- Ranked 2nd in the AFL for best form in past 4 games (only Zorko better, who has played just 3 of those 4 but still qualifies).
- Ranked 4th in the AFL for best form in 2017, behind Dangerfield, Martin and Ablett (who has played just 13 games but still qualifies).

I will say that I'm not the biggest fan of the AFL player ratings system, but I have watched Fyfe very carefully in 2017 and believe that he is doing a great deal more work than most people realise and appreciate.
He has big stats in 1%ers and pressure acts for a midfielder.
He also has very good scoring involvement numbers and when looked at more carefully has an extremely impressive involvement percentage in Freo's scores (which more accurately takes in to account the impact of the team on the player, ie. it is much easier for Dangerfield to have a score involvement when Geelong has had 37% more scores than Freo has so far in 2017).
Fyfe is involved in 38% of Freo's scores. Dangerfield 33%, Martin 37%, Zorko 37%, Sloane 33%.
That is up there with the league's premier forwards; Buddy Franklin is 38% and Josh J Kennedy is 40%.
But Fyfe is also averaging 2.9 1%ers per game (vs Dangerfield 0.9 and Martin 1.0). Only Sloane has better 1%ers out of the best midfielders, but his scoring involvements are a fair bit behind Fyfe's.

Anyways, lets just say I'm glad we've got Fyfe and they don't.

Also interesting is that Neale is 8th overall this season (not that I have much trust in the AFL player ratings either). If they really do have the improvement they and we seem to think they still have in them, next year should be exciting.

Notice how Tom Mitchell is no where to be seen in that list. Not that I give that much weight to AFL player ratings

Blakely must be getting close to top 50 too...

Although I'd like to continue with the positivity theme, he still has a way to go. After Neale comes Walters in #71 overall, Mundy @ #78 and SHill @ #151. It's important to take these ratings with a pinch of salt but the general trend I think can at least tell you something. Given the feedback to Neale last season was to have more impact and this season he has done that (even though he was building back from his surgeries for most of the season) is pretty impressive and exciting for Freo. I think guys like Weller and Blakely will become far more consistently impactful next season and start producing higher player ratings averages. Despite all the flak, Fyfe should really be AA and statistically Neale should be just as good a chance as he was last season even though his raw disposal numbers are down. This season he's only 19th for disposals per game but he's 3rd for stoppage clearances per game and 8th for effective disposals per game. He also seems to be more well rounded given him spending time forward and helping out more defensively when he's in the midfield (he's 16th for intercepts per game - across all players).

The thing that is impressing me the most is that he is using his supreme abilities to bring lesser players into the game with his handballs from congested areas. I really feel he is becoming the ultimate team player and a great captain.

I think we saw last night what happens when you have one dominant player in your team that is just purely about getting as much of the ball himself from congestion and trying to break free for the kick more often than not.
