In this thread will try and show how I think the current culture of the MFC accepting mediocrity is causing the Grand old flag to be seen and used, as an old hessian rag.

The Board - Case in point is the "tanking" debacle, where President Don McLardy came out and said, "We have and will continue to defend the integrity of the MFC in the strongest possible fashion". At the end of the investigation, we were found to have "tanked" and was fined $500K and the board bent over and took it up the arse, instead of fighting it as promised. Taking a look at the club and its playing group is it wrong to assume that the players are just shit and dont know how to win.
Secondly the man at the centre of the debacle, Chris Connolly is made to spend a year in the wilderness because of his comments. It's an absolute disgrace, that a man that has caused this club to be fined $500K due to his ineptitude is allowed to carry on having any sort of role within the organisation. If it was any other business he would have been sent on his way, but not when it comes to the MFC. Not only will he have a job when he's year is up, he is getting paid whilst he is away.

It's time for the board to go. We need some sort of Don Scott styled coup that will see people put in place that wont accept losing. Whether that is getting business people not associated with the club or proud an passionate members would have to be determined.

The CEO - would have to be one of the greatest Snake Oil saleman going around. Bags were packed before 186, yet somehow he managed to survive. For the past 5 years he has been working on things that will help bring us back to our "roots" when he should have been focussing on us being "rooted" as a club. Such great initiatives like, putting a collar on the jumper, getting players into ****y blazers and White Board Wednesdays was all he could come up with to improve and grow the brand of the MFC and make us great again.
Some seem to forget that this cancer of the club is the same man that announced that Junior (a true clubman) was no longer a required player, at the dismay of the previous coaching staff and the same man that was CEO of the club in 1999 when we were fined for salary cap breeches and draft penalties. Please just GTFO.

The Coach - Not sayingNeeld is the right or wrong coach, but the guy clearly does not have the support around him. You only have to look at Hird who I thought had basically the same average list as ours a few years ago, turn it all around to have a very good team. He had absolutely no coaching experience and the Bombers in their wisdom actively sought experienced assistants (Thompson, Wellman and Goodwin) to help him out and develop. Considering this is the probably one of the most important parts of a team, to help the players develop along with recruiting you think the MFC would actively spend some money on it.

The Assistants - (I know I have been banging on about this for a while now) the ones we have at the club are dead set shit. Firstly we have the Midfield coach a guy in his 50's, teaching kids how to play the modern game. It would be like taking advice from your old man on how to he used to play the game and what you should do. In his two stints at our club (and at Tigers and Doggies to an extent), he has done **** all with the development of the players and no improvement. They dont even have a decent structure when they set up on the boundary line.
Next we have Jade Rawlings. Here is a guy who was an average backline player himself that couldnt kick his way out of a paper bag and we have him instructing an area on the field that is constantly getting hammered. Did nothing with the development of players at Richmond and is doing the same now.

If the club wants to get serious about winning, how about they get Neeld some decent, experienced support around him.

The Players- Where do I start and finish. I dont think I have ever seen a side this bad in my life. Absolutely no competitive spirit and if you could have the option you would euthanise half of them. Not worth anything they are being paid.

Former Players - Dont go around offering you opinions on what we can do to make the club better when you are in the position to be actively involved. Yes, Im looking at you hairy Garry. You want to be involved in the decisions of the club, yet when it comes down to the time when the club actually needs you, you back away. Either put up or STFU.

The Members - We are the ones that have stuck through all the shit and turn up to watch the games week in and out. But now is our time to do something. We can either keep going to the games and supporting mediocrity or we can boycott one of the games, so the club will understand we wont tolerate the shit anymore. Its time to take a hardline approach to these bunch of pussy footballers. They get absolutely everything in life handed to them on a platter and give nothing in return.

Until they stop playing like Fuschias and start playing like Demons again, I wont be wasting my Easters and Saturday nights away from home, to go and watch a bunch of soft ***** run around worrying about whether they are going to get a bruise. When you are getting paid thousands of dollars to play a contact sport I expect you to put your bodies on the line and make contact. I dont care if you snap in half by doing so, but at least let the opposition know you are there.

The time to do something about the mediocrity within this club is NOW.

stop playing like Fuschias and start playing like Demons

I seriously want the cheer squad to make that the banner this week. The players shouldn't get the soft, positive reinforcement on the banner they get every week. The first thing the players see when they run onto the ground is that banner and it is the voice of the supporters. There is no better message than a quote that characterised this club so long ago.

Yep, we should drop the Demons moniker for the moment. We do not deserve it.

Fully agree with most of what you've written but it's Royal's competence, not his age, that's the issue. Royal's only 51yo. The most successful coaches over the past 10 years or so are Thompson, Matthews and Malthouse. Thompson will be 50 later this year and I don't think too many people would doubt his competence to coach. Matthews was 50yo when he coached Brisbane to the first of their run of premierships under him and Malthouse will be 60 later this season so he was in his mid to late 50s when he coached Collingwood through its recent successful period. There's no question that former players in their 50s have plenty to offer as coaches and trainers in the modern game. The problem with Royal is that he's doing a lousy job.

Sorry for the intrusion, good post.

I'm a Swans supporter & have lived through the constant floggings of the early 90's, it's the supporters of your club that I feel sorry for. From an outsider looking in, it seems the players aren't close & don't have that digger mentallity of doing it for their mates.

I know nothing about the inner workings of your club, but I agree with you that you need a strong board who doesn't accept what has been dished up on the field. Mark Neald maybe an excellent coach, but if he hasn't got the right people around him, he & the club will fail.

I hope that the MFC get their act together very soon for the supporters sake. Goodluck & go Dees.

Apologies for the intrusion also, but this point above all others I agree with the most. Schwab (Mr Teflon) has his fingerprints over a lot of things at Melbourne and Freo, but nothing ever sticks.
Schwab has a winning percentage of 30.7% with the Dees and a semi respectable 44.3 winning percentage as CEO of the Dockers. In 15 years as a CEO of clubs with questionable cultures, during his tenure as CEO he has a winning percentage of just 37.9%. Culture starts at the top and in my opinion he is the cancer leading it.

Brilliant post Syrus, agree 110% with the entire thing.

Does the MFC have a Constitution? I know they have no constitution at the moment, but I'm talking about the noun, the thing that lays out what the club must do and how it must operate, what rights the members have in particular...

I'd like to know what can legitimitely be done.

Schwab has to go simple as that. get rid of all the assistants how come we didn't go after scarlett or kirk?? our midfield setup is an absolute joke. love how nearly every player we get rid of is better at another club! something seriously wrong with our culture and it has to start at the top cant be coach after coach. yeah how great is it that our club isn't broke anymore?? so i can put up with this shit?? every week fukn up my w/e's. how long until we become the tassie devils?? or gone? if i wasnt a loyal supporter i would of already changed to eagles or dockers.. good write up btw agree with everything

Now i agree with the OP, i fail to see how Schwab and McLardy can be blaimed for not tackling or sticking up for their mates.

The work being done off the ground has been pretty really good. We now have AFL standard training facilities, the logo looks great etc etc.

I feel for you guy's I really do. Port supporters know pain too.

Our darkest moment was losing to GWS last year. however that was the catalyst to some of tje most fundament and positive changes in the clubs AFL history.

that loss was responsible for a new coach, new president, new board and modt importantly new genuine hope.

hopefully your very dark period bears a similar change from thejtop

How good is their off-field work looking now? There's long been talk that Schwab, at least, is divisive and not good for any of the clubs that he's previously been involved with. We need change and why leave that particular stone untuned? Get him out, along with Royal and Rawlings, even if it does add to our financial losses.
