I’ve been banned from buying any more. 5 out around the house. Two up in the country, 2 in the roof and a few hidden at work. I feel like some kind of pervert hiding my shame. I’ve actually sold a few and might try to trade up a couple now. It’s got a bit ridiculous.

I decided to do a little bit of a clean out.

A what would be maybe late 80's early 90's Akai hi-fi unit CD-M88 on a AC-M53 tower instance, in any event, spent a good 30min trying to find a tear down to see if I could fix the CD drive failing as it was reading fine just could be a belt, could be a misalignment thing, could be dust, could be a spider for all I knew for why it was spin reading but not back forth ejecting.

Nothing coming, so lets eyeball it instead and as you do when you eyeball things, you try and keep everything you remove in one neat pile to say "this came from there, that goes here" for when you reassemble. It was here that I met snags.

  1. Saw a random disc wedged on the inside, so obviously last use decades ago meant something slipped originally. I blame a sister as it was a Human Nature CD with no cover anywhere to speak of. Last seen by me in a now wood shipped entertainment unit side compartment in said 90's.
  2. I had all screws on first attempt to reassemble, however could not align the cover back on at the drive door instance as it was a slide in lift up and push down centre instance and I've only two hands to push 2 directions and align and screw whilst trying to chest things in random directions for screwing alignments.
  3. Upon what was the third attempt at this as RA blows, I managed to lose two screws. First one was located at my feet as a "I guess when I was moving things around it knocked it" situation.
  4. I had to grab a torch to find the other one as it had somehow cleared the entire room I was working in. And had landed on the phillips head pointing downwards, so no bounce occurred as screw metal - floor wood.
  5. To get there the screw would have had to go from a pile on the table I was working on, clear 3 chairs, clear myself, clear the unit I was working with and clear a door to another area to do the above.
  6. Drive is still buggered as I don't feel much like spamming the open button and forcing the tray open with a butter knife when the unit is powered just to change a disc over feature that has now been enabled.
  7. I now need to find boxes to stick it in so I can retire it to my eventual new shed later since still functional just kinda broken and since my nonnas funeral is on cassette tape which does still work along with radio so I can at least make copies and do things with it elsewhere and get a better vinyl player.
Should probably invest in a parts organiser tray if I find more things to tinker with....

I'm around 25 including basses.. plus 3 ukes on top of that.

I've got a Didge I've had for over 20 years
Still haven't worked out the circular breathing bit
Although, can make decent enough sounds & it clears out the lungs.

But more likely to hit an intruder over the head with it
than become proficient.

Now im in Cairns, l'll probably end up giving it to an aboriginal on the street.

Think I need to be single.

There was an exotic Danelectro on marketplace with an amp. I started to think about it.

The green one?

To be honest mate I never hid a guitar or lied about it when I was married.

I do think it would be cool to have just one electric, one acoustic and a bass though. If I went that way it would probably be a tele with a bigsby.

I worked in the Hi Fi industry, can recommend a repairer depending on location

i'm single, and gotten so lazy i haven't even got 6 strings on any of my guitars.

Appreciate it but not worth it really. Unit was disco 1991 and I vaguely remember having it maybe in '88-9, so given I believe it to be the controller/mobo that has the glitch as the power went to and the rail does run true just needs to be forced, prolly an electric thing. Given then exit of things in 91-2 period for the manufacturer and there being almost 40 years between when it was sold, a repair would be third party take too long and there are just better options around so it's shifted to "project" category at present.

Feels like like I took mushrooms and decided to rebuild a car engine.

You've never taken electronics apart before?

6 screws at the back, as I didn't measure them I assume M2 x 25 as they were tiny.
6 screws (3x either side) that were slightly thicker, so assume M4 x25
PH2 head, domed/flanged.

As no organiser or try to use, had some paper towel (always need paper towel somewhere) and as black screw, hey presto; parts organiser on a dark stained wooden table that is grounded.

Then as generator (for power) table (for workspace) and 4x chairs for "I need to approach things from this angle" and as a room with a genny and electrical things, multiple exits for emergency things, then as an arthritic bloke...

I like to think I make repair interesting. As the random twitches, the random stop works the randomness might end up with things like that sngle screw not being at my foot, but behind me near the end of the room I was in was maybe the last option where it could be. As the paper towel was in front of where I was working to my left, as there is a wall there and a door to my right when in that room so any lost screw should be contained within a small circle around me instead fo out of the room entirely.

Genny was on my left behind me, I was in front of 1 chair working, CD unit was in front of me going left-right (power-> no power) "tray" was infront of cd unit, and tower unit was under chair to my left obviously, so that if anyhthing went wrong I would piss off right and extinguish whatever I need to in said room or run straight to first aid instance if required.

Speaking of a car engine though...

Used to help my uncle in tuning his motorbike until I got permission to work on the quad bike when I was 7. Farming really is great for hands on experience in breaking things down and rebuilding them.

Anyway, I did have a stop work instance as RA event, so I assume it was then that things moved and I just didn't take stock count upon resumption of work. Just you know me, everything needs a good story, it's a bit dry otherwise.

In fact if you go to the Saints Disco thread and check out the Alison Krauss/Robert Plant song I posted the other day (Can't Let Go), you'll see JD McPherson playing his TK Smith custom guitar, a variation on the Gretsch Billy-Bo. Twang heaven!

Edit: just watched it again and one of the other guys is playing a Danelectro

I've actually been a J.D McPherson fan for years so I'm aware of that guitar. I go on rockabilly kicks from time to time... JD is one of the best of the modern people that tackle the genre. I wasn't surprised that Robert was aware of him and has him on board, being such a big rockabilly fan himself. Only bummer was JD's old band seemed to break up because of it. I liked the rhythm section he had.

In what is probably enough of the Nerdfest for one day, here's the guitar it's originally based on. Designed by Bo Diddley, he had some guy at Gretsch in New York in the late fifties put a few of his designs together (including the famous rectangular box) from Gretsch necks and parts. This is his rhythm guitarist from the early sixties, "The Duchess", aka Norma Jean Wofford. Love this photo!

Unfortunately not. Got caught up looking at a few of his guitars yesterday, a lot of them based on Paul Bigsby's original designs. Everything handmade by him, including pickups and Bigsby's.

Way outta my price range and a three year wait! Pickups are meant to be fantastic (you can buy 'em separately) and a very cool vintage vibe 😍

Duesenburg do exotic retro guitars that aren't as custom but more available and cheaper but still ridiculously pricey.
