Firstly, when did this turn into the "what music are you listening to thread"? :):thumbsu:

Secondly, my first "big" gig was probably Pearl Jam.

Thirdly, I don't see what the difference in liking shit pop music is in comparison to liking shit tv shows like Big Brother. They are both mass produced, over hyped, over advertised mediocrity. Don't get me wrong I can see the appeal. It's lighthearted fun really. I'm not going to bag anyone for liking it (well outside a few good humoured barbs) but it doesn't mean I am going to dig it.

DThomas surely if you can defend Big Brother you can appreciate TheFreshBanana liking Katy Perry? Even if you don't appreciate it yourself.
Not even in the same ballpark!

I don't have to defend myself. Shit pop music is forgettable and disposable while the classics live on. The large majority of people will agree with me. I know it comes down to opinion, but how can you trust the opinions of people that haven't even given the classics a chance? I've given pop music a chance. It's shit. TheFreshBanana hasn't heard the classics, therefore he has a skewed view of music.

Snob life!:D:thumbsu:

If we're going to get in a debate about opinion, some terrible people still hold racist and sexist views against people. Since it's their opinion, does that mean we can't condemn that opinion as terribly small-minded, uninformed and just a generally "bad" opinion? Of course we can!

At least if somebody listened to the classics and gave them a chance and then decided that it wasn't for them, then I can respect that.

Anyway, I'm not here to get into a silly intellectual debate.

Because racist and sexist views involves the idea of people.

This is about music. They are not one and the same.

Personally, I don't care if someone is racist or sexist. I don't associate myself with them and everything is gravy as long as they keep it to themselves and treat people with respect.

I like coriander. It's one of my favourite herbs. I know plenty of people that just can't handle it. Refuse to eat it. Are they wrong to have that opinion? It is a matter of taste. It is subjective. Just like music. Plenty of people dig The Seekers. To me they are train wreck.

I totally disagree on your girl analogy. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There will be some similarities but I've known opinions of these things to vary by a point of 4 out of 10 plenty of times.
Taste is a bad example to compare it to. Because one may like something, and the other may not, but it is highly possible they are tasting 2 different things.

Still working on the music one.

I wasn't saying they were same thing.:p You get my point though, right? Basically, someone that hasn't opened themselves up to different types of music from different eras has a distorted view of music and their opinions are based on a small set of music that they happen to listen to. Their definition of "good" is skewed because they haven't had the other music to compare it to.

Struggling to 'like' that one, 76er
My excuse is that I was seven years old at the time.

My parents took me.

My favorite band at the time was Sherbet, I wasn't an ABBA fan at all. But my parents loved ABBA and hated Sherbet so I ended up with a ticket to see ABBA at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl for my seventh birthday :( (with my parents of course  )

I kept that a secret for many years - I guess it's not so uncool these days :p I did end up with my ticket signed by Benny, Björn, Agnetta and Frida, so maybe that's worth something?

Anyway, these days ABBA bring back very happy kitch memories, so I have been known to hum along to it :)

I've just seen The Butler
I probably should be writing this in The Movie Thread (sorry Quicky) but given Mandela's passing yesterday it had even more relevance as a reminder of the very bitter and recent history of fighting for human rights in America.
It's a powerful and disturbing movie, based on a true story of Cecil Gaines, who served as butler to 7 presidents, from Eisenhower to Reagan.
I'm ashamed to say I'd forgotten how ugly so much of it was

Having been to South Africa recently it's amazing how much the place has grown in the past few decades

Still has lots of problems, but it is 100 times better than it was not so long ago

Mate Warnie arsehole though he is,is a very astute judge and I would not be surprised at his prediction of 5 zip.I think the series is gone already and unless there is major turnaround or rain 5-0 is on the cards, the batting is fragile to say the least shithouse in fact.
