So car jackings, stabbings and violent home invasions were a nightly event in Melbourne 5 or 10 years ago? Our population was over 5 million then! This has nothing to do with population size and everything to do with the ideology of the hard left that has been imposed on Victoria for the better part of the past 25 years. It has its origins in the completely unnecessary state level Charter of Human Rights introduced by showboating AG Rob Hulls. The soft on crime mindset that everyone should be rehabilitated and suffer no punitive penalty for their crimes, has now descended into a revolving door farce with zero consequences for recalcitrant young offenders, re-offending, whilst on bail, dozens and dozens of times.

Odds on those responsible last night were already out on bail !!!

Tough on crime has never been shown to have much of a result. It costs about $2 million a year to house a juvenile in the private prison system. How would you fix it? Punitive punish feels good but it doesn't fix much. An idolisation of crime culture, social inequality, kids believing that there isn't much of a future are all more to blame than politicians. Losing it at a few decision makers for what probably takes 20 plus years of societal erosion is not really a solution.

You could potentially cut immigration to slow the social issues associated with poverty and isolation but then the economy probably goes backwards which also contributes. No-one fixes it because there isn't an easy fix.

Except Councils are bad at it.
There are cases of corruption and they pretty much do what developers want.

There are cases where the council don't meet the government agenda.
One example is granny flats.
Family want their elderly relative living in the back yard.
Government want them there too, it costs less than subsidising them in a care facility.
Granny probably wants it too.

Council say.....Nahhh, because they like to say Nahhhh, can i build a gazebo , Naahhhhh, how about a .....Nahhhhhh.
Seriously they are pretty stupid , in Casey they banned flying kites in public places, it started off with kids getting model airplane fuel on a cricket pitch and somehow ended up with kites.
Meanwhile the mayor collected a stash of cash and shot off overseas.

Anyway the government brought out a standing rule where the council have to allow granny flats, but they are still really restrictive about where you can place them.

It confounds me that places like Warragul, which is a bloody commute and a half through paddocks , from the city , fetches really high land prices. It can only be because the council and developers collude to keep the prices high.

Casey is a renowned shit show but generally decisions locally should be made by locals. Most end up at VCAT anyway because councils are too piss weak to deal with shit.

Places like Warragul are easy to get permits and have councils ready to make quick decisions to get rates money. Casey is trying to balance an already busting open stretched urban sprawl. Warragul is just 10 years behind where they are.

G’day folks
Asking for a friend of mine who’s from England and has for some reason decided to barrack for the mighty saints.
Wants to know which is a good pro st Kilda pub to watch the games at.
Cheers

What area are they in?

when farmland is 10 hectares for $800 000 in the area its hard to accept that residential land should be $300 000.
It doesn't , or shouldn't cost that much to make roads and sewerage.
So what pushes the price up?
They must be controlling how much land is developed.

By contrast.

The father in law subdivided land in Lysterfield and it was super expensive for all the compliance. Paid for everything from asphalt, curbing, extensions to power, water, drainage and even street scaping. Then all the legals and capital gains. Lawyers, surveyors, urban planning, reports etc add cost. You give a lot to make a lot.

Cost something like $1.2 million to divide up 10 blocks nearly 10 years ago. Would probably be double now. You borrow for all that, pay interest and probably had that tied up for 2 years before he got any return.

On top of probably borrowing to buy the land if you are a developer.

In st kilda

If you just want a shithole pub something like the Inkerman Hotel. I haven't been for a few years but pretty decent crowd for the footy a few years back. Balaclava hotel similar. Both just cheap pubs, bit less atmosphere at the BH but has tables and big screens.

If he wan't more of a locals experience the old St Kilda Bowls club is now the St Kilda sports club. You'd have to call ahead to check it's showing but it's a nice spot and super cheap drinks. Last if the old St Kilda.

A lot of people watch at home these days so watching together at a pub is less common. Any of the cheap back packer pubs like Hotel Barkly will show it too. Just ring ahead and check the telecast is on. Most will put it on for you if it's not though.

Who said anything about feeling good? And I would like to see something substantiating the $2m per year claim!

Shock horror - putting people away for their crimes actually prevents them from committing more crimes!! Hard to invade another house in the middle of the night from inside a cell.

And guess what - if there is the very real threat of doing time, that actually acts as a potential deterrent to some other little arsewipe that was contemplating joining the fun! Not as much of a lark if you could end up inside for 12 months as Bubba's plaything!

Take a leaf out of the Singapore playbook and introduce the cane and mandatory gaol sentences for home invasions.

Studies don't show that it works. Also committing kids to early incarceration often ends up in a lifetime of crime and mental health issues. If it was as easy as journalists made out we'd have no issues.

Perhaps some kind of youth life skills camps or something where they are forced to learn self sufficiency or put them into some kind of skills intervention to help redeploy them.

It needs some original thought more than locking them all up. Some are too risky to let out and they probably need it but should still be for the worst cases.

It's societal in parts of Asia where crime is frowned upon. Harder in an ex penal colony. Singapore is quite socialist with easy access to buying a home and a lot of wealth which helps. As much as people hate muslims their religion frowns on crime too.

I met her recently

Disliked her immensely. So did my Son.

She's certainly not inspiring. If she gets up it's a real indictment on the Libs. The Labor party look tired and out on its feet.

Maybe something along those lines. Not fond of the military model but something that is more mentor based that teaches self discipline.

People need to go work on farms for work experience things in schooling, it teaches so much when you have to rely on an essential clockwork system where you can't rely on a 7/11 around the corner for your fix and the noises of generators all night as they kick over so you have hot water.

I consider myself lucky to have that in the fam to say have a talk when you are stuck in a dust storm and can't see your hand in front of your face. I'll admit I cried, that stuff is harrowing when young, but it also hardens you TF up that everything can be fine one moment and the next you are seemingly isolated, unable to see or hear anything but the dust smacking you constantly so you need wits about you no matter what, you need to remember to breathe, remember to centre yourself that you do know where you are, you do know what is around, you know a great many things, you just think you don't cause you're panicking.

Not saying everyone needs to straight get PTSD, but farm life gives you so so much when young, you grow oh so much and it often comes with safety around guns in rifles for "nuisance" animals depending on what is on the farm.

Only if we can electrocute them as well.

Or, a 4x4 room with P66, Gringo and Joffa all talking at once, you lose (die) if you leave in under 3 minutes

NGL, I'd nap, as you never said that they were talking at you, just talking in general.

Easy mode.

They know no other way than talking at 😎

I was in an aisle seat on a long haul from here to Manchester England, I had the eye mask at night to 'do not disturb for anything" essentially; I had a steward ask how I could nap for that long with what was going on around me, the smell of food and such, I said "eh, no biggie, I'm used to it" and we moved on.

I can drown out nonsense quite easily cause I meditate and have done so for an age. All about that mental zone where nothing else matters but the sound of your own breathing. The world can be going on around you but if you are in the zone, you are in that zone.

With this cost of living crisis, I have embarked on an economy drive and only wear one sock.

I must be the greatest budgeter to exist as I never wore socks today as CBF and I have sandals for when I go outside.

We should run the BMF - BigFooty Monies Fund.
