Because the Olympics are a massive money spinner which the IOC only grants a country if they can guarantee the athletes safety.
Also, the druggies are more widely spread in the general community unlike the Olympic Village.
Plus, the olympics are awesome and derserve protecting, lots of members of the public are plebs.

As for MY question....how come flights are so much cheaper on Christmas Day going TO Melbourne as opposed to the Sunday/Monday going FROM Melbourne? (I know it wasn't such a problem for me, I had plenty of points but still)
