Luvin the Hawks' approach, play with verve, like a jazz group. Coach Mitchell is extremely impressive with his player management and positioning.

I'd like to see Freo, Bombers and Suns step up to add a fresh tone to the challengers
Dockers are not contending for a flag while Justin Longmuir is coach

If Hawthorn can get Lewis anywhere near his best leading into finals it's theirs to lose.

Takes the focus off Dear and/or Chol, and with a genuine number 1 target down there, they'd want for nothing.

Brisbane or GWS though for me until we see that. Hawks, Pies, Freo and Geelong the chasing pack after that.

It’s probably the St Kilda game end of the year where they totally faded out, almost inexplicably. Lasting impression in my mind that I wasn’t suprised when the same happened against the Lions
Ok so not so ‘regularly’ as you put it earlier. Just the one time that stuck in your mind.

Cats had just travelled back from WA in a hard slog game against Freo.
They were tired and Saints capitalised.

Cats were cruising against Lions until Holmes got hurt, they went and got Smith so that they don’t rely on Holmes as much through the middle.

I’m not sure we need excuses for the cats to lose this game.

Fact is the saints when they realised they couldn’t make the eight performed really well beating several better credentialed teams.

Every team is entitled to an odd loss.
The bears lost to Collingwood twice last year and the swans lost to Richmondnof all teams.

The cats won 15 that year, and earnt 4th position. A win in the first week gave them a home final against an opposition that wasn’t traditionally great at that venue. They should have won. And would have blitzed the swans the week after.

They have every right to enter 2025 as a top contender for the flag. They lose little of note and add Bailey Smith to their lineup. While their midfield is fragile, Coach Scott has done a great job papering over the cracks here and creating a formidable unit.

Top 4 beckons and from that anything is possible.

This is from left field, but I think Melbourne could surprise a few people this year, if Petracca and Oliver regain and maintain form. Possibly not a premiership, but definitely better than many have tipped.

Look at it this way: Last year, they managed to finish just 2 wins short of the finals.

like 2024, there'll be a big list of teams on a similar number of wins from about 4 to 10 or so.

But before that in 2023, they finished 4th and were a top side for most of the season. And I think many gave forgotten how potent they can be at their best.

Obviously, there's a lot of other things that will need to go right in terms of injuries, older players (the likes of Gawn) not dropping off, and young guys like Van Rooyen, Tholstrup, etc, continuing to develop.

Yeah it's a common thing. A Victorian side travels to WA. Returns to Victoria and are either fatigued or stuffed.

I remember back in 2006, west coast belted Brisbane, west coast wasn't 100 percent.

I got told by one of my eagles mates when the plane made it to Perth airport, some eagles players were vomiting when they got out the plane.

Freo then beaten eagles by 57 points

Hardest trip in footy to do, that’s why I’ll never understand Vic teams complaining. It’s a cakewalk in travel compared to both WA sides who do it every second week.

I was saying more so why Cats ran out of gas, they were up nearly 30 at halftime and they looked completely shot after that whereas Saints looked like a fresh new team.
Think Cats just weathered the storm as much as possible until they couldn’t anymore and a fast finishing Saints put them to the sword….no disrespect at all to the Saints, they finished the year on a fantastic run aside from the Lions game.

Look I had us finishing 5th/6th and out in the first or second week so you’ve got more faith than me I just think people forget how close it was to being a Cats vs Swans grand final.

I expect the cats to win vs Freo in Geelong in this round.

Freo has too many best 23 blokes out. No Walters, Hayden Young, Shai Bolton or Darcy.
Mannagh, Kolo, Bruhn, Martin, Guthrie, Conway for Geelong. Two small forwards, a starting midfielder, best lockdown KPD and a veteran half back/midfielder.

Similar strength sides are lining up, on paper.

4x 2024 AA squad members will be fronting up for Freo, 3 for Geelong.

I don’t think the Hawks need Lewis.
They have the best small forwards in the game which makes it difficult to defend.

Chol is doing his job competing.

Dear provides a something different with his marking ability and agility.

Disagree.

Lewis would be their first picked key forward if all were available.

In saying that, they'd probably only play two of Lewis, Chol and Dear at any one time, but it's not likely to be a decision they'll need to make very often, and if they have to make that decision, it is a nice problem to have.
