i'm still shocked that at the end of 2013 someone would ask the following about a colleagues wife "is she also a <insert racial slur>" and worse than that, nothing was done about it!!!!!

its 2013 not 1973!

that'd get you sacked from just about any workplace in 2013, but at hawthorn they just let it go.

its absolutely shocking stuff.
Who said that?

hawthorn under a fair bit of pressure. old sniper lewis was welling up on AFL360 talking about the racist bullshit cyril had to put up with. outside of the hurt it caused cyril and his wife, the worst part about it is the senior player who made the comment is still playing at the club!!!!
Can only be one of three then

Who said that?

its been confirmed by Sam Mitchell the current senior coach that the remark in question actually happened, which is just bewildering.

but no one is naming names. the closest we got was caro confirming she hasn't named names because the player who said it is still at the club!

i think there's 5 if you count the guys who arrived in that off-season. reading up more it appears the player the comment was directed to wasn't cyril but he was the one who raised an issue with it:

"She recounts an incident on an end-of-season trip in 2013 when a senior player asked teammates whether the partner of one of his Indigenous teammates was “also a b***g”. The Indigenous player was at the table at the time. “Cyril found out about it, and was very upset,” said Shannyn, who added that when the issue went to some senior players they told him to ignore it and just said: ‘Don’t worry about it’."

according to the hawks board, caro said on 3aw that:
  • the senior player in question is still at the club (not necessarily playing)
  • the indigenous player is still playing (hawks supporters said it's another club)

its an incredibly short list to work out who was who.

i'd love to find the caro 3aw audio to confirm the hawks supporters views.

either way its incredibly upsetting for the player it was directed to, his partner/family and also the other players/families/supporters at the club.

Between the Tex Walker thing and this it’s deplorable that teammates/players can still play with or be surrounded by people who say this kind of shit. I can only hope that all of St Kilda’s work to have a good inclusive culture for the indigenous players is legit. Surely with the likes of Brad Hill, Paddy Ryder and Gresh as senior players it would be a good place to be

well i am not that shocked, i still occasionally get anti-semitic comments at work and i work for government. Someone on Microsoft teams only last year told of the comment that was racist. the guy said he didn't say anything. i piped up and said he should've, as that is being complicit, he agreed.

Looking back at how the club responded to the Robert Muir article in 2020 in comparison to how Collingwood and Hawthorn have handled similar situations, I think it shows we have taken a huge step forward with acknowledging our failures of the past and are actively trying to be better moving forward.

Many criticise Finnis for being too PC but having someone as socially responsible and genuine about inclusivity as Finnis be CEO has been amazing for the club and I hope the change of CEO doesnt change that moving forward.

Here’s one to test our individual thoughts on inclusivity.

Every Saints jersey from here on until the end of time should have Indigenous patterning on it.

I don’t know, it sort of lessens it a bit. It should have meaning. The Winmar image is one that should be celebrated for its moment in history but just putting up a permanent indigenous jumper for the sake of it could look like tokenism. Maybe for games against The Pies?

Have you looked up domestic violence stats lately? Now that is a far worse problem and it involves footballers and it involves vicious assaults and murder. Hang your hat on that and make a stand.
Racism is too easy for people to jump on a bandwagon. Every year something comes out of the closet regarding verbal racism in clubs and IMO it will continue to do so.
Saints are on the right foot with the employment of Amon and it will make a difference.

A silhouette of the Winmar pose, ala the Jerry West NBA logo, on our jumpers would be brilliant.

The discussion about Bevo's favorite journalist getting busted because of his misogynistic comments was an eye opener.
A lot of people seemed to think that it was OK to behave like that in his personal life, and that the bad thing was his so called mate leaking it into the public arena.
Do people have the same opinion regarding racism? that its OK in private? Because to me that's totally hypocritical.

Why?
What on the current jersey is unrepresentative to any part of society? Or rather, what part of the guernsey is only for some in society?

The colors and shield are for the team. The sponsors are for money. I don’t see why we need a permanent representation of a small section of society.

People can say what they like in private. They may have personal thoughts about people or issues that they dont want made public or they may be with a group of people who think the same way. If you are recorded saying certain things and it gets in the public domain that's when you are in trouble.

Tokenism to me is displaying something one or two times a year.

Happy for us all to have a differing opinion on these subjects.

I really just wanted to point out that discussions about inclusivity are easier when the subject matter is ‘those other guys over there’. But once it’s closer to the things our heart holds dear we start to get a little less forthright in what the right pathway forward is.

It’s a tough subject.

The original owners of the land that Australia, and our football grounds were built upon are a bit different from other "small sections of society". It's not like it was suggested we put a Freemason's symbol on the guernsey.

I’m not hanging my hat on anything here Bill.

I just asked you to perform a mental exercise that hopefully stimulates some thought on inclusivity.

Domestic violence is a scourge, just like racism, and we should all be working towards reducing both.

Yes , you certainly did stimulate thought and well done. Always a good discussion point for sure. I would like the club ( and us) to stay ahead of the pack. We have a pretty big audience out there and with King exciting crowds that audience will only get bigger. Not sure about the racism jumper for eternity but it could be swapped around to focus on the other scourge we spoke about. People like it when large organisations step out of the pack and do something good in society.

The criticism of Tom Morris was that he 'outed' the female journalist by telling people she was gay when she hasn't made that public. The issue wasn't misogyny.

Speak for yourself mate.. if you don't have a problem with the mysogny and objectification of a colleague in that way, you're maybe showing more of yourself than you know.
Both things were very, very ordinary.
