Generally speaking, how many lights (halogen) should you be able to wire up to the one circuit before overloading and tripping of the circuit breaker could be a potential problem?
Downlights or spot lights ?
and why not go LED and then it changes everything

I don't think this makes a difference if they are both using halogen globes, they only differ in the way they are fitted to the ceiling.

I'm neither building a house nor replacing lights. Wouldn't use LEDs if I was. Too bright, no character.

Halogen is used in spot lights with high wattage
Im assuming you only mean downlights

I cant see much character difference with led and Halogen
Ive replaced all my down lights to LED
Both can be very bright and white

I aim for 2 to 3 but will happily eat all if timing goes wrong
I aim 4 to 5 but eat anything upto a 5 if Im hungry and the poached eggs are perfect and ready
A B or C are fine depending on what I feel like on the day if its coffee
A if its tea
