It’s rd1 so let’s not write ourselves off just yet. We did some hard things well and some easy things badly. Our debutants did ok and certainly didn’t shame themselves, out endeavour was good but our skills let us down sometimes. This is a new side that needs to learn how to work as a team. We were beaten easily but not disgracefully. This is a top 4 side we played, cut the players some slack.
Having said that if we are still playing like this by round 5, I will start to lose my shit.

Hey guys. Just wanted to say that I think you've definitely improved and I don't think the scoreboard was truly reflective of how tight the contest was. Freo's pressure was manic and tackling was superb. You guys are in rebuild mode so it'll take some time to get there while some older guys get phased out. I think you'll be one of the teams fighting for 8th spot.

The most exciting thing for me was seeing some signs of the confident, mercurial McCarthy who looked so good in his second year at GWS. Such a natural, skilled player with that ability to make the impossible look easy.
Matera is obviously a player and will absolutely add something to out forward line.
Seeing some skilful kicking out of the back half from Ryan & Wilson (would like to see Wilson take the game on a little more like we know he can but its hard when the ball is coming down so quickly and accurately to have the courage to leave your man and create).
Andy Brayshaw is a player, I'm not so sure about Banfield as I thought his disposal was largely ineffective.
Its nice to focus on some positives & remind myself its only a game.

Not going over the game been done to death now, both for and against ,all I will say it's certainly an emotional game for us invested supporters but always try and default to "it's often not as bad as it seems and often not as good "
Now genuine positives, PEEL flogged EP and youngsters lead the way again (I'm sure our wc mates will downplay it tho but I think it's great insight as to the potential of both lists fwiw)as especially big dix, got seriously good vibes about this guy , even before we drafted him so stoked we actually did this time.
The other positive, while I must refrain from it was big apes performance, please just stay fit and healthy for a year big fella!... if he does at the very least we ll have valuable bargaining chip at the trade table come Years end.

Great to see the pressure being applied by the boys in the first quarter, keeping the play in our half. It was just a shame that they didn't get the reward for the effort. And it must have been so deflating seeing the port boys slot a couple easy goals down the other end.
If we can keep up that pressure, and start building some confidence around goals, then the second half of the season should be pretty exciting.
Port look like the goods this year.

Not sure this belongs here but anyway:

Gold Coast and North played each in storms. Can’t judge them off that but we all pretty much think they’ll be junk.

St Kilda only beat last years wooden spooners by 25 points at home after struggling most of the game. They’ll suck too along with their opposition.

Hawthorn won’t be that great but will be ok. Collingwood losing to them by 34 points could be the equivalent of losing to Port in Adelaide by 50 points at worst.

We were the one of two teams that’ll around the bottom six really tested in the first few days of the season. The other being Carlton who we may be re-rate if their form continues. West Coast have the potential to join the teams above in contention for bottom six but could just as easily by competing for the eight.

Tough start but we’ll be judged on how we sit after the first 4-6weeks of the season - not the first game.

Our stars had an off day. The newbies showed that they will be part of a very good group. The stars from the yesteryear sadly is another year older. Like me, we might still be a star in our minds but our bodies have other ideas. Hopefully, next week we reload and launch ourselves again. Matera and Walters to ruin Johnny Worsfold's Perth trip...

If you get a chance I'd strongly recommend re-watching the first quarter. Apart from our inside 50 entries there was actually a lot to like. I'm feeling a lot better after watching it again. Some of the ball movement coming out of d50 from both Wilson and Ryan was very good. If the rest of our defenders can get it into their hands quicker our players downfield will have more space and therefore more time to deliver i50. I think we can be confident this will only improve once Hamling and other real defenders come back into the side.

We completely dominated play for more than half the quarter. MJ gave a free kick to Watts that we never really got to see why, but the defence held well and then launched a counter attack that deserved a goal. It wasn't until there was about 10 minutes left in the quarter where Wingard got a free (at chb) and I'm pretty sure it was Langdon who just didn't pick up his player on the wing despite having a heap of time to do so. If he had of, their first goal wouldn't have happened because the rest of our team had set up really well. Bradley Hill hit the opposition twice under limited pressure... if he had hit his targets both times we'd be in the clear heading into goal both times. That free against Dixon on Wilson should have also been called play on as Langdon was in a paddock on the wing - another potential goal went begging. Brayshaw's intercept just outside f50 was great and he did exactly what he should have in that instance - kicking to the top of the square in a relatively even contest. Tabs got hands to it, possibly should have held it but more disappointing was having no-one front and square. Inexcusable in that situation as Port had players there, they got the ground ball turned and then had plenty of numbers through the corridor, and Motlop had an easy run on to the ball and goal. And from that moment they were up and about and we started dropping our heads having dominated possession and time in forward half but being 2 goals down.

If just 3 of our players hadn't made really basic errors we could have gone into the first break on top and with momentum. I do feel confidence and momentum is so important in modern football. I don't see why we can't solve some of those really basic mistakes in the coming rounds but more importantly our leaders need to get the team to push through when things aren't quite going our way. If we had of continued how we played that first quarter we'd at least have been a lot more competitive than we were.

Don't let the Victorian media confuse you. Carlton were exceptional for 10 minutes and then largely terrible for the rest of the game. Kicked extraordinarly accurate to score 15.4 of which 4 goals were from encroachment 50s.

They conceded 70 i50s and 36 shots on goal. They are not going as well as everyone seems to think. They were supposed to add the attacking layer on top of their defensive one. Seems to me they just flat out replaced it.

That said, they have some out and out gun young players.

I think our first 10 mins saw the old manic pressure and an all out attack in place.
The problem was we left the door open out the back and Port were able to release the shackles and score easily.
With an ounce of luck we could’ve done a Carlton and got off to a flyer.
Once we lost momentum against a very good side it was impossible to turn the tide.
Big positives: Tabs didn’t allow any marks to be taken against him in our 50 which has often happened in the past and brought the ball to ground or marked everything. He had an angrier look in his eye too which was great to see.

Brandon Matera looks a great pickup. Skills were sound as well as toughness and energy.

Wilson and Ryan weren’t great however, I saw glimpses of what it could look like once our new look backline gels. We need to remember we had a lot of new faces down there.

Brayshaws shimmie when he had his second touch was awesome and, despite him being quiet, that moment got me excited. He reminds me of Cotchin.

Bradley Hill needed a run and won’t play that poorly again.

Happy with a more aggressive ball movement from the backline forward, its just that the forwards didn't hold it in !!!. Add in S. Hill and give B. Hill a clip behind the ears, and that attack will look a lot better.

Start of the season, who knows which teams will be at the top ?. You have a plan for the season, stick to it.

In relation to a player like Fyfe, I watched Eddie Betts play and you could see he was trying all his moves, but they just weren't coming off, pretty much just a split second off from doing magic things.

I felt Fyfe was similar, trying the moves but split seconds off. The efforts there, the results will come.

Oh add Hamling and that will put more iron in the backline.

After the Australian cricket teams amateurish ball tampering act in South Africa being a Freo fan following a good old rogering in Adelaide is quite a pleasant feeling.

If we keep losing like we did against port for the rest of the year. We get this in return. Has to be a positive

WEST Australian and South Australian clubs have put forward a proposal to the AFL for them to gain priority access to the leading indigenous talents from metropolitan zones in their Next Generation Academies.

On a positive note, this would be an amazing thing for our teams.
