We've had Fox Footy's The Recruit, a reality show intended to unearth hidden gems and give them a shot at playing in the AFL.
Given the standard of AFL commentary (diabolical), why wouldn't Fox Footy, or perhaps a commercial network, consider running a similar programme to find the next best AFL commentator? Is there a Clinton Grybas [RIP] out there somewhere? The next Gerard Whately?
The show could run for ~12 weeks, or a shorter timeframe and involve the contestants guest calling games, doing footy trivia, hosting footy news on FoxFooty etc. The winner could get a guaranteed contract and the other contestants might still get a look in.
For not much expense, we might potentially add much needed quality to the commentary ranks. Thoughts?
The only flaw in your suggestion is that the media doesn't actually know how diabolical the standard of AFL commentary is.
