And how should the Queen have "intervened"?

By doing what you keep telling us is the only thing she, or her rep the GG, can do.

Act on the advice of Cabinet.

You've repeatedly said that's all she can do, she has no real power...because bla-bla-bla.
When the time came for her rep to act on the advice of Cabinet, he chose to do his own thing.

It's almost like the Queen and her rep don't have to always follow the advice they are given by Cabinet.
Which raises the question, under what other circumstances can the GG act without following the advice of Cabinet?
Which raises the question, is the GG's power confined to just following advice.

On the evidence, the simple answer is no.

If the sole reason for liking a system of Constitutional Monarchy is the advantages an apolitical wielder of Reserve Powers can bring to the executive process then it shouldn't really matter who wields those reserve powers, as long as they are outside the system of party politics and that they acted on no vested interests.

Why shouldn't the wielder of that power be an Australian?

Those "reserve powers" are extensive/broad/ill defined & subject to abuse by a willing person.

The 90's referendum stalled when they couldn't decide whether the powers vested in the GG would transfer to the new head of state, as is or whether new powers would be created.
Before that issue came up the monarchists were arguing that the monarchy as head of state was just decoration, no real power, why change etc...but when they found out that the proposed constitution would vest the GG's powers, as is, in the new head of state, they screamed blue murder about a person wielding so much power.

Could scrap the whole thing and give the job to a family of Golden Retrievers for the same result.
Except who doesn't love a golden retriever? They're honest, approachable, respectful and trustworthy animals.

I'm looking at a wrinkly 70+ old man in a kilt who wanted to be reincarnated as a tampon, and I'm really struggling to understand why anyone would care what he thinks let alone want him as any part of their government.

Think this interview puts the BS treacle we keep seeing about the Royal Family (espec the fawning over them by the media) into perspective.

Yep. Hound them like hyenas, then turn around and write gushing tributes to 'er Maj and brand anyone that says a bad word against her at this time a tasteless scumbag.

I think this time will be very interesting to look back on in a couple of years.

Near impossible. It is the task ahead for our nation to work it out.
As much as some seem to want to run away from a politician holding those powers, if they have to exist it may as well be powers held by a politician accountable to the people.

As much as it makes for a good meme, who says we're getting a vote either way?

The whole royal family is like kids playing dress ups. It’s laughable this is still happening in 2022.
It's all the result of hundreds and hundreds of years of entitled people killing, torturing, and stealing to get their family to the top of the English hierarchy.

They need to throw this barbaric system away.

All aristocratic property returned to the people for the common good.

It’s laughable. She’s proclaimed as some hero because her whole life was one of extreme privilege.

They have no role in society anymore.

I have. Underwhelming.

Read 'The truth of the Palace Letters' by Kelly and Bramston. They're fairly scathing of Jenny Hocking's claims of Palace involvement calling them "revisionist history without evidence." Hocking is of course on the national committee of the Australian Republican Movement and has a clear agenda.

Just need to have science more forward to re-create a clone of Don Chipp and he can be our keeper as head of state forever more.
Keep the bastards honest.

What we do not want is some ****ed up system like the Yanks have.
No president.
Just need a watchdog only.

I forgot there was some guy in Australia that apparently descendant of a line that would have had the throne their way if a mistake in past was not made centuries back.
I not know when this doco made but it funny the response by the man himself.

Kelly is also the author of nine books on Australian politics and history. He was actually at Parliament House in Canberra on the day of the Dismissal and has written extensively on the Dismissal, most recently in 2015.

His co-author on 'The Palace Letters' Troy Bramston has written books on Paul Keating, Robert Menzies, and on the Rudd-Gillard era. He's also interviewed most of the key players in the Dismissal and has made a number of significant archival discoveries about the event.
