Its never seemed that straightforward to me and i dont think too many others see it that way either.

The reality for most (and i include myself) is we have very little idea of the history and disputed borders but Russia seem to be the aggresor and took the first overt military action, hard to really argue for them at that point.

I also assume basically all of Eastern Europe is pretty sketchy.

No disputed borders to speak of, just around 300 years of Russia wanting more than it can hold really.

Small snapshot, back in Empire days Russia fought the Swedes and Poland a lot, used to get owned by both also, especially the Swedes, around WW1 days those empires are long past and Russia enter into agreement territory with the west to do well, this is what birthed the USSR for WW2 since between 1 and 2, Russia went 'I'm going to annex my neighbour" and literally invaded everyone around them. USSR then enters the chat for WW2, that last until around the same time of the Korean & Vietnamese wars, then it collapses under its own weight since USSR never had enough on its own to command such a nation, it was entirely reliant on the western support. So what does Russia do at this point?

If you guessed beat up on its neighbours like it was the 1500's again, you are spot on. Only now it's the 1990's so EAD Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Chechnya, big boi Russia is here to stick a boot in. That's the predlude to enter Ukraine, yet another previous member they once had under their boot with "they be nazi, we be good guys beating up on nazi, trust us" as if this wasn't history repeating.

So they annex Crimea, walk in displace residents, add their own and "it's Russian now" we're now in 2014. Covid delayed Russia acting sooner, but the very minute they thought they could, they're regaining the USSR territory because they liked that period, they won more than literally any other period in their history outside of that great guy, let's do that.

They are the agressor, their problem is that they still think they're an empire and this isn't the digital age, so any of that eastern bloc shooting first and asking questions later is legit in my book when it comes to Russia saying hello. IDGF where their military hardware came from or what image is adorned on it, if someone comes into your land and you don't want them there and they have previously sat there for decades and went "mine", you have every right to grab a Japanese knife step into some USA boots adorned in a Korean shirt and stab them when they come a second time all "mine now".

As an aside, the more this war continues, the more I think the special military action is Russia trying to annex Wagner by using Ukraine to do it and they're just in the back end all "I want this land and this washer and this cupboard... oh hey a kid...".

Russia and most of Eastern Europe have an issue with skin head nationalists and nazis. Even our defence force has been infiltrated by them. Only to Russia this isn't war, it's a special military action, and they're not conscripting, they're giving their citizens the opportunity to spend some time in the military where all they will be doing is repairing a car, or getting a pardon for petty crime like singing in a church (I know right?) and you will definitely never see any action outside of Russia especially Ukraine.

And then in about a week they ship you to the frontlines in Ukraine, often without even giving you a gun or even water in a canteen.

At least with Eastern European operations, when you enter another country, or in the case of most anyway, when you look at your president or representative and go "I really want to stab that person, many times, and blow up that building" and encounter "nou" on the attempt, it's bleedingly obvious of the why's and hows since it's only like 47 people and their dog so everyone knows about it well in advance to call it a war, civil or not.

Twas originally a Buddhist symbol the old swastika I believe.

Only a few months back I saw a Japanese tourist in fed square wearing a short sleeve button up shirt/kaftan style get up covered in them. Pretty confronting I have to say.

I thought it was a Hindu symbol. We see a bit of it in Fiji deployed in it's original context.

Seems it might be both, I was 99% sure it was Buddhist from a few trips to Japan.

In the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, swastika means "well-being". The symbol has been used by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains for millennia and is commonly assumed to be an Indian sign.
