Often a much maligned and bypassed genre by people delving into da methulz, afterall the "you are a homosexual for listening to this genre" and "enjoy licking anus" etc stigmas attached thanks to the bare chested, muscle bound, weapon laden members Manowar do not help.

I must admit I have fallen to this mentality a bit but I have always had Blind Guardian's "Nightfall in Middle Earth" in my playlist, it was always pretty epic but finally a few years later I decided delve into the rest of their discography starting with "Somewhere Far Beyond" and the epicness blew me away, I then subsequently downloaded "Imaginations from the Other Side" and blew a few loads after a few tracks, it kept getting better and better.

At this point I cursed myself as to why I have been avoiding this genre for so long and thus the seeds have been sown on virgin soil and we get to the purpose of this thread, does anybody have any must "hear" recommendations?

Of course Ill do the genre due diligence and check out:
-Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I & II
-Land of the Free
-Blast From the Past
-The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: Part Two
-Ample Destruction
-Death of Glory
-Warning of Danger
-Invictus

but this is only a speck in the ocean.

Given the stigma attached making that giant leap of faith in to this genre is not dissimilar to a religious person breaking the shackles of faith and fear of eternal torture in rejecting the existence of deities. Here are some samples which can hopfully help those confused with the step:

also I guess this could fit into the general metal thread but I feel it is too black metal orientated and many posters knowledgable about the power methulz genre do not read it.

I dunno i think there are a few Blind Guardian fans in the general metal thread. Power metal too, but for some reason it isn't discussed much :D

Power Metal is my life. Kai Hansen is god.

Anyone who claims to like metal should LOVE these bands:

GAMMA RAY
BLIND GUARDIAN
EDGUY
LOST HORIZON
HELLOWEEN
AVANTASIA
PRIMAL FEAR
IRON SAVIOR

and I could go on & on! It's mainly picked on by w***er metalheads who only like things that are brutal, and those people piss me off greatly.

I don't really like any of those bands apart from 1 or 2 BG songs. And i love metal =/

Crescent Shield and Slough Feg are probably the only bands that are sort of power-y that i can handle regularly, unless you consider Fates Warning and Helstar to be power metal

from L to R

Tima, Suspense, Dee Snider, Lone Wolf

haha. I would trade places with Joey DeMaio if I were to also receive his impressive talent for bass guitar (and songwriting). Might pass on the photo shoots and clothes though :p

Yeah, Manowar are quite laughable (no less so than the hordes of serious black metal musicians wearing make-up however ;)), even cringeworthy, but there's no denying their talent as musicians, IMO. Into Glory Ride, Hail To England, and Kings of Metal are all classic heavy metal albums I think.

FWIW, here's some rare mid 80's rehearsal footage of Manowar minus their stage persona ;) (albeit, mixed in with some pretty gay stage footage too :D)...

awesome live clip of the epic Battle Hymn - 3 drummers, 3 guitarists (with consecutive solos no less, including finger tapping), 100 piece choir, 6 minute extended outro, smashed drums, windmill guitar playing. doesn't get much more 'heavy metal' (or OTT) than this :D

Any SAVATAGE fans here on bigfooty?

Yep, although don't listen to them much these days - not big into power metal, but used to be a fan of Savatage, Manowar, Helloween and Gamma Ray as a youngster. Still listen to those bands from time to time, but nowhere near as much as I used to.

Some of my favourite Savatage songs...

Pretty big fan of their Streets: A Rock Opera album from 1991, but haven't heard much of their other work. Surprised that they weren't bigger in their prime. As far as late '80s/early '90s hard rock/metal goes, Streets kind of struck a balance between the more raw sound of Guns N' Roses and the more glammy elements that bands like Mötley Cr*e bought to the table.

Would people consider stuff from the early '80s like Dio-era Sabbath, Dio (the band) and Ozzy Osbourne's early solo work to be "power metal", or at least a more bare-bones precursor to it? I'm thinking specifically of great tracks like these:

If so, I love that kind of stuff! It's got a really cheesy kind of sound, but there's just something awesome about it all the same.

I dig slough feg, but I dont really consider them power metal. Looks like I need to check out Helloween sooner rather than later.[/quote]
Helloween = Power metal 101.

Add in the first two Hammerfall albums, mid-era Gamma Ray and a liberal dose of Primal Fear and you have it.

FWIW, greatest Power metal song ever written (even by a non-power metal band)...still to this day head & shoulders above everything else.

I also see Stratovarius put in many top 10-100 power metal lists, yet they cop a equal amount of flak from power metal fans and kvltists alike, whats the deal with this band? are they legit? why such the polarity in opinions.

Download Destiny and Visions (2 best albums) and see for yourself. I love stratovarius.

Also get:

Blind Guardian - Tales from the twilight world (my fav album from BG)

Alkemyst - Through painful lanes (just awesome)

Axxis - Paradise in flames (so god damn catchy)

Ensiferum - Self titled

Wintersun - Self titled

Equilibium - Sagas

Hammerfall - Glory to the brave

Manilla road - The deluge

Queensryche - Operation mindcrime

Seventh Avenue - Terium

Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica

X Japan - Anything!

Obviously heaps of other power metal out there, some much more popular than these, but I've really enjoyed all of these albums and don't think you will be disappointed with any of them! Enjoy!

PS: when you are sick of this shit chuck on some Immolation like a real man.
