Elon's tunnels are genuinely hilarious.

It's literally just Tesla's on underground roads which will apparently not suffer from traffic because Elon said so.

The positive thing is that his tunnels are the same diameter as as the London underground so when they inevitably fall into public hands they can at least be used for something useful by sticking trains in them.

I don’t think you’re looking at this the right way. What they’re trying to do is increase the speed of building tunnels, which is incredibly slow.

In those tunnels, the goal is to have cars (electric cars) drive at speeds 200km’s+ to quickly get to the destination.

Complaining about it in its current state is a bit like asking what the point is of building an airplane if it can only fly 30 meters.

Just. Build. Trains.

It's just another fad to replace trains as a form of mass transit - this time by a car manufacturer.

It'll never get anywhere like all the other train replacement fads.

The tunnelling stuff is the only interesting bit - but like, who in the tunnel boring industry isn't trying to do that already you know?

Power to him though, if he makes tunnelling faster that'll be big benefit.

A lot of electric vehicle concepts involve self drive cars that will come to your door when you hit an ap on your phone. Perhaps it works with that better.

That's my major gripe with this stuff really. Because that certainly might be true - but it also might not be.

Companies like 'The Boring Company' and others like it use this line to undermine investment in public transport infrastructure. The whole 'why invest in trains today when you might have super efficient self driving cars tomorrow'?

And then its 20 years later and the roads are ****ed because you have no public transport infrastructure and your smart cars (or whatever was promised) never came.

It’s not to replace trains, it’s to reduce cars on the road and get people moving around cities faster.

But anyway. Elon bad.

It sort of makes sense with electric cars, the inner city doesn't have enough room for everyone to charge them and having everyone own a car seems to be insane. You could stop ownership as a stats system for a start and wouldn't need a new model every couple of years. Public Transport will always have a place IMO.

Oh yeah, not owning my own car and just being able to order one is incredibly appealing to me, its just so far away from ever being applicable though.

And yes, mass public transit aint going anywhere ever.

Can you imagine walking out of the MCG to a sea of people ordering their self-driving car to come pick them up? Richmond station is bad enough but at least a train moves a shed load of people out of there every time one arrives.

Indeed and I agree but I will never forget leaving the MCG on Grand Final day in 1997 15 minutes before the siren when the writing was on the wall to get a Frankston train and get out of there, only to find the damn train waited there for the crowd to rock up after the game and to be surrounded by Crow's supporters singing their bloody song all the way to Cheltenham. Oh well, at least I had a seat.

:tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy: Why are you taking me not like Elon's Tunnels personally?

I even said 'power to him' at the end of my comment!

But anyway. Elon genius. :tearsofjoy:
But how many people can this mythical 200kmh tunnel can carry.

The N700 Shinkansen can have 1323 people on a 16 car train.

You probably put out more emissions from building tunnels than you save from electric cars.
Tunnels probably work better for that stupid, "self driving car" idea.

Newsflash....the reason all of our roads aren't amazing....is money.

We do NOT need a 2 tonne vehicle to drive each person around.
Electric or petrol, we are using the amount of energy to move two tonnes.

I lost my license some time back, and for three months in the dead of winter i rode an electric bike 40km a day.
It was a bit much to be honest.

But riding a bike to work one day last week in summer was pretty damn pleasant, and i saved 20% of my weekly fuel bill and put out 20% less CO2.

I'm hoping to get to the point where i'm happily doing it 2 or 3 times a week.

Seriously its no different to ordering an Uber.
Won't be cheaper, won't be more available.

Tunnels are good, when the roads get full we can have roads which are tunnels. Jesus even the Liberal Party Victoria were onto that one.
Trouble is they cost a lot.
Tunnels probably suit the self driving car concept, because you can control the whole thing, roads and intersections can be built like a big electronic railway track, using communications to keep things smooth.
Much easier than trying to use the jumble of roads we have up top.

Buying my 2nd property tomorrow. Got the place here in Armadale and about to get myself a nice little apartment in Athens. We have a family home in our village about an hour away from Kalamata but it's a pain in the ass if I want to travel around Europe from that point because it's about a 6 hour drive to Athens.

Couldn't believe how cheap some of the places are over there. There's some going for as low as $45,000 AUD. Those are pretty dilapidated but it just shows you how little you can pay for property. It's just insane. I'm chuffed though, always wanted a place in Europe to make it easier for me to get around. I've got family in Kalamata & Athens so the ones in Athens can keep tabs on it for me if need be. Was also looking at some places in Middlesbrough where my other side of the family are from but the difference in price is extraordinary.

Got a real estate site in English George? I'd do that. I nearly bought a place in Verona during lock down but it was a renovators delight and still 200k. It was nice though, it was a big barn thing that you could make look like a total w***ers pad close to the centre of the city. I found a place in Spain cheap but realised that it was in the middle of their version of Moe 2 hours from the nearest city.

I know realestate.com.au have an international version that lists properties, I had the help of my family with some estate agents over there directly though. Couldn't believe how much some of the apartments in the city were. My mate bought a newly built apartment in Georgia (the country) during lockdown last year. Holiday homes overseas I reckon are great ideas. Especially somewhere like Europe where you can hop around pretty quick.

Hello old friends on the other side of the world. I haven't posted in quite a while. In truth 2021 has been a very tough year and I've had several bereavements to deal with. Hope you're well and looking forward to the 2022 season. Wishing you all a very merry Christmas from Pomland.
