Thats why I asked if there are flagologist who know - not guess. Flags have been around for several thousand years. Pirates for maybe 500. There must be some older reason why.

ISIL flag is black. You would think the African nations that got independance post WWII woild have used some black but their must be some convention.
Oh...I misread. I thought you were looking for a 'flogologist'. I shall go then

The only appropriate flag Australia could adopt when we become a republic would be the Boxing Kangaroo, the Eureka Flag or one of these.

yeah

Green/Gold Southern Cross. Kinda Aussie.

The southern cross above the red land surrounded by white beaches and blue ocean.

NZ PM John Key has called for a change in the Kiwi flag. Wants a silver fern on it. Says he might call a referendum in 2015. Might be a bit of kite flying on his part but have said for a long time I reckon the Kiwis will beat us to a republic and flag change and we will sheepishly follow. Pun intended.

Any flagologists out there who can explain why countries dont have all or majority black flags? You would think a black flag with a silver fern would win any vote.

Ths Canadians got it right in the lead up to their centenary of independence in 1967. Have the debate start in 1963, move it to parliament in 1964 after a debate set up a committee, ask for deaigns from the public, several months later vote on it and when the committe votes 15-0 for one design in late 1964, it is adopted and officially changed by the queen in February 1965. No Canadian since has said lets change the flag it doesnt represent Canada.
The funny thing is, the Kiwi's are far more Anglophiled than Australia is. They didn't have the post war Continental European migration that Australia had and therefore are very much more British in their heritage and in many ways outlook. Hell, due to the rainfall, scenically, NZ even looks like the UK.

NZ are exponentially more in tune with their indigenous roots and autonomy, however, compared to Australia. So they have that going for them.

Because a black flag is the international symbol to parley ie discuss treaties etc, especially regarding maritime dealings.

That's why pirates used it - it was a subterfuge to get closer to their enemies before they realized they weren't there to talk...

The national flags that exist today would actually be fairly recent designs (historically speaking), in line with the emergence of the associated Nation-States. Before then provincal/regional flags would've been used.

Most current national flag designs are probably only 200-400 years old.

Out of interest, Australia's flag is only 61 years old officially.

Most are even younger, only the likes of the Union Jack come anywhere near the 400 year mark (the current one has only been used since 1801). Nation states have only really existed for about 300 years. The oldest is Denmark's (which cheats as simply being a cross) which is about 500 years old. But Denmark has always had a weird existence as a nation/province.

We are called vexillologist's :).
Black flags are uncommon in Western countries because the red white and blue is often the symbol of the blood, race and sky/sea. There are plenty of black images and black on some older flags but a majority doesn't make sense (Germany's modern and pre war flags for example).

To use black as a battle standard, the role for which flags are intended, also defeats the purpose as they would be difficult to see in bad light, particularly if being used as a jack. Black flags are also used as the opposite to white flags, a signal that there will be no surrender nor quarter given (Genghis Khan established this usage).

.......joking

I've always liked the basis of our coat of arms replacing the Union Jack with some modifications eg. have the Union Jack and Aboriginal flag on the shield to represent our history and the indigenous , plus I like how the Kangaroo and Emu are native to Australia and symbolic because neither animal can move backward, only forward symbolising progress of us as a nation who wont take a backwards step ...though electing Abbott as PM:eek::rolleyes:;)

NZ like Australia have about 1/4 of their population born O's. After WWII they had a big immigration intake, they took Greeks, Italian, Yugoslavs but in not as bigger numbers as Oz and went for northern Europeans. There was some immigration deal with the Netherlands government - I think it tied in with all those Dutch who were involved with Indonesia and the Pacific but also immigrates from the Netherlands. They also went for more Austrians, Danes, Swiz, Germans, Polish etc than Oz did. So their immigrants physically blended in more with the British base of their population. Plus Maori's made up 10-15% of their population post war whereas Oz Aboriginies have been in the 2-4% in post WWII years and weren't officially counted in the census before 1967.

The two big difference with NZ and Oz immigration, they have a lot bigger % of Scots in their British Isles intake, and as the Maori influence and reintergration into the main stream culture in the late 1960's and 1970's happened they started having a preference towards Pacific Island countries migration - Samoa, Tongo, Fiji, Solomon Islands, etc into their intake.
