Ah the Kitchener bun...!

Used to race for home down Magill Road on my bike from Norwood High (1960-63) on Friday afternoons...
Mum would have four in the cake-bin; I'd have two straight away... two
A former Norwood student too, however I do not know what a Kitchener bun is and I have Morialta blood in me.

Native to SA. Based on a German recipe, renamed Kitchener in 1914 for patriotic excuses.

Compared to the 1960s beauties, the new-age one photographed looks like it went down with Kitchener in 1916 and was found washed up on a shore somewhere.

Oh no...now I am going to have to stare at that picture for weeks...although I seem to recall the dob of jam inside the bun under the cream, like a surprise

Surprise, yes, grosh147 old mate. The jam used to be inside the bun and so did the cream, and there was a helluva lot more of both. Big fat dollops of it. The bun was plump and soft and you buried your face into it... and the sugar on top went up your nose and the cream and jam flopped out all over your chin and cheeks and you had to lick it off with your tongue and then you drew back and looked at the bun with the bite out of it and it looked back at you and smiled... "Eat me please" it said, "Eat me slowly and I'll make your next wish come true"... And so you ate it, very slowly, and what the bun had said was true, your next wish was granted, immediately... You picked up another one.... and....

grosh...? hey, grosh...? oh kryst does anyone know CPR ?!

Don't worry I've got me heart pills with me, and you are a bastard Lockhart, the only pleasure I have is realising you went overseas to work in the early 70's...while you were over there I wonder how many of those gave me sugar nose while you were eating dumpling and noodles?

There are still places that have buns as big as your arm, filled with jam and cream. That one looks like something you'd get from Balfours or Vili's.
