Perhaps it needs to come to a head.

Someone shot a guy who talks to the people who disagree with his views. He gives them a platform to speak, and responds to them.
There should be way more of that in society, instead of what we've got. Flinging shit over social media, without any listening to the other side.

Some of the comments celebrating his death are pure evil.

And I wouldn't recommend watching the video, maybe I'm just getting old, but this one seemed particularly violent.

What you can never stop is a rogue individual though, there’s always going to be people out there willing to go down the absolute worst path.

You think how many of these debates Charlie Kirk has been to, always riling up half the crowd, yet it takes one individual to do the damage. Whilst there will be pure evil online that celebrate this type of killing, 99.99% of them would never commit the act.

Really sad for Charlie’s family, his kids will always have the vision of their father being murdered.

How many Americans have been randomly killed this year? It's only a thing for conservatives because attractive blonde woman killed by scary black man.

For everyone else, it's just another random act of violence. Terrible, but if you're going to spend time thinking about every American murder, you won't have much free time.

As for today's events, they're unfortunate. We don't want people killing people for their views.

It's important that we don't feel sad about it though, his death is just part of a fair trade for their gun rights.

People keep parroting this line of thought. And I’ve never really listened to him talk, but I reckon the point he makes would be that his death to a gun shouldn’t alter the gun laws in America. Not that people shouldn’t be sad about those deaths.

Unless I’m wrong, has he said that those who get killed by guns don’t deserve empathy? What did he actually say to make people like you trot out this line?

Yeah, violence is never the answer to anything. The algorithm creates division and strident opinions. The whole demonising and talking about the other side in extreme language on both sides leads to these types of outcomes too.

A more civil discourse and respectful conduct should be expected. Unfortunately extreme language gets cut-through so probably won't stop.

It was all over social media. It was a person with a history of phycological issues and completely random. It was horrific but really hard to predict it happening and how do you stop it? They used to lock up people in institutions but some people would get stuck in the system and never let out after an episode. I doubt it goes back to that.

It was similar to the guy stabbed people in the Bondi Junction shopping centre attack. Totally horrific but hard to know who or how it could have been prevented.

Part of the problem is that with inequitable societies you get more desperate people. It costs something like $1 million a year to lock up a provisioner and probably at least that per head to build more prisons. Governments would be happy to lock them up but because corporation don't pay tax it has to come at the cost of services to the rest of us and from our purse.

It's easy to crack the shits and demand that they lock everyone away but someone has to pay for it.

With youth crime it's statistically worse for long term outcomes to lock them away. Most grow out of it but you only hear about the absolute worst of the worst. Maybe they need special provisions for the absolute worst of youth offenders.

I'm not that brutal about it but there is some truth to it. It was amplified by the media when it was one of so many crimes that didn't amplified.

It's exactly the same thing as the people killing Charlie Kirk who've been hearing extreme dehumanising language about the right. It's unhelpful and deliberately emotive for the sake of division. If both sides took a step back everyone would be better off.

While you're right jwikked, I find it tough to find sympathy for someone who said this after a school shooting in 2023. You reap what you sow. Especially when you use it to profiteer from peoples suffering and make money grifting.

He was a bit of a dickhead at times and said extreme stuff to get engagement. New media allows for really shit conduct with zero nuance or consequences. Instead of having rules it seems like this is turning into violent retribution which isn't good for anyone.

While you're right jwikked, I find it tough to find sympathy for someone who said this after a school shooting in 2023. You reap what you sow. Especially when you use it to profiteer from peoples suffering and make money grifting.

The problem with seeing it as playing with fire or karma is that it makes the world more divided and drops down another level of accepted conduct. There is nothing good about him being killed. Usually these things end up more polarising and the person gets deified.

I suggest that when you do look into everything he has said, it will become very apparent why he was a target.

His whole schtick was to inflame and create controversy so he could make a buck.

A dangerous approach in a country that still thinks they're living in the wild wild west.
