The majority of our losses have come off 6 day breaks but apparently that's irrelevant and just an excuse on this board.

We have at least three more games coming off 6 day breaks - Hawthorn, Carlton and Adelaide. Just a head's up, we will lose all three.

There never was a shinboner spirit. You can't kill something that doesn't ******* exist.

I'm so sick of that ******* bullshit!
The "shinboner spirit" pretty much meant that in the 90s we were tough as nails and not a bunch of pussies - our current team is vagina concentrated.

No but that's what it's referring too - busting skulls and winning premierships even though we were poor as ****.
It is a media creation.

There is a spirit that lives in the club but it is not some voodoo that makes us win games.

In the 90's we also had a bloke that is widely considered one of the greatest of all time. That probably helped us win a few games here and there.

Oh well where is that spirit now? I haven't seen any of it for a couple of years now

I'll explain it how it was explained to me by a old timer NM past player. The opposition always expected a hard fought game and never give in attitude from the NM players.

We aren't good enough. (Devington. ..Smoky for the flag? ?? There is some smoke, but only from what you're choofing)

But in all likelihood we're going to finish 7-10 for the 6th time in 7 years. Football purgatory. A culture of mediocrity has developed. Near enough is looked upon as being promising. Near enough should be a fail. Leadership on and off the ground appears wishy washy. No one appears to have a steely eyed intensity. Even trying to come back last night looked to be a drowning man flailing hisarms around rather than setting his mind to swimming to shore. And to continue the analogy, Brisbane aren't a massive rip. Players who aren't that good, aren't that smart don't work hard enough and allow themselves to be pushed around. And they front up the next week, go okay so the pressure goes off and they stink it up again. Inconsistency because the standards are too low or not followed through by those who set them - a common theme in any organisation who are under performing and with a poor culture.

The bottom line is we're screwed. This group won't challenge for a flag. Changing a culture that has gone off the rails is hard and takes a long time. Ask Richmond (not that we've hit their depths). Would changing coaches help? Probably. But his moderate performances were rewarded with a needless juicy contract so that isn't happening. Do we want to rebuild? I doubt it. Or do we stay where we are - flailing around in the water whilst Gold Coast and GWS go flying past in a big shiny speed boat?
Spot on again boss. This year has been the Year of Realisation. The realisation that this group won't make top 4, and therefore won't compete for a flag.

Exactly why it has carried over to the present day(until recently. ie Bon)

Still, the club recognizes the spirit even though you dont, unless you are a better clubman than Ron Joseph and the like. Champ.

it's got nothing to do with this magical 'shinboner spirit', it's got nothing to do with lack of talent, i suspect it has everything to do with how it seems like nobody is breathing down anyone's neck, from the board on down.

there are lots of attributes about the club i don't agree with at the moment - the media policy, the management of expectations, whatever the hell our selection policy is, the rudderless way a complacent attitude infests its way into the playing group after a big win - completely manageable problems, and ones any competitive organisation faces.

time to light a fire somewhere - i don't care where. audit the players. audit the monday meetings. audit the coaching principles and procedures. audit the organisational chart. audit the boards relationship with its subordinates. set some KPIs. doesn't matter if they meet them or not - get the entire organisation in the habit of needing (or even better: wanting) to constantly improve.

Audit the capital letters policy! (But yeah. I agree with every word you said)

Why are we inconsistent?

I initially blamed fluctuations in effort. And that may in fact be the case. If this is so, the players should be ashamed of themselves and questions need to be asked of BS who gifts game after game to under-performing guys who for years have given us one good game a month.

But lately I'm starting to wonder if our inconsistency is related to a lack of ability? I know that's a tough pill to swallow because there is no easy fix for that. But Maybe our list has been way over-rated and a lot of the guys simply don't have the natural talent to play 3 good games a month. And this would be a MAJOR problem as the club seems hell-bent on rewarding mediocrity with 2 year contracts.

The one fact remains that this group in its current format, is not a top 4 contender which means we can't win the flag. To make top 4, we must string wins together, and for whatever reason, we simply cannot.

Is it as simple as axing the coach? Who knows? The fact the club re-signed him til the end of 2016 doesn't help. Would BS be on thin ice if this was his last year of his contract? Maybe.
I'm no closer to answering this.

Why don't you post after wins? Brisbane beat us you start about 3 threads, bump a couple and post your arse off. We beat Hawthorn you start a thread about the weather in Hobart.

Not one positive comment about the win.

Positive our players were switched on for the Hawks game and it was a really good win.

The other games are our actual baseline. It is the same slow, dumb footballers who are exposed by a bottom 6 team having a decent work rate and a fair dinkum crack that particular week.

The fact is that our group does not have any gears. Not even to take care of bottom 6 teams.

Our group plays well when they are motivated.

Our team moves like they are in quicksand every other week and spread and run from behind and to the side of the ball carrier is rubbish.

Maybe the best thing fir our list is to miss the finals , I can't see us beating Geelong , we play Adelaide spuds into form and I wouldn't pencil the Bulldogs in for a win because they seem to be trying harder than us

We lack any kind of class in the middle, the class players are the ones that give you the scoring power in less defensive games, if our defensive pressure isn't up there, and it is exceptionally hard to maintain every week, we lack the firepower to put away teams in a less defensive encounter.

We have seen the reanimation of the Laidley plodder midfield from hell, not since the halcyon days of Power, Piccioane, Firrito, Simpson and Rawlings days have we seen a bigger collection of one paced plodders who do not run and carry, have no pace, no acceleration, flat footed stoppage workhorses who once get the ball bang it to boot to nobody in particular or turn it over with skill error.

Greenwood, Cunnington, Swallow, Jacobs, Bastinac, Gibson, Adams. That is the nightmare scenario. Throw in Ziebell when he has a full game.

Greenwood 22 disposals, Swallow 25 disposals, Cunnington 13 disposals, Jacobs 13 disposals, Gibson 17 disposals, Bastinac 12 disposals, Adams 8 disposals. Other than Greenwood and Swallow, the others were exceptionally poor.

We are a team with no outside mids and it is painful to watch and we keep recruiting the same type of players.
