Opinion The Primus 26

After 2 draft and trade periods where Ken has been able to influence an then put a stamp on the squad only 26 of the players that comprised the 39 main list players and 6 rookies = 45 Primus had for the 2012 season, remain with the club.

24 players from the main list remain, with Jonas promoted from the rookie to main list and Renouf has gone the other way from main to rookie list. The draft picks are where players were first drafted by Port or other clubs.

If you look at the top sides since 2007 they have 4 to 6 changes a year so at 15 to the main list over 2 years it’s not excessive. Hawthorn had 12 over the 2 drafts in 2011+ 2012. Sydney had 14 over those 2 drafts. Geelong between 2004 and 2012 drafts without rookie elevations, have had 4+5+4+5+4+6+4+6+5 changes to their list.

Since 2007 off our main list we have cut 4+9+8+7+7+9+6 with a few moving down to the rookie list ie Willits, Dawson, Matthew Westhoff and Renouf and a few going the other way up to the main list, Salter, Daniel Stewart, Thompson, Meyer, Hitchcock and Jonas.

Those players we have cut
1.Banner 3rd #42……………………. 12. D. Stewart RE #35
2.Blee 3rd #51………………………… 13. Surjan PSD #10
3.Chaplin 1st #15……………………. 14. Thomas PSD #8

My gut feel is that 3 or 4 of the Primus 26 will be gone at the end of 2014 even if we have agood year and make the top 4 or top 8.

Hitchcock, Newton and Ah Chee have do something in 2014 and renouf will be under pressure and it will depend how his knee injury progresses if he still on the list come December 2014.

The list certainly looks a lot better than it did at the start of 2012. Still some deficiencies in positions, but it doesn't look like spud - good player - spud - good player throughout it anymore. With the turnovers Ken will feel more ownership of the list, but in 2015 onwards it will be at the point he owns the list - for better or worse. So far looking better.

.... After 2 draft and trade periods where Ken has been able to influence and then put a stamp on the squad ....
I don't believe Ken had much influence on our delistings or our draft/trade period last year, he was only appointed in October.

But you could say that of the equivalent group at any club. It would have to be a few more than that not to be just natural attrition. I'm a bit surprised at how few we lost this year if truth be told.
.... renouf will be under pressure ...
Arguably that has passed, his tumbrel is trundling towards the guillotine as we speak. I'd be very surprised if he got another game.

Just as a matter of interest, from 2004 to 2012 inclusive, Geelong have drafted 72 players (including rookies and father/son(4)). 44 of these got a game (61%) and went on to average 38 games with 30 still on their list ie. 42% player retention.
For the same period Port have drafted 85 players (including rookies). 56 of these (66%) played an average of 37 games with 28 still on our list ie. 33% player retention.

Why would Newton, Ah Chee and Hitchcock be any more in the gun than Heath, Stevenson and Cassisi? For mine, all those players are at the crossroads of staying AFL players this year.

By iron, iron itself is sharpened. Ergo, by quality players, quality players are made.

Ken pushed Parker hard to take Wines once they found ouf he was sliding our way. No Ken and Parker picks some skinny flanker kiddie like previous years.

You have to cut at least 3 players unless you promote rookies. Mitchell and Renouf and co pdobably wont be promoted. So the 3 dslistings will 90% or more come from the Primus 26.

In the theoretical situation that all six players had equally good years I'd say Cassisi and one of Heath and Stevenson would be on the way out. Assuming that isn't all six were s**t, then it'd be a case of the first three on the way up as the other three are static or on the way down and it'd make more sense to cut them.

Any player out of contract at the end of 2014 and who are not regularly in the 25 named each week will be vulnerable, except for the first or second year players - excluding those who have come from other clubs and have had a couple of preseasons behind them.

The Primus 44 was cut down to 26, fifteen months after he was sacked. Almost 2 years later - ie I assume no more delistings, the Primus 26 is down to 18 and probably 13 still in the best 22

A much smaller turnover, as those Ken doesn't think suit his style are gone. That and most of our players left were younger. If Butcher can improve his kicking it wouldn't surprise me to see only P. Stewart and Young as the only definites out next year, left from Primus era Port. Lobbe a 50/50 on whether the 2 ruck experiment can work.

The Primus 26 is down to 13 and 5 less than 12 months ago ie Butcher, Carlile, O'Shea, Schulz and Stewart have departed.

That's Parker on his training wheels as he got the head recruiting role after the 2009 draft when Blair Hartley left. When did Cripps finish up as defence coach and go into list management?? October 2010 or October 2011?

This is Geoff Parker's first two years of recruiting. I'm worried about this bloke.

Our drafting since 2012 has been pretty good though apart from busting in the KPF department with Shaw and Harvey.

The footy department spend in 2010-11 would have been abysmal and we were fighting for survival.

Gold Coast and GWS had effectively raided the talent pool so whoever was left with second round picks on were probably barely the equivalent of third rounders.

Hardly fair to point the finger at Parker for those years.

Funny how things start to improve with increased income, footy department spend and the ability to leverage off of the northern academies.

The one thing this board has down to a fine art is blame. If only we were all so perfect in our lives as many of the posters here.

Has our drafting improved since then. I'm not so sure.

Yep the GC and GWS made drafting a lot more difficult but in 2010 the Jacobs pick and going after Simon Phillips as part of the returning of compo pick for Krakouer and the GC's access to 10 state league players really stand out among those 14 who have been cut/left and classic rookie errors. My Norwood mate who is close to Basset, said they just couldnt believe we were interested in Phillips. We could have taken any player in state leagues around Oz including Puopolo and Nick Duigan who were taken in the 60's and 70's respectively in the 2010 draft.
