I think mindset plays a big part in writing. I grew up listening to metal from the early 80's all the way through to today. That means stuff like Iron Maiden and Metallica etc where effectively a lot of the time it's simply a historical story told to music, because they liked the story and thought the mood of the story would make a great metal song (probably helped that the lead singer of Maiden studied history at Uni). So, I'm very comfortable with the idea a song simply being a story set to music without any need for the story to be personal......

Years ago I was like that, but not anymore.

Pick a song.... one song... and sit there until you finish it. Then move onto the next one. It becomes much easier.

I saw an insta post on the guy who created Rick and Morty. He was saying most people struggle with the inner critic and he claims you need to write anything good or bad and then be disciplined enough to hone it into something good.

You can throw any pile of shit up and work it into something if you shut down the the voice in your head telling you that it's no good.

Creativity is like that though. You scrap 99% of ideas due to self censoring.

Even outside Metal there were a lot of great storytelling songs, or entire concept albums.
Eagles Desperado, Loosely based on the Doolin-Daltin gang told from various first person perspectives.
The Who's , Tommy and Quadrophenia.
Kansas - Spirit of Place.
Artists like Nick Cave, Springsteen, Paul Kelly , even Meatloaf ( Steinman ) love to tell a story.

Yep, agree. The biggest thing for me was to learn to get out of my own way. Things can flow then.

I think it depends how you write.

I do lyrics, then sit down to try and create riffs to fit the lyrics. Having said that, lyrics come easy to me. I used to write poetry, not because I had any great desire to be a poet, it just poured out of me of it's own accord, maybe as a coping mechanism or something. At some point I changed the structure of what I was writing to turn it into song lyrics. I still have occasions where I'll sit bolt upright in bed at 3am with an idea for a set of lyrics, hop out of bed, go and write them down, then go back to bed and come back to work on them the next day.........

Sometimes I start with lyrics, sometimes not. Sometimes I just sit with an acoustic and the whole thing happens. Often though, I'll lay some tracks down and then grab a mic and just sing incoherent stuff along, forming a melody. Then words begin to form and once I have a theme it's easy to go from there. The beauty of that way is the melody is just a very natural thing. I've since learnt a lot of people write that way. It's like riffing with your voice as an instrument and then fill in the words as they come. I've got heaps of saved stuff recorded where the music is pretty good and I'm singing absolute nonsense over the top . It helps capture a melody idea though, so it's cool to me.

NGL, best bday in HS event was at Witches in Britches as just a guest and the bday boy got put in front of the dining as we giggled.

So thought "surely, someone decided that was a grand name", just never did I think it was going to be local.

Now that you can finish them, did you notice a change in mindset? Identity of the writing voice in the song? Mine come off as too clever sometimes and over written. I from that era where irony was OK. Not anymore, someone’s point about it has to be YOU ! Is spot on. These days the artist = voice in the song = 100% authentic confessional direct transmission …no ‘narrator’ , no tricks, no winks….Performance of authenticity is paramount. (Even though a team of calculating producers often write the pop hits today - Max Martin etc) Sometimes I can thread the needle, mostly I have a few bars of goodness and the rest is pulp.

As I said before, I think it's about getting out of your own way and not overthinking everything.

So I have a letter on me, it states my water would be turned off on the 8th of May at 11pm until 5am 9th of May.
Today, I showered, used the amenities, went to work.
As I broke for lunch and as I was soaking some pots from last night, I emptied that and went to rinse only....
No water.

So quick check of things, nada. Not as quick call to GWW "Deer Park area between..." "Sunbury area between.." and not 5 mins after I hang up does a motor start.

I now have a sink that has residue of an arrabiata sauce just chilling there, stewing, and I'm down 1 bottled water to rinse my hand from sticking into that muck to move the pots to a cleaner sink to rinse them. 3hrs more of no water unless they break something other than my patience.
